i think its pretty clear... he has the speed, power, precision, and hes only 17 fights in.... he looks like hes just on another level when he fights.... This roger mtagwa guy gives juanma all he can handle, but get destroyed in two rounds in his next fight against gamboa.. it was like Mtagwa v. juanma was a b+ vs. B+, and gamboa vs. mtagwa looked like an A+ vs a sparring partner....
I know, I've just learned not to pay any attention to any triangle theory nonsense. IMO, the Mtagwa fight was a combination of not taking him seriously, being slightly weight drained, and having a terrible game plan.
And I'll have to watch it again, but it seemed that Gamboa's stoppage was a bit premature. Yuri had him hurt earlier, but the final knockdown seemed a bit suspect, like he just caught him off balance.
Either way, I just need to see Gamboa in there with some world class comp before I'm totally convinced.
I definately agree with this. I am a long way from being convinced with Gamboa as of yet. Right now, JuanMa has a higher standing with me.
no, i have not them all, but ive seen alot... but point taken, ill revise
gamboa is the best fighter that ive seen below 140.
i second that, especially in the skill category, marquez before moving up to 144 i think would beat him based on his countering, chin, and they way he can break down an offensive fighter like gamboa. the same way he did against pac. and i think rafael marquez and vazquez could have had a shot before there trilogy. skill wise he is the best i have seen but i have not seen his chin against a warrior like vazquez and marquez. you need more than skill to beat those 2, cause they will exchange with you for 12 rounds straight and they can take a punch with the best of them. his speed and movement against mtagwa were very impressive though, and his style is great to watch.
I agree that JuanMa should be getting more credit than he seems to be for what is a very good win, but I think the main issue people are picking up on is that Gamboa anhilated a guy that JuanMa went life and death with. That is understandable IMO.

prime Calderon makes him look like a fool, right now a aging Calde UDs him close P4P wise
Calderon right now, beats him, P4P obviously, Prime Calderon wins like 10-2 in rounds.
Ok. I will respectfully disagree.
Funny how Lopez stops a world champ to win a title in his second weight class. On the same night Gamboa looks very good knocking out a respectable journeyman, on his way to his first title shot. And Gamboa is getting all the press.

I know you gotta make the money while the gettins good. But potentially if they cleared out the division. And then fought it'd be huge. I know it's not definite they can win every fight but it'd be worht the wait.
+ 1. Well said.

get off his nuts, yes he is good but, he just beat Rogers Mtagwa......
I think for skill-4-skill there is at the moment, none like him. What I like about him is that he's a closer. Great fighters know how to finish and he has that killer instinct. I'd like to see him pushed a bit more the next round.
I think the Juanma v Mtagwa fight was a mere abberation, a club fighter just swinging for the fences. I do think however that if Juanma and Gamboa do fight, that Gamboa will finish Juanma off. I noticed in the Luevano fight that Juanma just takes too many hits AND he swells up like no other. I didn't see much pop from Luevano's punches, yet in the post fight, Juanma looked like he went 12 rounds. That worries me
Good post. Can't really argue except to say that Luevano didn't look like any sort of termater can to me. Especially early on. He's lanky. He had pretty good defense and a good, quick jab that he brought back up to his face quick. Maybe Gamboa blows out Luevano early, maybe not, but I get the feeling that it would behoove an upper tier fighter to start cautious and take Yuri deep and see what happens.
I also noticed (along w/the 2 other guys I was watchin' the fight with) that Juanma did seem to swell from not too much punishment. It is worrisome if you're (like me) lookin' for some newer guys early in their career to root for...

Is anybody else with me on seeing Gamboa and Lopez clean up the division and then maybe in another year or next summer 2011 have a mega fight? I wanna see it. But not right now.
Wait a minute, aren't we jumping on the bandwagon a little early? Maybe Gamboa is the hottest prospect, that I will agree!
But his best opponent to date was Rogers Mtagwa? And Mtagwa is a known slow starter! If you remember the first few rounds against JuanMa he was getting a beating too.
Mtagwa is a super bantamweight that came in with 12 losses! Perhaps we should give Gamboa some time before we start posts with "the best ever" stuff!

Thats a bold statement, Ivan Calderon alone makes him look like a clown.
I love Ivan as much as anyone, but talking about the here and now...Ivan can't touch Gamboa. I hope Calderon fights one more time and retires...he looks like his legs are going to give out on him

I don't agree with the TS but I think that "makes him look like a clown" might be taking it one step too far.

Gamboa just cleaned the clock of a slow, tough guy that got lucky in his previous bout (think Bute/Andrade). Not a skilled boxer. He's got potential, no doubt, but let's see him fight a Rafa Marquez, Rocky Juarez, Chris John, or even Luevano @ 126. We won't even get started talking about guys like Ali Funeka and his weight class. For now. There's plenty of skilled competition around and a little bit north of his current weight class. Plenty of guys with much more technical ability and athleticism to stretch his chops on before we fire up the gigantor-fukking-hype train. Ya know?
He's good and explossive but what will he do with the likes of Celestino,Vasquez,Marquez bros, slickness of Casamayor, pressure 12rnd fighters like Diaz and Katsidis.these are the kind of fighters that Gamboa needs in his resume.Mtagwa just got lucky with the Lopez fight and it happens to alot of good fighters.Remember Sam Soliman how he almost beat Winky with his wild style and a greater boxer like Tito couldn't touch him!Well what I'm saying don't judge Lopez for his peformance against Mtagwa because Gamboa is more technically sound than Mtagwa. And Lopez might loose but he will give Gamboa the fight of his life!!!!

IMO it's a bit early to say that, but he's a great talent and prospect/contender and you're entitled to your opinion.
I enjoy watching Hozumi Hasegawa, Roman Gonzalez, Ivan Calderon, Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym, and Asnelmo Moreno.
He looked great last night, but it's still to early to know.
I'd like to see him in with John, Lopez and Caballero. If he defeats those three, then he is surely the best fighter under 140.
hell yea i agree.... im just stating it now so that if/when it happens, i can say i said it first lol.... but i think he ko's all three tho
