While a lot of you expected Taylor to withdraw from the Super Six after his devastating KO loss to Abraham, I did not. Taylor took me by surprise with this announcement that he is withdrawing.
Here's my thinking.
I'm Jermain Taylor, coming off 2 devastating KOs in the last few years, and I'm offered the oppurtunity to take part in Showtime's Super Six tournament. Going into this, wouldn't I at least acknowledge the notion that I could be KTFO again? And if I did, would I still join the tournament?
Taylor had to know facing Abraham, Ward, and Kessler, he had a good chance to get KTFO, so this brings up my main question.
If Taylor knew he had a chance to get KTFO, why did he join the tourney to begin with?
After he was KOed by Abraham, most saw him withdrawing, but I didn't, because it just didn't make any logical sense to me that a guy who's been KOed brutally before wouldn't acknowledge the chances of it happening again, and sign up to participate in a tourney where his chances of getting KOed again were high.
So why did Taylor sign up for this if he was going to withdraw after a KO loss, knowing that the chances of that happening were there?
I like Taylor, and appreciate the class he's shown throughout the years, but something upstairs just isn't right. I've said before I think he's a borderline "dumb" fighter, and it seems his career choices are bordering on "dumb" as well. Again, I have nothing but respect, but his logic makes no sense.
What i don't understand is that if he stayed in the Super Six at least he would have some good paydays to retire on afterwards.
what good is $4 million to you if you end up brain dead or in a wheel chair?
at least enjoy the money he has whilst he still has his faculities about him and enjoy life with his family.
Nah, it must have been a tough decision, but he made a good choice. He needs time to think about shit and recover. Boxing in the Super Six is good and all, but he needs to consider his health also.
I think he signed up to give it a shot. Kind of a last hurrah before retirement, possibly retire on top.
Unfortunately he found out early that he is just not able to box on the top level anymore due to safety concerns.
I personally understand his reasoning for both entering and exiting the tournament and I wish him all the best.
Taylor should've never joined, that's my opinion when it all boils down.
He shouldn't have been so over confident and dismissive to the reality of what this tournament actually involved.
I mean, before the Abraham fight he said, "This will be an easy fight for me"
Oh really Jermain? We've seen you KOed twice by white big punching slow starters in the past few years, so what makes you think Arthur will be different?
I like Jermain and respect what he's done in the sport, but he isn't all there IMO.
I think you're over-analyzing this situation. I believe he went into the tourney believing that he could win and when he suffered that devistating KO coupled with Ward's destruction of Kessler he changed his mind..
No doubt. He went into the tournament thinking he could win it all and redeem himself. I get that. And I understand why he dropped out. He just seems to not think things through entirely, and not acknowledging the possibility of being KOed by Abraham was a giant misstep.
I mean, if I've been brutally KOed twice in the past few years, how could I not acknowledge the possibility of it happening again?
Understand all that, and I agree with his decision, I never said I didn't. What I'm saying is that his logic makes no sense. If I'm one bad KO from needing a break from the sport, why would I sign up for a tournament that makes me fight at least 3 times against top comp?
I don't want to come off as insenstive here. Taylor is doing right by himself and his family, I just don't understand why he signed up in the first place if he knew this was a possibility. Now poor Showtime is stuck trying to fill the spot and possibly alter their scoring. Bad move by Taylor if he hopes to return on Showtime, I'm sure they're not happy with the situation.
Taylor has set a trend I'm afraid. Starts well in most fights, then gasses out in the championship rounds and has lost 3 of his 5 fights by brutal KO's.

personally think he is quite right.
his KO losses have been particularly brutal, no point in taking another concussion and effect your long term health.
He has been beat up bad of late. Pavlik knocked him out,and their next fight he was beaten up quite a bit. Then Froch and Abraham knock him out. I don't think he needs another beating from Ward. Not the way Ward looked against Kessler.
Maybe he doesn't want to be permanently brain damaged?
dude it's about his health now... I bet his entire family's been egging him to retire..
