Boxers fought way too many times back in the days, no one should enter a ring still bruised and cut up from a previous fight. Full respect to them though thats why there are so many champions from way back.
What do you guys think would be a good amount of fights per year for the average boxer?
It's mainly about money.
Heavyweight champions back then were well paid. Look at how inactive most of the HW champions were pre-Louis. They often took part in well-paid exhibitions instead, rather than defending their titles.
fighting that frequently cannot be that healthy lol. that and 14 rounds. true warriors though.
You mean 15 rounds... And, if we go really way back some fought 20 rounds or more... That was crazy...
guys used to fight every week in the past. now the top guys only fight once or twice a year.
This thread is an important reminder to remind us of the differences between fighters from yesterday and those who fight today. Money and hunger are factors in the differences in the frequency of fighting for most fighters. Some fighters fight more or less than others used to for other reasons. All we can know for sure is that, on average, fighters fight less than they used to in this day and age, and that's the truth.
Excellent observations. Fighters today do fight a lot less than those who fought a lot more in years past.
It would be good for fighters today to be more like those of past generations and fight more, though because of today's generation and sports climate, they don't.
Some fighters today fight more than others, but still not the same amount as they used to. Those who do fight more are closer to those that used to fight a lot in past years because of the amount of times they fight each year, which is often still quite a lot less.
It is interesting to note that some champions today only fight once or twice a year. Others fight three or, if they fight more than usual, four times a year. Past champions fought much more than one, two, three or four times a year. I think this is important to note.
This is funny i was just saying the same thing to a friend i we just watched mike fight 11 fights in 1985 with all 11 KO's witch is crazy you would never see anything even close to that now a days!!!
It's a shame, boxing politics sucks, all the dirty sanctioning bodies should turn down boxers from their ranks for inactivity, take Mosley, Hopkins and Pavlik for examples, at the top of their divisions fighting once in light-years. Most boxers don't care about their legacy anymore it's just the money.

How did fighters recover from brutal fights back in the early days?
ice baths is one way yes but the other simple answer is they didn't recover.
often fighters would be nursing injuries as they went into their next fight. having a body that would quickly recover was something that was much more valued and much more important back then.
Fights didn't rake in millions of dollars back in the days a lot has to do with promoting the fights and all the other crap
Fighters don't need to have heaps of fights
