for their 'Championship Boxing' series:

- March 6th- Arthur Abraham-Andre Dirrell, told that Agua Calientes is finalized as the venue
- April 17th- Jermain Taylor- Andre Ward/Carl Froch-Mikkel Kessler
- May 22nd- Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez IV
Now, this doesn't include Tim Bradley next fight. Also, Showtime is interested in Darchinyan-Donaire II
This doesn't include Shobox of course, Showtime is stepping up their game. Major props.
PPV is part of the sport my friends. It is where every fighter wants to be featured now. Look at the TOP RANK PPV's put out this year. Compare them to what HBO has given us. Also include that with most of the BIG PPV fights they have brought to us this year the have included a 24/7 which is free with the membership. You also don't have to be a HBO subscriber to buy a PPV presented by HBO. The fact thay present a PPV event means they sponser the event by putting up funds for the fight. The fact they show the PPV fight the week after the event an have that fight be the undercard of a fight broadcast on their network is also good. To be able to see the fight again or for the first time for a price included in you membership.
I think Showtime needs to keep things the way they are what needs to happen is for Showtime and HBO to be able to get together on some of the PPV events or BIG FIGHTS. Much like they did back when Lewis fought Tyson. You have a fight out there that can be made but won't because of contractual obligations to certain networks. Lets face it the networks control the sport. Much like in the UFC where they control who fights who. If the network ain't buying it or one fighter is obligated to the other netwrok we as fans aren't getting the fight.....Lefty
never said i had a problem or anything with PPV. i said sort of cause he said you have to pay for HBO fights most of the time. which you really dont if you decide to wait.
Showtime had one of its best years 2009 , looks like 2010 will be more of the same.
I know it has been said but i think they get it, people want a good product not just a product. The whole MMA vs Boxing debate has been done to death but it has been fantastic for boxing. This truth is evidenced by this last quarter and the match-ups put together, more than half by Showtime by the way. Showtime was willing to think outside the box with the Super Six and it appears they have not gotten to heavily invested in any one promoter.
This flexibility and multipartner strategy bodes well for their further market proliferation and for Us the fans.
For me, HBO = McDonald's, Showtime = Burger King.
When I was a kid, I loved the hell out of some McDonald's. As I got older, I started going to Burger King way more. (Added bonus, they endorsed the Star Wars franchise with some cool-ass giveaways.)
Sometimes it's OK to be #2. It gives you something to strive for, room for improvement.
Props to Showtime.
I like your analogy sir personally I love Wendy's for the baked potatoes they give you with your combo meals. That being said I only go to Wendy's when I am in the mood for some baked potatoes or they have a cool option on their dollar menu. Other wise I stick to what is the norm and that is McDonalds and their Big Mac anf the happy meals and coffee they make so good. HBo will be back in the groove and if Showtime keeps up their line up we as fight fans will reap the benefits....Lefty

Showtime is a better deal for boxing than HBO.
Think about it. HBO gets all this credit for putting on mega fights, but it's not like those fights are included with the HBO membership.
All Showtime fights are free with the membership. Whereas most of the best HBO fights, you have to pay for.
I have really been impressed with Showtime's overall upgrade in production, graphics and talent since the inception of the Super Six. They really appear to be making a move. Showtime now needs to enter into the PPV market which they have let HBO dominate.
sort of is since they replay the PPV fights a week later. some wait and avoid results til then. or at least try.

Jermain Taylor should not be on that list, the guy should retire.

The only and most recent article I see is the one you speak of HBO and Boxing - At a Crossroads I do not see where HBo confirms or denys this. It seems they have made some porr decisions in 2008 and 2009. They went into bed with GBp as I stated and some dates were cancelled or postponed. This might have caused them to lose $$$ on some deals and give up some other fights they may have been able to bid on by reserving those dates for GBP and their fighters. Boxing needs to make more competitive fghts and get a more active schedule overall. The fact they are now showing fights on other networks including verses and ESPN more often helps the overall cause....Lefty
Overall I think HBO did a good job this year with the fewer PPV's and putting pressure on promoters to make better fights. I also liked the fact they are trying to educate the fans a little more with those little intro's before the fight as to who the champs in the divisions are. They just need to make a "we buy fights attitude" If you're not willing to put up your fighters against the other top guys go somewhere else.
Is it confirmed HBO is cutting their budget? I thought it was only Thomas Hauser's HBO hating ass saying that?

with HBO cutting their boxing budget, this is a great opportunity for SHO to stepup
i just might have to cancel HBO and reorder SHO

The Super Six will bring us 3 of those fights alone. The tournament has brought them major interest. They chose to invest in a division while it was hot and get the fighters and promoters to sit down and make it happen. Major props for that!!
The fact they have Tim Bradley signed to a deal helps them out. he is undoubtedly the best at 140lbs right now. It would be nice to see him more active and land another good fight. If they could schedule it for the first quarter of 2010 maybe sometime in late March early April that would be great.
Valero is exciting has made a name for himself and is being talked about everywhere including these boards.
Marquez vs Vasquez might have had more interest a little bit sooner but I am sure they will replay the previous fights and gain some interest in the fight as the date draws closer.
In light of everything you have to attribute Showtime stepping up running parallel with HBO falling off. The fact that HBO had a major drought last year due to scheduling dates with GBP and having issues with most of them. Losses to Ortiz, El Perro and set back with Kirkland and Pavlik. All these things have factored into Showtime being able to do what it is they accomplished thus far.....Lefty
