Hi everyone, this is my first thread on Boxingscene.
Question about the upcoming Pac-Mayweather fight: should it be for the Ring Magazine lineal welterweight belt?
Aside from the championships in 7 weight divisions, Manny is the first fighter in history to have 4 lineal titles (flyweight, featherweight, junior lightweight, super lightweight). right now the bible of boxing, the Ring Magazine, has the welterweight division title vacant, but Manny is ranked the #1, Shane Mosley is #2 and Floyd Mayweather is #3.
in most cases, the Ring Magazine only gives vacant spots to the winner of a battle between the #1 and the #2 (like when Manny beat Marquez for the 130lb lineal title), with a couple of exceptions allowing the #1 vs #3 when the #1 and #2 will never fight each other (like heavyweights Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko... Wlad beat the #3 Ruslan Chagaev to win the lineal heavyweight belt this year).
So should Pac vs Mayweather be for the lineal title, although it's between the #1 and the #3? Mayweather used to own the lineal belt before his retirement. Maybe the Ring Magazine could make an exception?
Just a thought, if Shane mosley loses to Andre Berto in January, chances are Berto won't take the #2 spot because I don't think his resume is as good as mayweather's overall even with a mosley win. Mayweather would probably move up to #2 and Berto would shift to #3. That would make Pacquiao-Mayweather an automatic fight for the lineal title.
Imagine if Pac-Mayweather is for the WBO, Ring Magazine welterweight and Ring Magazine P4P titles... it would be historically MASSIVE.
Thoughts?
Yep.
Pac is #1 and Mr boat buyer is #3.
Unless rankings change due to SSM-Berto it's for the lineal title.
Pac is # what?!?......did he fight and beat Shane?!?......did Floyd or Cotto beat Margarito?!?......who did Pac fight at 147?!?.......I'm confused by the serious media ass kissing thats going on!!!.....SHANE MOSLEY IS THE TOP WW IN THE DAM DIVISION.....BERTO WILL GET KTFO AND IF MANNY AND FLOYD WANT THE SAME ......THEY'LL GET IT!!!.....whoever made those rankings is stupid......you and I BOTH know Manny shouldn't be the #1 ranked WW......come on man.......he beat Cotto at catchweight.......the same Cotto who lost to Marg.....the same Marg that Shane wiped the Staples Center with........Floyd hasn't fought a WW since he fought that bum from Argentina.......come on man!!.......thats my rant for the day :lol1:.....Bless!
that's probably true, pac got it because of mosley's inactivity. a good win by mosley against berto, which i'm expecting, will put him back on top of the rankings of the welterweight division because of his accomplishments there overall.
Pac's still P4P though, til march when it might change
NO. Until someone beats mosley it's still up for grabs. Mosley beat margarito who beat cotto. Mayweather retired so he gave up the title in 2007. IT is now 2009-2010. Mosley is the champ. Boxing has been that way for years. You have to beat the champ. You can't retire and then come back and be champ again. You have to win it back. In the words of janet jackson(what have you done for me lately). Pac beat cotto not mosley.
Not everybody who writes for the Ring is a douche. But their rankings are messed up big time right now from division to division. It's just so flawed that I'm not gonna get into it. And I don't think it even has anything to do with Oscar like I did at first because Mosley lost his #1 ranking and he's with Golden Boy. Somebody compiling the rankings for that publication have just got their head up their ass.
I thought it was like a panel who comes up with the rankings? And, they vote on it or something like that. Personally you can criticize any rankings. But, I agree if Shane beats Berto than Shane should be #1 and I think The Ring would put him #1. I think they gave Pac the #1 spot due to Shane inactivity.
And, who exactly would be corrupting the ring?

It would be a hard sell for Pacquiao-Floyd being for the lineal title though if Mosley unifies with Berto. That should definitely rank him back over Pacquiao. If it doesn't, then the Ring is corrupt.

There are no stated limitations ........... Bizaar, but true.
As stated, he cannot lose it in principle ... he has to lose it in the ring.
And I do agree with you 100% that Lineal Champions shouldn't be allowed to retire like its a vacation .... because it really screws everything up.
Boxing is a sport that revolves around the Top-Guy and when that is in question - you have people like Mosley {For lack of a better example} running and yelling to all who will listen that "HE IS THE TOP-DOG" when in reality he isn't ...... it is still Floyd.
That can't be true bro... That means Lennox Lewis can still come out of retirement and claim the lineal title? Ricardo Lopez? That just makes no sense. When you retire you are the lineal champ.
i think mosley and mayweather both have a symbolic claim to being the man... mosley beat margarito, who beat cotto, while mayweather retired for reasons unknown and decided to come back, and is still unbeaten. manny actually has the least claim, banking on the possibility that margo cheated when he beat cotto, which isn't conclusively proven, and we don't know if he'd have beaten cotto anyway if he hadn't cheated. manny's ranked #1 by the ring magazine mostly because of the quality of his wins, not because he proved it through some rules.
that's why i think the winner of manny-floyd should fight mosley if mosley gets past berto... but if berto pulls out a victory, that fight becomes irrelevant, and pac-mayweather will be for all the marbles.
What is the limit of the temporary retirement?

mayweather lost his lineal title when he announced his retirement. we all know he's unbeaten and he's the man who beat the man (which is part of why this fight is so intriguing), but you can't retire for a while, give everyone else a chance to fight each other, maybe crown a new champion here and there, and come back and say you're still on top... it's just not how it happens.
that's why leonard fought hagler for a middleweight belt when he came back (he won). same with ali going through the motions of challenging frazier again after his 3 year retirement (he lost the first). you gotta prove you still got it by facing the best in the division.

According to the rules ... Floyd is still the Lineal Champ.
He cannot lose it during a temporary retirement ..... He still must lose it in the ring.
"Another boxer can only win the lineal championship by defeating the reigning lineal champion in the ring. The lineal champion is described as "the man who beat the man"."
"An issue in the implementation of a "lineal championship" is what to do if the lineal champion retires, dies, or moves to a different weight class. Different ways of resolving this vacancy mean the "lineal championship" may itself be subject to dispute. In the NBA/NYSAC era, a title vacancy was generally filled by having a box-off between 2, 4, or even more top-ranked contenders. Since the modern lineal championship is merely a notional title tracked by fans, there is no money or organization to arrange such box-offs, and there may not be consensus on who the top contenders are."

the ideal situation would have been if mayweather took on mosley for his first fight after his retirement, like sugar ray leonard took on hagler for the middleweight belt...
then this fight would have been for the WBA, WBO, ring magazine and P4P belts. oh well
Exactly that was the ideal situation.

Mayweather was and Is the lineal WW champion. when IBF champ Vernon Forrest beat WBC champ Shane Mosley then -> WBA/WBC champ Mayorga -> IBF/WBC/WBA Spinks -> Judah -> Baldomir -> Mayweather. you have to beat the man to be the man. like it or not FMJ is still the man at WW
The Ring belt is a different mater.
No Floyd is not the lineal champion. He gave it up when he retired.

lineal title?..didnt Cotto win his WBO title that Paul Williams vacated in a vacant bout vs Jennings?
Well the WBO title dont mean nothing as part as lineal goes. The top 2 ranked fighters can fight for the vacant lineal title. And, if Berto edges Mosley. Then you probably would see Floyd take the #2 spot. Which would make that fight for the lineal belt. But, if Mosley dominates Berto. Then you might see him switch spots with Pac. And, that would mean Floyd-Pac fight would not be for the lineal title.

I think we have to wait what happens with Mosley-Berto first before answering that question.
