Marquez is an all time great, where from 50-100 he ranks I do not know.
Marquez out did marco with there common opponents (pac, peden, r.juarez) and erik also out did marco with there significant opponents (pac, ayala, junior jones)
Marquez was really technically solid back at 126, rarely got hit but was not as entertaining back then compared to the last couple of years we have seen him
you rate fighters on there resume so of course erik and mab should be higher than Marquez
but for those of you saying that mab or erik would have crushed Marquez at feather either did not see Marquez fight in those days or do not know what you are talking about.
those are competitive fights. that could have happen but for whatever reason they did not materialize.
He's top 100 at this point at least, no doubt. He is above Calzaghe for sure, but I'm gonna leave him out for the rest of my reply. JMM seems like he has $ signs in his eyes rather than further solidifying his legacy, and that's disappointing to me. He should fight the Bradley-Peterson winner for a fourth title and forget about Hatton.
he Went 12 rounds with FLoyd because EVERYBODY goes 12 rounds with Floyd. Floyd played with him in the ring and it was a shame because he clearly had EVERY advantage. (weight, age, etc.) That was a fight everybody knew was a mismatch. Thats like having Cotto fight Pavlik at 157 and Pavlik comes in at 159. Plus Cotto was no business going around 160. Just like Marquez has no business going to 147 or going within 7 pounds that weight.
that explains the 63 KO%, JMM a blown up lightweight shouldn't have lasted more than 6 rounds. I guess you think nothing of Fighters who dare to be Great.
Its Obvious by the time Marquez beat him, Barrera was already OLD in boxing terms. Maybe a year younger then Marquez, but older in the ring. If you know what i mean.If Pacquiao got credit for beating a Morales that was coming off a clear loss to Zahir Raheem and was struggling to make 130, why cant Marquez get credit for beating WBC Super featherweight Champion Barrera that had not lost since 2003 to Manny Pacquiao?
Im tired of hearing pac fans try and down play JMM's wins. You need to take a look at Pacquiaos resume, outside of the first barrera win, after he got outboxed by a past it Morales, he beat a shot weight drained Morales, barely edged an old marquez in a fight many thought marquez won, beat legendary david diaz(ok ill give him that one), beat a vicious beast in oscar de la hoya, beat one of the most polished ATG's to ever come out of europe, and then beat a flawless cotto at 145 that had never been stopped before.
I think marquez is a bit overrated. He lost to pacquiao, john, norwood, struggled with an old barrera, almost lost to juan diaz, beat an old casamayor. I'm not gonna mention about the mayweather fight because we all know that is a sham anyway. So his overall status in history is going to be based on close losses and close wins. He is highly regarded by boxing fans because of his close fights with pacquiao and that is the highlight of his career, but the fact is he still lost.
I agree. He is a great or VERY GOOD fighter no doubt. to me will be a HOFer, but not a ATG. His Resume isn't good enough.
it all depends on what you consider schooling.
Yep, thats what it depends on. Im pretty sure nobody else thinks a close fight is a schooling to either fighter.
oh definitely, both Morales and Barrera have a deeper resumes, thats why they went downhill so soon, i rank both higher not by a mile, but i rate them higher. Marquez's prime was probably at 126, 130 and he kept it to 135, he did KO the top two lightweights, Casa and Juan Diaz were much more dangerous opponents than David Diaz, Morales got derailed at 135, so did Marco(yea both were falling by the time they go there), but Marquez became the #1 lightweight. Then went all they way up to 147 to fight an ATG in skills, and lasted 12 rounds when others don't.
my personal favorite out of the 3 is Morales, but i have to give Marquez props i cant let my emotions get in the way.

you said WITHOUT the KD's the fight would have been a complete schooling. But he STILL got KD, thats what im saying. ANd it wasn't a complete schooling. Schooling sombody is like Barrera-Naz, Hopkins-Pavlik, Hopkins-Trinidad, Mosley-Margarito. And Marquez-Pacquiao was nothing like those. Pacquiao didn't get a COMPLETE SCHOOLING. He lost most the rounds but still was in the fight every second.
it all depends on what you consider schooling.
i say he is better than morales and barrera so i would say he is atg
**** he'll never be better than any of those two greats. Never. You could never be an ATG with a draw against the Pacman, past primed Barrera, a win over shot Casa, and an exposed Diaz.

you people don't appreciate fighters, pretty sad actually.
I mean who has Marquez beat at featherweight to tell me that he could beat Morales????? the only thing that i could say is (HE ALMOST BEAT PACQUIAO) Marquez is a great fighter, but not a Legend.
don't forget the fight against John a very skilled fighter.
not a legend? wtf currently the best Mexican fighter, while the other faded into obscurity, of coarse his a legend, he will be remembered as the guy that has two classic fights with the Great Pacquiao. and he is still isn't done, not at his best but h'e not done yet.

i just feel that he Morales and Barrera did more in/for boxing then Marquez and thats what makes them higher on my list. (Plus i think they would beat Marquez prime for prime) i mean when is Marquez prime exactly??

come on man Marquez the guy that has never been stopped, wasn't stopped by the most skilled Boxer of the decade 3 weights divisions above his best, would get stopped by Morales? Morales wasn't even a Great puncher. Quit the bullshit, that fight would have been ferocious. not saying Marquez would win, but it would be close.

ha! come on are you ****ing with me?, i just said even with the KD's Marquez WON, i'm not the only one who saw it that way, its clear that many saw Marquez winning the 1st and 2nd.

I Say Barrera Outboxes him.
And Morales Knocks him down 2-3 times throughout the fight possible TKO mid-late rounds.
But Marquez wouldn't let them take his heart. I just haven't seen Anything that he could do that could beat Morales or Barrera in their PRIMES. Barrera beat him IN MY EYES. Barreras Jab was eating Marquez up.
