Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. was upset by the Australian Danny Green, the 40-year-old boxer was stopped in the first round after the ref called the fight when Jones received a barrage of blows immediately after being dropped from a right hand. According to Jones however the fight was stopped prematurely as the majority of Green's final onslaught was blocked.
"You know I went in there, I was feeling him out keeping at distance with the jab but then I got lazy with my back near the corner and didn't defend myself properly. I made a silly mistake and got caught it's as simple as that, props to Danny Green for doing what he had to he saw the opportunity and took advantage of it. I was still hurt from the knockdown so I was looking to recover and just get my senses back. Most of his shots weren't getting through my guard so I didn't know why the ref stopped it. If I had known the referee was going to jump in and stop it, I would have tried to fight back or get out of there."
Whether or not Jones decides to step back in the ring is unclear but the Pensacola native revealed no intentions of winding down his legendary career, citing a potential rematch with Bernard Hopkins as one of the main reasons.
"This was just a temporary setback, I've been in this position many times before. A true fighter wouldn't just get up and quit, I still want the rematch with Bernard . I know he wants it, I want it, the fans want it. There's no reason for it to not happen."

Seems like Roy still wants that fight with Hopkins, personally I would still like to see it. Roy beats Danny Green 9/10 times anyway.
Roy got hurt on a fluke placed punch, it his own fault though, he turned his head with the punch, its not like he got his ass beat the whole fight and then got knocked the **** out, he got caught cold in the first minute of the fight, that shit happens all the time, just ask joe calzaghe.
Agreed, I think Green got lucky. It's not like Roy got dominated for 5 rounds before the knockdown came.

Roy did look like he got hurt by the shot, but seemed to recover okay. Looked like he blocked most of what came after, but he should have been returning punches at some point.
Lol I just looked at my boxing caldender and December is Roy Jones Jr.
I think Jones should fight Hopkins (likely lose), beat Anderson Silva then have a retirement fight in Florida.
I still wouldn't mind Jones-Hopkins 2, why not? Roy is getting KOed all the time but if he's not gonna stop fighting it is what it is. May aswell go for Jones-Hopkins 2 aslong as they are both fighting. Jones will be seen as another fighter who stayed around too long but whatever, he's getting paid and is still decent.
If Roy wants to fight, that's his decision. All the pussies who are worried about his health need to step aside and let the man handle his business.
Jones vs Hopkins II has been years in the making, would be a perfect fight for Roy to go out on, but he might need to get a win under his belt before the fight happens.
Give it up Roy. If you can't take a shot to the side of the head you shouldn't be in the ring period. Roy knew Green had power so why he keep his hands down like that? Even with Trinidad he kept his hands up like how Winky Wright does it. This is the second time Roy got hit around the same spot and falls down like a tree both times. I know B-Hop and Roy just want a quick pay day but it's definitely going to be hard to sell since Roy didn't even try to fight back after he got dropped.
i agree i don't know why roy did not have his hands up, he knows better. It looks like he got hit on the temple, he was definetely disoriented he could not fight back. Good stoppage by the ref.

I wonder what it takes for RJJ fans to realise that he's shot to shit?
Green got lucky as ****, I bet if they have a rematch next week Jones takes it with ease.
Is it possible Ali could have got stopped while doing his rope a dope? Some boxers use the tactic of letting their opponents wear themselves out by letting their opponent attack while they sit back.
So im a bit confused. Yes RJJ was hurt but thats boxing. Doesnt mean you cant think about riding a storm for a while. RJJ was defending himself. Having your arms up is a boxing move isnt it, and you need clear senses to do it dont you? Defend yourself at all times.
Ali wasn't just laying against the ropes taking a beating he was fighting back as well. If you are hurt and not throwing punches then the ref will stop the fight see McCallum Jackson.

nah roy, its over let it go...roy could never grind his way out, he had to dictate the range and pace of a fight, but as the calzaghe fight showed he couldnt get down in the trenches and fight ugly... balls and all.
I thought Jones fought very well in the trenches. He certainly had to against grinders like Sosa and Gonzalez.

Jones shouldn't be allowed to fight again. That shot he took wasn't much different than the one from Glen Johnson. It's over, Roy. I don't want to see an ESPN 30/30 special on you just because some commission in Florida will keep letting you fight in front of delusional hometown fans.
I agree with Roy, he was intelligently defending himself. Aside from a few bodyshots everything was deflected off his gloves.
I'm certain if Roy made it out of the round he would have won the fight but the ref stole that chance from him.
Hopkins vs Jones II, set it up.
Not sure why you would've been certain that Roy would've won the fight, especially considering he was floored just over a minute into the fight.
I can see both points to be honest and the ref could've let it continue a bit longer but it wasn't a bad stoppage, not by todays standards.

He's a grown man he can continue to fight if he wants. So if he doesn't want to retire yet so be it.
Even though there would be no point for Hopkins to get a win over Roy, if it's not on PPV I will watch it. If it's on PPV I will find a stream or DL afterwards.
About the stoppage I thought it was fair. But it depends on the ref. Sometimes we bitch about the ref failing to stop it, sometimes we bitch about it being stopped too early. I've seen guys in worse off condition continue. But that's irrelevant, the ref saw it to stop the fight, its his job and he did it.
Jones' publicist, Mercedes Ganon, e-mailed to say Jones told her, "No way they should've stopped the fight, had all back together and ready to go."

....yeeeeaaaaa
riiiight
that's just Roy's ego talking. The ref did his job well. He gave Roy ample time to prove that he could still exchange... but Roy wobbled back to the ropes and did nothing for another string of punches. It's ok Roy you left on your shield. It's ok to hang them up, you had a helluva run.
