Manny had a bit of difficulty dealing with Cotto's cross. In the last 2 rounds, while Cotto was struggling to stay on his feet, he was landing some good cross punches. They were really snapping Manny's head back.
I've spent the last week thinking about the inevitable Mayweather/Pacquiao fight and I just can't think of any way Pacquiao will be able to deal with Mayweather's cross. It is (in my opinion) the most perfectly timed punch in all of boxing. If Mayweather uses this punch to pot shot and counter pacquiao I feel like it's an easy UD.
But i didn't make this thread to convince you all that mayweather will win the fight. I'm not a typical boxing scene fanboy. Quite the opposite in fact. I want to be convinced that Pacquiao can deal with this strategy.
I was so sure that Cotto was going to win last saturday. I went on and on about how ridiculous the betting lines were. Pacquiao through punches from angles that I just didn't understand. I mean honestly the angles were so awkward yet perfect ... I don't even know what to say about his style ... just WOW. I dont think anyone in the history of boxing has fought with his style before. No comparisons due him justice.
So back to my original question: How in the world will Pacquiao stop Mayweather's pot-shot right cross?
Man I'm speaking on technique. Your telling me weight enhances technique and skill?
Please show me an interview before the Pac-JMM 2nd fight where Roach said Manny had weight issues.....
^^^^this was before the 2nd Marquez fight.......in no way did Roach indicate they were gonna have weight issues.....come on S A M
This was just last year...2008...we are in 2009...this is the same Pac just fighting more tailored opposition...I respect your opinion but I gotta disagree
:pat:
Cutting too much weight makes you weak. When you're cuttin...
Oh FFS... forget it Jiddu. You will never understand. If I find the interview with Roach talking about Paxcquiao's last fights at 130, I will post them. I'm not going hunting for them. Call me a liar if you like, whatever, I really couldn't give a f*ck anymore.

What will be more funny is all these discussion and then floyd's not fighting pac or anybody else in the elites.
I'm getting tired of floyd. All talks no walks but runs.
- by not giving floyd space
- good head movement which obviously pac has down
- using his "iron" chin lol.
To be honest Floyd's power is a wildcard. No one truly knows how much power he has because of his past hand injuries and he never really loads up. If we continue to see the same power that we have seen the last couple fights from floyd then pac will have no trouble walking past them.
I think once Manny realizes he cant rush in vs Mayweather like he has in previous fights his agg...
--- SNIP ---
Jiddu, you act like Pacquiao is a stupid cunt. He isn't.

Pac has looked fast in his last 4 fights vs slow left handed fighters. Just last year in 2008 he fought Marquez and was out landed and outboxed...and this was the new and improved Pac.
Is it a coincidence Team Pac hasnt fought any right hand dominant boxers since? I dont think Pac is faster that Mayweather, Pac swarms with punches and he lunges & stretches for punches. I think Mayweather would eat Pac man up with Counters and lead right hands. Mayweather will put in a nice body attack on Pac too, Mayweather is taller, has a longer reach and has a defense that is going to frustrate him. I dont think Pac is fast enough to counter Mayweather coming in with the straight right. Mayweather can easily outbox him from the outside, and then what is Pac gonna do? Bob and weave & Jab on his toes?....UM NO!....
Mayweather is much smarter than Pac......Pac's style is very effective against stationary brawlers or slugger because he can out maneuver them and out speed them. But vs techinical boxer's his style is all wrong and once he realizes that Mayweather doesnt care to engage him and is easily scoring from a distance, he will get frustrated and desperate and Mayweather will pick him apart.
Jiddu, I disagree, my friend. 2008/Marquez II was not the "improved" Pacquiao at all. In fact he was drained at 130, it was killing him, and at this point his right wasn't anywhere near as powerful as it is now.
2009/2010 140lb+ Pacquiao is much better.
Personally, I don't think Manny will give a crap about Floyd's best shots.

I see what you are saying, but how would the Pac of 2007 that fought Marco Antonio Barrera to a UD do Vs the Hatton that Mayweather fought in 2007?
You mean the Barrera that ran for the entire fight and was scared to engage, and you're talking about the Hatton that looked like shit against every welter he faced?
He'd still knock his ass out.

Tell you what, maybe ask Shawn in this thread? He probably is able to discuss technical details better than anyone else on the forums right now. Peace.

Very good analysis. I also feel that way as well. The only thing I would beg to differ is the fact that Pacquiao has enough power and speed to catch Mayweather off guard, along with an awkwardcy that can cause problems for Mayweather's counters. Besides that this pretty much sums up how this match can turn out to be IMO. Hopefully it doesn't though, I'd love to see Pacquiao surprise me again.
Pac has looked fast in his last 4 fights vs slow left handed fighters. .
lol, if thats even true, how does that not work against Mayweather as well?
I know you specifically stated left handed fighters,
but in the last couple of years,
they have 3 common opponents.
So because of those opponents,
it makes Pac look faster,
but not Floyd?
Your math isn't working.
Interesting. I didn't even notice that Mayweather was not throwing rights in his last fight. That is his 'problem' hand though.
Well from what i saw he was leading with his left hook for the first half of the fight and then started popping out the straight right more and more towards the end, i certainly didn't see any hesitation to use it, and your question is a good one, any knowledgable boxing fan knows that Manny struggles with right handed counter punchers and who was the last one he faced? yep Marquez, i think Floyd is gonna work that straight right against Pac all night, and we all know Manny jumps in with many of his punches so he'll be wide open for it.

1) foot work
2) bobing and weaving
3) walk right through it
4) counter w/ left cross
Interesting. I didn't even notice that Mayweather was not throwing rights in his last fight. That is his 'problem' hand though.
He was in economical form, basically winning the fight on the jab alone, with a few minor exceptions.
Morales and Marquez had success with it. You could count on one hand the amount of times Floyd threw it against Marquez, though, which brings into question the health of his hand.

I'm sure after George blasted out Frazier and Norton, people said if Frazier's left hook didn't deter him and Norton's overhand right didn't do shit, what could Ali do to hurt him? It's the punches you don't see, man. Besides, Floyd, when his hands are healthy, has underrated pop.
