Manny Steward said Pacquiao is right up their with Sugar Ray Robinson.
Manny did a great thing. He took Cotto's soul, but how can you put him in the same neighborhood as Sugar Ray Robinson.
In a way, they fought in two completely different sports.
Go ask Freddie Roach if Pac, Shane, or Floyd can beat SRR at 147. It would be interesting. Hell, I would like to see what any of the noted players in boxing feel about that.
Damn it's the truth... Leonard, Mayweather, Jones at 160, Pacquiao at 147... They all beat Ray Robinson he was not technically sound enough To defeat these boxer and it's just because times have changed, I'm not ranking these guys over Ray Robinson but would they beat him? He'll yes they would... If uve honestly watched and studied tape on Ray Robinson how could u honestly think he could be Ray Leonard? No fkn way... Times are different... Like in basketball, Jerry West one of the G.O.A.T ranked well above Kobe Bryant in the ATG's list... But could he beat Kobe in a one on one game if the played today? No fkn way not in a 100 trys he could
No fighter will ever surpass Ray Robinson. So good they had to created the term Pound for Pound just for him.
they did'nt create the term pound for pound for him actually, that's a myth
This was debated on here a couple days ago. Most believe Cotto is a Hall of Famer IF he can get 1 or 2 more good wins. Hall of Fame and ATG are two different things.
Yeah you could probably be somewhere in the top 500 or more to be in the hall of fame!
you can compare em quite easily! when they fought back then and that many times, they werent fighting the best opposition every fight! They had to fight that often to make decent money. They didnt get paid like they do nowadays off the TV companys! You can make just a good legacy with much much less fights. all dapends on the opposition!
I lost a lot of respect for manny this weekend. He lost a lot of credibility. He's an HBO cheerleader now not an expert analyst.
same here that was a fuken joke
200 fights but a lot of those were tomato cans. Nowadays they fight less tomato cans and promoters tend to get their fighters in the ring with a threat earlier in the fighters careers, that's the only difference.
Want an old school fighter record?
Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. 40+ fights, hasn't fought ANYBODY worth mentioning yet.
He undefeated though.
Thats all that matters.
fsl.
Cotto a hall of famer?????? Nyahahahaha. For what, for beating a 36 yr. old Shane Mosley? Nyahahahahha.

Robinson is the GOAT, imo. I'm just saying alot of those 200 fights are tomato cans, but i'm not saying he never fought anyone. You can't be great without fighting anyone worth it. Just saying the flashy 100-200 fight record on old school fighters are deceiving.
But hey, at least they kept active. Keep them poor and needing money and you get to see some fights. Yeah, you had them Knocking out not so good fighters to just make a buck but damn...I think I would go see it.
In the end, the record is about who you fought that was good, very good, Great...so that number does lower. But, they still fought the good-great fighters over and over.
Take this for example: SRR, was a 147 pounder, moved up to face Jake LaMotta and won their first match. About a 5 months later, he fights Jake again at MW. SRR lost this time. About 3 weeks later, they are fighting again and SRR wins...and that wouldn't be the last time they met.
So many stories like this...especially even before that era.
People can say what they want about the real old timers, but what Sam Langford did was crazy. Weight-classes? What weight-classes?
Just pay me my money.
Can things be over-blown? Of course. But hungry fighters can be desperate fighters and when that is in place...yeah...some good things can happen for fight fans.
People are what they are in their respective time so as long as there is some respect for the fighters I'm cool.
The same goes for those that shit on new fighters...it's wrong.

True...but they also beat up on each other many times over. You can fight the same top guy several times.
I love Ray Robinson and he's one of the greatest if not greatest ever... But to be honest boxers today are alot more technically sound and more physically gifted due to it... Leonard or Mayweather would have embarassed Ray Robinson if they had fought today and that's just the truth... shit Pacquiao would of given him the bizness as well

They were just trying to get paid. So they'd fight more than their share of tomato cans ont he way. Not as safe as sparring, but close to it in competition.
It is different times. What Pac is doing is comparable to what fighters did 40 years ago though.
It's said that old school fighters would be constantly getting an education in boxing in the ring, and not in training.
During his prime, it wasn't uncommon that Willie Pep would fight 10-12 times in a year. That's incredible. I think it was tougher back then because of less weight divisions, less belts, and more fights.
Pep was 229-11-1 in his career. Going by win percentages, that's just above 95%, and by today's standards the equivelent of a 42-2 record.

even though it doesnt make you a better overall boxer by fighting more guys, ssr is obviously still different level to pac.
i think everyone was overwhelmed after pac schooled cotto and emmanuel probably meant that pac is closest you can get today to the level ssr and armstrong were. i still think he's a great commentator homie.:boxing:

Absolutely true. Boxing was much more brutal back in the day with the smaller gloves, dirty tactics, amount of rounds, regularity of competition, etc....
what they said.

How do you compare fighters of today with a guy who fought 200 times in 15 years? | BoxingScene Community
