Since the ninth assault, trainer of Miguel Cotto, Joe Santiago, had the intention of stopping the fight with Manny Pacquiao at the punishment he had received the boricua.
However, Santiago conceded that the final decision was Cotto and therefore allowed to continue in combat.
"We were outstanding since the ninth. I asked another assault and responded very well in the assault ten, "Santiago said yesterday after returning to the Island
"In the eleven reached the sidewalk and said, 'Well, I think this is over'. He said, 'Let me finish. Trust me '. I let him finish and was the referee who stopped her. That was all, "added Santiago, who, however, considered that the officer Kenny Bayless did well to stop it.
Meanwhile, Santiago said he was surprised by the strength that Pacquiao took the impact, both in its strength as its stuck, preventing develop its fight Cotto.
"The instructions were as seen in the first assault. If failed, failed. We came out very strong ... Not a bad night, "said Santiago.
Asked about whether Cotto should retire, he replied: "If I tell you now, would be very premature. We will be meeting, and plans to go see. "
Gotta love boxing. You lose two fights and you're a wash up. I still like Cotto. He just made like 10 mil. I say fight Marg once more. He might lose but I still want to see it. Cotto needs some rest though, a tune-up, then Marg, then retire. They took alot out of eachother and they both got TKO'd in their last fights. LETS GET IT ON.
Agreed. Cotto still has his skills. He's still a sharp puncher and is a threat at the welterweight division. He just needs someone to CORRECT HIS MISTAKES. He was doing excellent in the beginning of the fight against pac working well behind the left jab. He lost control of himself and decided to start swinging wildly with Manny and thats when he got caught. If he had just followed his game plan and boxed Manny instead of trying to fight with him, he would have done a lot better.
big props to cotto for wanting to finish the fight. i understand the danger, but if cotto had quit again, he'd probably had that cloud over him for the rest of his life.
warrior.
Santiago should of stopped it after the 9th. Cotto was getting beat up.
It should of been his decision to stop the fight, Not Cotto's.
Props to Cotto for wanting to fight on though, he is tough.
I think some of you guys are being a little too judgmental on Santiago's decision making. The decision to stop a fight is a tough call for any trainer to make because there are so many factors involved in making that choice. You could make the argument that their friendship may have gotten in the way of rational thinking but it's not uncommon for a trainer to honor his fighter's wishes against his better judgment. Every boxer and trainer has a give and take relationship. As we saw on 24/7, Roach and Pacquiao have a give and take relationship and that goes on during fights as well. Roach let Manny get away with letting Cotto hit him on the ropes. Does that mean Freddie is now a trainer not in control? Of course not.
If we're gonna talk responsibility, I don't see anyone pointing fingers at veteran referee Bayless who was well within his rights to stop the fight earlier but waited till the 12th. What was his reasoning for allowing the fight to go on? Santiago may not have been the best trainer for Cotto but let's not rake him over the coals for something every trainer is guilty of at some point in their careers.

it's not that he's washed up but he's been in too many wars and they have been pretty much back to back.
i don't think we will ever see Cotto do what he did to Torres getting of the canvas to win ever again the way in which Pacquiao and Margarito beat him down is very demoralizing he wasn't just outboxed he's been battered badly i think him fighting Margarito again could be very detrimental to his health and well being
The fight was a good example of a corner failing to save a fighter from himself.
This...
This match was one of the most hyped matches in a while, so Cotto was not going to 'quit'. It was the responsibility of Santiago to say to Cotto "If you dont start showing something, i AM throwing in the towel". Just another example of how Cottos corner failed him
A warrior like Cotto will never say the word quit, he would rather go down swinging. "Average" Joe should've impose his will as the head trainer, take the decision out of Cotto's hands and stop the fight after the 9th round ended. Miguel's wife Melissa would've have been a better cornerman for Cotto as she left early just before the 9th round, knowing fully well the dangers and hazards boxing can give to a boxer, Joe almost ended Cotto's boxing career...

another checkmark on joe santiago!
the dude is not ready for this level.. and that can really cost cotto not even just a fight but his own health......
Though the translation is broken, I can still understand so thnks for this article..
he didn't feel he fully had authority to stop the fight like Emmanuel Stewart said Cotto runs that corner
Evangelista would've stopped it sooner i believe

Its a trainer job to protect his fighter, sometimes the fighter has to much pride to accept defeat as in the case of Bowe/Golota II.
