Even though he's just 26 years old, Juan Diaz has accomplished a lot in this sport. Title reigns at lightweight and wins over top competition.
But one must ask, have we already seen the best Juan Diaz has to offer?
Can he become more than what he is today? Or will it be all downwards for Diaz?
I had the opportunity to see him live when he was 19 years old, and i gotta admit that he seems less fast than he was. We can also suppose that he's fighting better and bigger guys too. He seemed very fine to me in his last two fights.
his best days are behind him. He can still fight at a pretty high level but his style of fighting isn't meant to last. The dude is smart and has a college education so he definitely has a backup plan if he can't fight anymore
He's an exciting fighter to watch though, thats for sure. I really enjoyed the Julio Diaz, Freitas and Marquez fight. It's too bad he wasn't able to use those same aggressive tactics on Paulie.
For sure. Win, lose, draw, the fans always get their money's worth when this kid fights.
I wonder how good he was in the first place. He was definitely good, I'm just not sure he was ever a potentially great fighter. I don't think he's necessarily fallen off, I just think he can't do the things to elite opponents that he can to mid-level/b-class opponents.
Still one of my favorite fighters to watch though. In my opinion the most exciting fighter in the sport today.
Realistically, being finished is based upon your last leg of your career/the race, so to speak. If he wanted to fight the Michael Katsidis' of the world and make some money, he could even potentially get a rematch with Marquez, who he was beating on points for a while. So, it depends on how you look at it.
If he's going to treat this like it's do or die and that he only will fight the best of the best, he might be in for some trouble.
Beating Paulie again would definitely help him out. However, it's a tough fight.

No he has more. but the only thing I see holding him back is his trainers..he needs to switch up his game plan get a nutritionist and kind of start over. I beleive he can still get cut up and maybe get some more power into his punches. I beleive he has hit a wall at this point..
He will never be cut up, ever. It's not in his genetics. The only way I see this is if he takes steroids or starves himself.
I don't think he has a problem physically, I just think his limitations are in his power mostly. He's a tough, aggressive fighter but his lack of power goes contrary to his style when you think about it.

I think he needs to take some time off depending on how he does against Paulie the second time. Take like a year off, redidicate himself to his body, then take it from there.
There's no reason why Diaz shouldn't continue fighting at 135. If he continues his career at 140 and doesn't make boxing adjustments, his career is over. If he rededicates himself to making 135, I think he'll be much better off.
I like Juan. He's a great role model and a true example of a student-athlete. I wish him nothing but the best.
