if he didn't clown around too much..
I always thought he had pretty good skills but his antics just turned me off his fights. Instead of becoming entertaining, his fights turned to a waste of time, a complete bore.
I think if he cared enough about being a top fighter, I think he had the skills.
Thoughts.
I'm reminded of the Jim Lampley story regarding John McEnroe when it comes to Augustus. Lampley says that McEnroe said "I have more talent in one finger than this guy has in his whole body" and Lampley responds "Yeah but do you have the talent to train for four hours a day?"
Augustus definitely had the skill, but did he have the character? He takes fights on short notice, smokes reefer between fights, signs contracts with a new manager or promoter every week, etc. He just didn't have the internal intangibles to be a top notch fighter.
Being an excellent gym fighter doesn't equate to having what it takes to be a champion.
I agree with most here, especially with the robberies. Just recently, he outworked Figueroa and thought that he got robbed again.
True that. The judges didn't like his style. I wished he had been more serious.
Do you think the robberies changed his style? Did he always fight this way?
Nope
I had him beating Micky Ward. Augutus cleary beat Ward in my opinion but it was close.

Well, not without talent that's for sure. He's the one that gave Mayweather Jr his hardest fight , up until today none ever gave Mayweather that beating that Emanuel did simply because Mayweather couldn't figure out how to get to him, his awkward style.
this dude got bout 35 wins and 35 losses with bout 30 robberies. he couldve been something but i think the judges didnt like his style
a lot of his robberies were in the other guys hometown too
Funny thing is that Augutus didn't have to mess around. Most of his opponents were probably thinking, "Mother fucker fight!" and funny thing is he could do that. He could brawl with the best of them.
I disagree, I found his clowning around more entertaining.
You gonna tell me this isn't entertaining. Once you have that many loses, the only thing that runs threw your mind is, "Fuck It!".
