I personally would rate Mayweather as the greatest boxer of today (P4P King), but in my eyes there is possibly more to prove. In my eyes, to rate Mayweather the absolute greatest of today, hands down, he would need to suffer a defeat and come back from it and beat his opponent in a rematch.
For instance, lets pretend Pacman beats Cotto and a fight is arranged for Mayweather Pacman ( I personally think the Cotto fight will be very close, although I do think it will end by KO and not go the length). If Pacman beats Mayweather and Mayweather retires then I will take back alot of the praise that I have for Mayweather. Sure he will still be in the history books and I will still love him as a fighter, but for him to truly be great in my mind, he needs to bounce back after a defeat and beat his opponent. I think this will prove Mayweathers P4P status.
Pacquiao has already proved his metal, being beat by Morales and fighting him again twice and winning both rematches. For this reason I won't begrduge people there right for claiming Pacquiao as P4P Champ in there head.
He won't ever be as great as he can be till he looses then proves that he can come back and beat that person. That is what defines greatness to me more than going through your career undefeated and not fighting the biggest threats.
He doesnt need to lose and win a comeback in order to be considered great. He needs to fight an opponent who most people believe he cant beat, and win.
The thing is there isn't a fighter out there now he wouldn't be favored against.
he should just win the fight....
beat pac, beat mosley, beat cotto.... then he can retire and I'll call him the best of this generation...
if he fights pwill (if pwill beats pavlik at 160) I might call him the GOAT.
He doesn't NEED to lose and come back to prove his status, but does this need to happen before people who hate him admit his status. All the "Pachuggers" and "Pacfans" out there, and whoever else nuthugs whoever else he fights. Will these people ever admit he's P4P champ?
Castillo.
Most people thought he lost. The judges gave it t him. But the fact is he gave Castillo a rematch and won via UD.
Critics still refer to the first fight to detract from his status.

Why would he be greater if he lost to Pac then came back and beat him, than if he were to just beat Pac or whoever convincingly the first time round? If he beat everyone there was to beat by a good margin then it wouldnt be his fault that he's just that superior to his peers.
If Mayweather loses, he will never rematch and risk another loss on his record..
Is this true though? Surely he'll listen to the people who'll be crying out for a rematch, and he'll know he has something to prove. Look at what happened with Castillo, alot of people were calling for that rematch saying Mayweather wouldn't win again and he did go back out and fight him again, and he did win again. Admittedly he did have the first victory already so I'm sure believed himself to beat Castillo again.
