Mayweather's decision to fight both Hatton and Marquez was widely disputed, they were two fighters who were not natural welterweights. It's possible that Floyd will need to face an opponent who is genuinely rated as an elite fighter in the welterweight division if his legacy is to be truly solidified. Even one victory against a highly rated fighter could be enough to sway many of those who express doubts at Mayweather's claims of supremacy.
Which single victory would confirm Mayweather as not only the best welterweight in the world but also a certified all time great?
He's already an ATG due to his previous weight class wins. But his Welterweight resume is terrible.
Williams is staying at 160 unless Floyd offered him a fight which won't happen. Cotto is really a meaningless win now.
He should fight the winner of Berto/Mosley to gain a bit of Welterweight credibility, but i think everyone wants the Pacquiao fight.
although at the moment the hottest thing is pac/mayweather...i dont think that be a fight for mayweather to prove himself, i think he'd outbox pac all night..
i'd like him to fight williams, mosley and cotto (if he still in it)
Any one changed their opinions after the Pacquiao vs Cotto fight? I didn't have Pacquiao as a credible opponent before that because of the size differential but he virtually proved he's a genuine elite WW, there's only 2 pounds in it.
if we just make it one opponent, it'd have to be paul williams.
true although williams is probably the one he's least likely to face right now i guess.
Wow... So who you bumping out, Armstrong, Robinson or Ali???
BTW, I think Mayweather beats Williams 8 times out of 10 as long as the fight is fought below middleweight. At middleweight he only wins 6 times out of 10 :D
On paper I think it puts him up there. Beating those 3 fighters convincingly at this point of there careers would be extremely impressive, but it dont matter cuz I dont think he can beat them all, also depens at which weight. regardless, he wont fight any unless he chooses the weight class which would be toughest on his opponent. he chooses everything..
Tell ya right now, I dont like floyd much. But if he were to beat Pacquaio, Williams, and Mosley within the next couple years he will be in the top 3 for greatest of all time in my opinion.

While Pacquiao has accomplished alot more then Paul Williams. I'm sure everyone here would give Mayweather more credit for beating Paul as oppose to beating Pacquiao. Most, including most Mayweather fans don't see Floyd beating Paul. Paul and then Manny Pacquiao. Sad to say, Mayweather vs Paul isn't gonna happen.
He's an all time great for beating who? aged fighters, asking little fighters to move up and fight him? floyds lat 7 fights. #7.Marquez old (38) out of weight (142) Floyd out of weight 146?) Fights night check the tale of the tape.
#6 Ricky Hatton at 147 smaller guy asked to move up who perhaps who had questionable victories over Luis Collazo after that showing Mayweather felt he could beat him. #5 De La Hoya split decision victory older fighter past his prime just check out his last 4 fights before Mayweather.
#4 Carlos Manuel Baldomir his record tells the story. #3 Zab Judah coming after a lost to the guy before says it all. Who only took three months to prepare for Floyd after that lost. #2 Sharmba Mitchell TKO in 3 by Kostya Tszyu he Floyd never fought. #1 Arturo Gatti had three battles with Micky Ward and was TKO by De La Hoya. Gatti = shot fighter. At least Shane Mosley has never been knocked out and is above all those previously mentioned.

Hes already an ATG, but if he fights/beats Manny, Cotto and/or Mosley his legacy would be completely sealed and he would be a bigger ATG... a Manny Pacquiao win is more career defining though so I voted Manny.
(assuming Cotto loses)
Pacquiao would be a career and era defining win.
Pacquiao and Mosley would erase all doubts anyone has.
Pacquiao and Mosley and Cotto and you got the best resume of this generation.
Many great fighters can achieve one off performances in Boxing because styles make fights, but to assess who is the best you have to fight the best available consistently to establish that.
