Since Mayweather's layoff something seems to have changed
1) training injuries
2) failed to make weight
Is this the same guy who use to train so hard to barely break a sweat? Or is this someone who ran out of money and looked for the easiest source of cash?
I think Floyd estimated that he wouldn't have troubel getting to 144, never realizing that he had gotten older and bigger. Floyd is a full-blown welter now and even he should know by now.
it's SRL we're taking about here...not fraud lol
if you know ray leonard, and the bullsh!t he pulled, especially to win the LHW title, you wouldnt say that at all. you think what happened with mayweather at this weigh in is such a "disgrace" Read about SRL vs Donny Lalonde.
It always crack me up when ppl bring up Leonard on this kind of topic. Shows how much they know about the sport.
What went wrong, and what alot of people ignore, is that he had to become money mayweather to get on anybodies radar. I think mayweather himself resents he had to become who he is today. What also hurt him was as he begin moving and grabbing more titles, the fact that nobody at 140 wanted to openly challange him except vivian harris really hurt his career in the long run, because he instead is blamed for those matches not happening.
Alot of people ripped him for feeling like his lack of fame is due to him being black, but in some ways there is some truth to that. His defensive style isnt pleasing to alot of people, and when he was dominating, winning fighter of the year and all that, nobody cared. Whereas if he was from another country, or carried the banner of another country, say for instance like de la hoya, hatton or pacquiao, to where he could be appreicated and have a following just for being dominant in the ring. I think in many ways he wanted that, his interviews of late suggest that.
Many in here will deny it, but back in 1999, when mayweather was beating the hell out of people, knocking them out, being humble, nobody cared about him. Hell as lately as 2004, when he was still in between being that way, nobody cared. Alot of people here lie their asses off and speak of "when floyd was challanging himself i loved him" this guy had almost no play on here except with the hardcore who followed the featherweights and could appreciate his style.
Mayweather is now caught between having to continue to ham it up and be money mayweather, and wanting to have a huge american following of fans who truely appreciate him.
But for mayweather, thats just not going to happen.
Im sure you rememeber this place back in 06, "fight baldomir, who you ducked to fight judah, win the ring championship and then hell gain some respect"
it never happened. The reality, no matter what this guy does, he wont get that respect. When you try to let people know hes CLEARLY going to fight either cotto, pac, or SSM, people run to "no he wont, hell retire again". People are not going to give this guy any slack at all.
And as far as what happened at the weigh in, marquez took the money and mayweather came in with an extra, whopping, 2 fukking lbs. Im sorry. Marquez didint make him shed the weight, marquez was paid, nobody was cheated.
When it comes to Mayweather, I think "hate the game not the players" is key. He did what he did to make money. Did I like it? No. Can I blame him? No.
I remember watching him at 130, and yeah very few ppl took notice of the incredible fighter he was. I also remember he was calling out welterweights back then (Oscar and Shane). It would have been interesting.
I think the '03-'05 stint of sub par opposition was mostly due to personal problems (he even fought only once in '04 if I remember correctly)

You hit on some good points bro. Especially the bold. and I believe that the boxing media has a LOT to do with how he is treated as a boxer and the criticism that he gets that doesn't seem to stop. But I know for a FACT that he can beat Manny, Cotto, or who ever else and they would STILL GIVE RIP THE GUY. TRUE STORY.
yeah I am curious. So many things went wrong in this guy's career. I mean he had an excellent career, but it could have been a lot better (and more satisfactory to us fans) with that kind of dedication and ring smarts.
I mean... the ppl he fought when he should have been at his physical peak (2003-2005). Chasing Oscar. Fighting Oscar. And now this 2 years layoff. with the clear idea of having a rematch. I am not saying all or none of this is his fault, but it just went down this way.

I hope I see a slightly aged version of the great fighter I watched develop over the year, against another great fighter, possibly the best mexican fighter after JCC?
over the last year me and you have talked about this extensively. I think with age has come these issues that most fighters deal with as they get older. The reality is, neither of will know until tonight. Certainly, this makes his matchups alot more even then they were a few years ago. With the possibility that he will get old overnight at any moment.

SRL retired for 2 years, came back and beat MH for the Middleweight title in 87'.
You may never know :dunno:.

Taking off 2 years can mess with you I'm sure. Especially when the guy you are fighting has been kicking ass while you've been away. It should be a good fight.

he went half assed on this one...and tonight, hopefully, pays for it
That's my point. This is the same guy who trained for Henry Bruseles as intensely as if he was going to face Aaron Pryor.

that's your answer.
