I was thinking about this the other day. It would make for an interesting (possibly damn boring) fight, at least in the beginning.....but, bear with me. We've all read the posts and articles (including Coach Roach) on how the counterpunching styles of both fighters could make this a snoozer. We all know what Floyd will do. What if Marquez gave him a taste of his own medicine? Picture this. Marquez enters the fight waiting for Floyd, even throwing in some shoulder rolls for good measure. Imagine Marquez waiting on Floyd and fighting a totally defensive style, occasionally feinting, waiting for "Money" to make a move and countering? Imagine him keeping this up for 1, 2 or three rounds? Do this until Floyd gets frustrated thinking WTF? He could be thrown off by this strategy, become more and more aggressive, committing and paying the price, with Marquez now countering and dictaing the pace, completely reversing roles. What are your thoughts?
LOL PBF can't come forward like Juan Diaz can. If he did he would be completely out of his element and would practically be handing JMM the fight on a silver platter.
Floyd is going to want to slow this fight way way way down. A lot of Clinching, running, and show boating, If he can throw some elbows in to the mix even better for him. But I don't think he will be able to throw as many as he did with hatton. (I think he landed more elbows than punches hahaha).
If Mayweather was to come forward, he would do it in a skillful way, the same way he did against Judah in the later rounds and also against Mitchell. He can be an effective aggressor once he has figured out his opponent, the same way he did late in the Hatton fight. He knew that Ricky was starting to wear down, so he started to come forward but still keeping his defense tight and picking his spots.
If the weight starts to take its toll on Marquez in the latter rounds and Floyd senses it, then i could definitely see it happening. Don't forget that Marquez is not necessarily young in boxing, hes had his wars and it can show up in this fight especially since hes moving up in weight and against a younger fighter.
Marquez should wait for floyd to come to him. If floyd still runs around the ring like a twat against a significantly smaller man. I'm not ever going to watch him fight again even against Pac( Ok that not true ).. But seriously floyd would look like a big puss if he lets a smaller, older, slower fighter do the stalking.
Do you really expect anything less.. that is what Floyd does.

demarcus corley stunned mayweather, he aint on jmms level...to be fair. why do i find myself always correcting fans of pacquiao and their boxing analysis?
I don't think Marquez was thinking about defense against Diaz, I think he was in warrior mode that night.
The reason why I think the fight will resemble Marquez Pacquiao 2 is because both fighters were mainly focused on defense that night. Marquez knows Mayweather likes fighting against pressure fighters with poor defense and excels against those fighters. Marquez also knows Mayweather has never ever fought a counterpuncher with good defense, much less an expert counterpuncher like Marquez.
Mark my words, Marquez will be in counterpunching mode this Saturday.
I personally wouldn't consider Marquez as a pressure fighter, more of a skillful boxer counter puncher/brawler IMO. Also, I would say Castillo and Oscar were both pressure fighters and they definitely showed good defense against Mayweather. That was one thing i felt throw Floyd off in his first fight with Castillo, was the fact that he was able to come in behind a tight defense, pick off punches and skillfully get on the inside( and keep in mind that Mayweather was moving up to Castillo's weight class) and work Floyd's body. I also think that both versions of Castillo and Oscar that Floyd beat, would beat Marquez pretty handily.
So with that being said, i think if Marquez was to adopt a pressure style, he would be coming out of what he is naturally, and that can become costly in a big fight and against Floyd Mayweather, not to mention he's moving up to a weight class that Mayweather has been for about 6 years. Taking all of this into account, i cannot see Marquez being effective against Mayweather unless hes extremely rusty or just past his prime. IMO its a borderline mismatch.
Diaz is a pressure fighter, but at the same time, Marquez's defensive flaws were also on display. Diaz was able to back Marquez into the ropes and land FLUSH pretty much at will. Throughout his career, have you ever seen Mayweather take those kinds of constant punches?
May i ask why???

I, dought the Marquez camp would even consider such a stategy. The only chance Marquez has is to seriously work Floyd's body early and take it to him in the championship rounds seeking the K.O. Dought it but its the only rational strategy that gives him a slim chance of winning.

I totally agree. I'm not a Floyd fan but this is pretty obvious. I don't know how people can see the Marquez vs Mayweather any other way but a straight up blow out ready to happen. I've been telling all my Mexican boxing fan friends this but they refuse to listen. I even have two bets going: One for Mayweather to beat Marquez straight up for a a bottle of Patron, the other against Marquez dropping Mayweather for a case of Corona... Looks like I'll be drinking this weekend..lol.
Juan Diaz is a very aggressive fighter that always goes forward. Mayweather is a very defensive fighter who always goes backward. Exactly opposite styles.

It's ideal imo for JMM to counterpunch. It's what he does. Addin all that muscle and alterin his standard style is dangerous for him. I like his chances of gettin a shockin counterpunch KO way more than him pressurin Mr boat buyer to a decision on effective aggression, much less walkin him down and droppin him. But even to consistently counter all nite, JMM gotta have the handspeed and reflexes to time Mr boat buyer. At this weight, I don't see it. He's outgunned in quickness of both hand and foot. But if he could stick to his guns and counter his way to a UD, I could give a shit about the fight bein boring. I ain't payin to watch it, so any method of JMM victory would suffice just fine. I wanna see the upset no matter how it's fashioned. :boxing:

That's pretty much saying that Marquez can out box Mayweather, and i cannot see that happening in no way shape or form. In the middle of the ring, Marquez won't have much success. Either he pressures, or losses a wide decision or maybe even worse then that. Floyd has the faster hand speed, superior defense, better ring smarts and is naturally bigger.

It is not that what makes floyd's fights boring. It is the part where he readjusts that makes him boring. He actually runs away from the opponent and readjusts. That might not seem like a lot but when you factor in the frequency it really slows down a fight. And a slow fight = boring fight. I don't see Marquez doing this.
Believe me I agree it probably won't happen, but I do think it would provide an opportunity for Marquez to throw Floyd off and scramble his head up a bit.
