From today's Arkansas Democrat Gazette:
Taylor tweaks regimen

LITTLE ROCK — Jermain Taylor said he knows that his window as a championship-caliber boxer is slowly closing.
That’s why he’s been willing to do things differently - from where he trains, to what he eats, to even how he trains - as he prepares to take on Germany’s Arthur Abraham in the opening round of the Super Six World Boxing Classic on Oct. 17 in Berlin.
Taylor, a super middleweight from Little Rock, said he found no positives to draw on after his last-second, knockout loss to Carl Froch on April 25. Even the fact that two of the three judges had him ahead 106-102 before the 12th-round knockout was insignificant.
“I feel like just because you’re close, that doesn’t mean anything if you don’t get the victory,” Taylor said. “There was nothing good to come out of that loss. I just wanted to get away from Miami and try something new.”
After years of training primarily in Miami, Taylor moved his training camp to Houston, and he’s been working out at one of former heavyweight champion George Foreman’s training facilities.
“George Foreman asked us to come out here and show us some pointers,” Taylor said in a telephone interview in between training sessions. “He wanted to help us get the championship back. I’ve learned so much from him, and it’s really been a blessing.
“We had to come out here. I mean, when George Foreman talks, you can’t help but listen.”
Next, he hired Danny Smith, who’s best known for training Fernando Vargas, to work alongside Ozell Nelson, and Taylor started eating differently in an effort to increase his stamina and energy.
“I’m eating six meals a day, but those things are a lot healthier,” Taylor said. “I didn’t know that certain things when you eat them make you feel a certain way.
“I’m also lifting weights, which is something I’ve never done as a boxer. A lot of leg presses and a lot of squats.”
Taylor said that he’s up to almost 600 pounds on the leg press after starting out at around200 pounds.
Another big change is the time that Taylor is training.
Taylor is training in such a way that he’s sparring around 1 p.m. because of the seven-hour difference between Central time in the United States and Central European time. The time that Taylor is working out in Houston is equivalent to the fight time in Germany.
That’s about the only accommodation Taylor is making for fighting at O2 World Arena in Berlin. Taylor said he is planning on moving his camp to Berlin sometime between Oct. 1 and Oct. 4.
“I’m not worried about where the fight is,” Taylor said. “It’s going to be me and him in the ring. He’s going to throw the same punches over there that he would throw over here.”
lol at ppl questioning abrahams defense, after ward he has the best defense in the tourney ffs.
abraham is way to mentally strong for jermain, as much as i like taylor abraham will knock him out. with these changes i would give him a good chance against anyone in the tourney except arthur, unlucky for jermain i guess. and after he gets KOd again he will be completely mentally shot. hope im wrong though. maybe, maybe not. abraham has yet to prove himself against the elite..hes not much more experienced than ward and dirrell, he just has more fights..there isnt much of a difference in the competition they have faced when you really look at it. and in abraham's last fight with oral he was getting caught here and there when he would open up to punch, but the thing is oral is a nobody who hasnt faced one good opponent..i dont understand why everyone is jumping on this abraham bandwagon, the guy has yet to prove himself. his best wins are over miranda, who is a one dimensional, sloppy slugger. im taking taylor by STOPPAGE. yep you heard it here first. i think abraham will be exposed.

He's not wrong.
Thanks DStew. JT was one of my favorite fighters before the Steward era began. He has been in decline since then. I even thought he lost to Spinks and Wright.
Jermanin should have kept his first trainer. But if Abraham does not start fast, which he usually doesn't, he will lose. Letting Jermain hang around and not make him work like others have will be a big mistake. Because then, stamina won't be a problem and Taylor can pick up the pace during the second half of the fight. Taylor has stamina issues, slight mental issue, and wasted movement, but the boy has power. He dropped Froch and Pavlik, guys with solid chins. I don't doubt he'll drop Abraham. Abraham's defense against the elite is yet to be seen.
Taylor has a really good chance of beating AA,here's why,AA starts of very slowly, which means Jt is building an early lead!!AA is easy to hit,I know his hands are high, but he backs straight up when u hit him with offence!!JT can punch, that means if AA gets caught with good solid shots for all of 8 rounds,he may not have enough left to mount a comeback!!I think this fight will be closer than most people seem to think!!:boxing:
Hes too tight.
Very true. Being tight for a whole fight tires you out. I have a similar problem, but he also has some other major flaws, and I like him a lot as a person. He trained down here for a long time at a gym my boy trains at. He does the following:
1) Leaves his punches out too long, especially the jab. This has been his biggest flaw since he turned pro and he still hasn't rectified it.
2) Pulls his head straight back. Especially when he begins to tire. It makes him such an easy target for guys who fight in a straight like like Pavlik. he boxed well in the second fight, but he couldn't outpoint a 1-2er.
I don't care what changes he makes in setting or who he talks to or whatever. Those have to be fixed and I don't think he can fix them if he hasn't yet. People down here were talking about seeing them in his camp before the Froch fight. It's just too long to have the same problems.
Taylor is technically one of the best boxers 160lbs upwards
If he can sort his stamina out, which is probably unlikely at this stage... he could be a real test for anyone in the tournament.
Fail, he is not technically sound. He appears to be, but he has fatal flaws that keep popping up all the time and he hasn't fixed since he was a pro.
I was thinking the same thing. I think JT is just fuked up mentally. He needs to learn to take a round or two off and just use his jab to control the fight for those rounds. I think he gets a little too trigger happy and is trying to knock someones head off.
Hes too tight.
I'd be intrigued as to how heavy these weights are, because heavy weights and bulking up a lot are not going to help his stamina problems.
So why bother. The guy needs to run and improve his engine.

Shady decisions and he has been knocked out twice by crude 1D fighters. Hopkins ruined him.
So that's a yes? Hopkins beat him the first time but, lost the second time. I think Spinks could've edged him but, IMHO nobody deserved the W that night. I think Winky could've edged him as well but, I'm not complainin about the Draw. Well both those crude fighters are champs at their respective weightclasses. This training can only help jermain, I really do think he's gonna win this one. He's desperate and he's willing to change his ways(pretty much his life) to get back to the top.
he's doing things to fix his stamina and help him in the later rounds, how will it not help? Athletes typically eat 6 light meals a day to give them more fuel before, after, and in between workouts. the leg strength and endurance training will help him in the long run.Still mad about the b-hop fights?

All that training will be useless when he tires in the 8th round and gets KTFO by an Abraham left hook.

What Taylor needs is some brains and stamina. If he can get that, then he will be a dominating Super MW in the future. But for right now, I think Abraham is going to beat him hands down.

Hanging around George Foreman can only help Jermain..
George Foreman is mentally solid. Is an entrepenuer on top of that. And was a beast in the ring. Im sure George is sharing mental toughness and mental stamina techniques .
