Now...this is in no way a comparison on how the actual fight will take place stylistically, but I'll let you know why I kind of mirror Tito vs Bernard to Cotto vs Pacquiao.
If memory serves you correct, Trinidad was being ushered in to being the next WW to move up to Middleweight and reign. He went through Joppy and the Bernard fight was set. Now, Bernard was the Middleweight champion for quite sometime up until he fought Trinidad, but unfortunately didn't receive the notoriety he deserved as he had been champion for close to 7 years. The majority of people anticipating this fight saw a good chance for Tito to land shots, use his aggression, and hurt Bernard down the stretch ignoring what Bernard brought to the ring himself...and boy were a lot of people awed.
Now, what won the fight for Bernard? His size? Punching Power? Ring generalship? Boxing ability? The answer is...all of the above. Now when I look at Cotto vs Pacquiao, I can't help but look at the similarities coming into this fight. Pacquiao is the favorite going in, he's the biggest star in Boxing right now, very exciting to watch, has a mega fight waiting for him in the Horizon...everything you could ask for as a fighter. With Cotto, he's been looked at as the workhorse of the WW division and has fought all comers win or lose. With the recent fight with Joshua Clottey, many observers have called him "Shot" or "Damaged Goods". But is Cotto really damaged goods...or has he simply been fighting the toughest fights the Division has to offer?
Whether its writers, sports announcers, fans (casual or not), This fight reminds me too much of how Tito vs Bernard was being promoted. The talks of what Tito was going to do after Bernard was being spoken without hesitation before the fight even happened. I see the exact same thing happening with Cotto vs Pacquiao. The assumption already is the Pac vs Floyd will be set for next year totally alienating the chance of Cotto beating Pacquiao. Bernard became a Full Fledged name after beating Tito the way he did, I have a very strong feeling the same will happen to Cotto come Nov 14th.
Just my 2 cents....
Cotto was suppose to knock Margarito out too. Look what happened lol. He ended up quitting.
What Cotto did was not called quit. What Ortiz did was quit. Do you know the difference?:bounce:
It kinda makes sense but Bernard is a much better boxer than Cotto. I think the going up in weight comparison makes sense though. When they come into the ring on fight night, everyone will see how much bigger Cotto is than Pac.
I agree with that the fight is going to be like the Tito/Bhop fight was. Remmember when they had the middleweight tournament, Joppy was seen as the biggest threat, bhop was considered to be "old"..lol..and he didnt look at that impressive againts Holmes. Tito was suppose to go on and fight Roy Jones jr. Almost everyone looked pass Bhop, Bhop was the underdog. Now in this fight people are already talking about Pac -vs- PBF. Granted the styles are different, but I think this might play out the same way. I really dont see Pac beating Cotto, Pac has not taken a solid shot from anyone this big, Hatton didnt land $hit and DLH was to slow to land anything significant. I want to see how Pac is going to deal with Cottos jab.
Good call. Circumstances are eerily similar. Cotto is gettin mad disrespected all over the place since Clottey. He's bein looked at as a walkover fight for a lil guy who's never tasted his kinda power. I think Cotto's gonna surprise a lotta people.

cotto should win (he's the bigger man with a 10+ lbs weight advantage), but cotto ain't no hopkins. cotto can't drink hopkins' piss... cotto can't even drink jmm's piss in terms of skills.
Meh, gets kind or tiring. I only criticized Cotto after the Clottey fight for a lackluster effort, when in fact I have supported Cotto for almost all of his fights (including the Mosley fight). Since then I have been labeled a hater for stating what can be seen as true.
im open minded i been here since june but i have always read the post for like a month before i sign up...and you did write things about cotto that were nice ill say that....after clottey its been like the man has done nothing in your eyes.....look at the cut man....it wasnt his best performance by far but he show heart and did what he had to....and got the W so he didnt look good i think that is actually whats got him this fight and a payday

good post :fing02:.......the similarities are there!!
B-hop won based mostly on Holmes being scared and not doing anything offensive....they were both holding the way I remember it. If i am wrong, let me know because I saw it once only and when it was live.....and we know how long ago that was.
You probably have it mistaken for another fight. Hopkins did almost no holding in that fight. Matter of fact Hopkins used to not even hold much if at all back then. It only got ugly after the 10th round where Holmes was in survival mode, and was ready to go.
There you go, that's why you a man Bully. Admitting you overlooked something in the OP.
If everyone on this site could to this there'd be so much less bullshit.

You're right, and you have a point. However, the mistake people made then was that Hopkins more of less ruled that division for years before Tito came up trying to take it from him.

I mentioned right when i started the thread that I don't see the fight stylistically playing out the same. Where I see the similarities is how many are looking at Pacquiao to beat Cotto (like many did with Tito over Bernard) and on to fight Mayweather before the fight even takes place. I expect it to be a much cloer fight, but with Cotto being overall too much for Pac to handle down the stretch.

Fukkin people on here.
He OPENED the post, saying that stylistically, he doesn't see the fight the same way. He's not comparing Cotto to Bernard or Pac to Tito.
He's just comparing the circumstances.
And it's perfectly valid.
By doing just enough to win several rounds, it was 1 punch grab 1 punch grab the whole fight.....he is very technical and great at what he does in addition beating good opponents but is extremely boring.....I just can't see how you and some of the other posters are such big fans of the guy.
Lmao. I don't think you watched the fight, or remember much about it. Hopkins did no holding. It was Holmes who was holding on for dear life when he was out on his feet numerous times.
i see where ur getting at
b hop ruled that division for nearly ten years and tito was a blown up welter weight and tito was on top of the world and people did'nt even know who b-hop was. but as far as styles tito was taylor made for b-hop counter punch and out box tito allday. cotto and pac r different cotto has better boxing skills and shown he can nuetralize speed and he's a good counter puncher and a good body puncher his money shot. pac has speed power and sum head movement he likes to jump in flurry and get out but he lack in defense.
Come on Man, Cotto fight absolutely nothing like Hopkins.
