Why don't we call the Floyd-Marquez fight what it really is?

And that would be a slightly above-average tuneup for Floyd. Everyone is extremely divided on this issue - Floyd haters say he is picking on an extremely smaller guy and is a coward, and Floyd huggers say Marquez is the best fighter out there after Floyd and it is an extremely difficult match. Both of these points are VERY wrong. First of all, Marquez is NOT en extremely smaller guy, he may not have fought above 135, but Floyd has never been at 150 in the ring. Floyd's fight night weight at 154 was nearly identical to Marquez 130-135 fight night weight. Also, Floyd has made a career out of fighting bigger opponents. He's in his 30s, has been inactive for two years, yet the haters want him to face ANOTHER bigger guy right off the bat? You are just so eager to see him lose that it pisses you off that he will win yet again. IMO, Marquez IS the best fighter after Floyd P4P, but to say he is a tough challenge for Floyd is crazy. Floyd is still stronger and bigger than Marquez, so the most difficult fight for him would've been a bigger opponent such as Cotto, or a more athletic opponent such as Pacquiao. Like I said before, you can't expect Floyd (or anyone who has been on a layoff) to take on the toughest challenge right after a long layoff. Look what happened to Winky Wright. Tuneups are customary in this sport. Diaz was a tuneup for Pacquiao coming up in weight. Jennings was a tuneup for Cotto after being KO'd. Even if Juan is the best fighter out there, he is a tuneup for Floyd because he is overmatched in every single aspect of boxing. The reason I say he is a more difficult than average tuneup is that he is indeed a world class fighter. What I believe Floyd is telling us by choosing this fight is that he intends to go after the tough opponents (Cotto, Pac), and to be better prepared for them after a layoff he is choosing a highly talented guy whom he is still expected to beat. People seem to forget, or ignore, that Floyd is coming off a layoff. He also has so many people that want him to lose, that if he took on the toughest fight, and looked bad in the process, he would get ripped to shreds and his aura of invincibility will be lost, as well as his drawing power. What's wrong with a great fighter taking on a still great but slightly less great fighter in his first fight after 2 years of inactivity? Why do the haters only rip Floyd for this, and why aren't the huggers honest about what this fight really is?

This will be a good fight. marquez has been held down and robbed for far too long, since hes had room to speak and box in mainsream hes done great things. Could be a tune up, could be an amazing match. Regardless I dont want to be the person who didn't see it live if it is a great fight, or even worse a Marquez upset ruined the next day by someone.

well as i see it this fight could go 2 ways, floyds skill takes over and makes JMM look like an amatuer which personally i believe wont happen, you cant count JMM out ever no matter who he's facing or JMM well go in there and beat floyd around. Once again highly unlikely becuase floyd is'nt stupid enough to get into a trading match with JMM. alot of people seem to be gettin somewhat childish in this thread, sure i can understand why some people dont like floyd becuase honestly neither do i, i hate the mans guts and im a big fan of marquez. But in a completely unbiased opinion i will say that Floyd has the bigger chance of winning considering he's a tad bit bigger but that has rarely anything to do with it, its his ring generalship and overall skill he brings into the ring. JMM on the otherhand cant be counted out as a tune up becuase JMM is far from a tune up, he in my opinion is one of the better opponents mayweather has faced even considering he is coming from a lower weightclass. Thats another thing, people taking this size advantage into such a big detail, SIZE DOES NOT MATTER! its been proven time and time again yet everyone is getting their panty's in a knot over this fight. If Marquez loses then oh well i guess floyd stays undefeated and Marquez lost to a very skilled fighter and if Marquez wins well then hidey ho! ide be happy, floyd would get a loss and JMM would have Floyd on his resume of defeated fighters. So everyone lets all just take a deep breath...and wait until september 19th when we'll get to see what will happen

Thought you said Marquez wasn't a tune up. On the real, Marquez is ring rust remover for Floyd, still should be a good one to watch. Can't wait to see 24/7, wish my boy Guzman would have hit the undercard but still good so far.

Great post Tito, didn't agree all the way but agreed with most. I'd like to also add that Marquez being Floyd's opponent, is so that Floyd could send a message because most believe JMM beat Pacquiao. This would spark some hype. Also Marquez is a big name, so that'll bring interest and he is the type of opponent Mayweather could come back with a "BANG" with. Mayweather isn't gonna step in there to bring us a boring performance, he is gonna step in there with the intent to destroy, leave us hardcore fans/ casuals fans saying "Damn, did you see that shit?!". You people gotta remember, Marquez being his next opponent was a good idea because 1. Alot of people had Marquez beating Pacquiao twice, this would spark bigger interest between Mayweather vs Pacquiao, if both can win their next fight. 2. Yes, Marquez is a division smaller, completely understandable but Mayweather is coming off a 2 year layoff and against Marquez who is rated 2nd on the P4P list. 3. While Marquez shouldn't be overlooked, Mayweather is all wrong for him, this isn't just someone Mayweather can beat, this is an opponent Mayweather could totally annihilate. I'm not just saying that because of Marquez's size, P4P I'd still call this a mismatch. Don't look for Mayweather to put on a clinic, he's gonna walk Marquez down, while being cautious of Marquez's right hand/ uppercut. Its gonna be a great fight. All great points, very true. this fight is actually gonna be a good fight. u people are too caught up in this weight shit...the weight is not that big of a deal! marquez usually relies more on his smarts anyway. i don't think it's gonna be a one sided fight either like many people here think, it's gonna be competitive i must say. don't make the mistake of counting marquez out either he definitely has the capability to pull an upset.if u fail to realize that it's gonna be a really good fight because these guys are 2 of the best tactical fighters out there, then i think u really don't know what a being a boxing fan is

It is a compliment to Floyd above anything else that people are giving Marquez absolutely no chance. Exactly, I've always said that Mayweather haters contradict themselves more than anyone else. They hold him to different standards and demand more of him, and by doing this they are subconsciously recognizing he is in a class of his own. I dont seem to recall Shane Mosley or Roberto Duran having a problem with moving from 135 to 147 to challenge the best welterweight in the sport. Yeah, no one gave boxing darlings SRL and ODLH any sh*t for fighting them, and they LOST. There is an even smaller size difference between Floyd and JMM than SRL-Duran or ODLH-Shane at the times they fought (and the apparently irrelevant fact that Floyd is coming off a 2-year layoff), yet Floyd is the coward? Makes no sense. I consider it an ok fight, I really do not see a bad thing about 2 great fighters going at it, one is a little bigger that happeans all the time though. Most concise and precise assessment of this fight. I don't even call it a tuneup, it's going to be an exhibition. A tuneup would be against a threat, somebody that will test you but, you're most surely gonna be able to come out on top. A tuneup fight for May would be like him vs: Collazo, Hlatschwhatever, Quintana, Urango, Torres, somebody along those lines would've served as a better tuneup. What are you smoking? JMM is a million times better than ALL those cats. If you mean that they would be better tuneups because of the size, well, they are all bigger than Floyd, yet none of their skills are remotely good enough to give Floyd the problems JMM could present to him.
