Fans of their favorite fighter's are making comments on here like "Pacquiao hype ends on Nov. 14th!" or "Floyd Mayweather's gonna retire again after Sept. 19th!" or "The end of Cotto is coming Nov.14th!"
All that shows is people's loyalty towards a certain fighter whether due to race or the way that fighter fights....or just plain on the fighter's nuts.
Too much emphasis is put on a "L" in my opinion in today's boxing. A loss is not the worst thing that can happen to a fighter..especially if that fighter is capable of coming back from a Loss and avenging it. All of the "greats" had at least a couple of Losses on their resume. That's what makes them a real champion. Not some un-defeated record, not the last year of their resume looking perfect, not being the most avioded fighter on earth. Losses are a great thing, from a certain point of view, and some fighters need it to prove their worth.
3 biggest examples today:
Floyd = 0 Losses....but in my opinion, he needs that 1 loss in order to see if he truly is what he says he is...THE BEST FIGHTER of our generation/ ever.
Pacquiao = 3 Losses...look how far he has come since those losses. Granted the 1st two were very early in his career and he was what...17 and 19 yrs old.....then the UD loss to Morales. Fast fwd to 2009...he is now the p4p king.
Cotto = 1 Loss....Came against a potentially loaded fighter, but hey....people are saying that he is damaged goods, he isn't the same fighter he was after the Margarito fight...blah blah blah....then why is he getting the chance to fight for his biggest payday against a smaller man? I'll tell you why...because he has the heart of a true champion. His fight against Clottey was proof of that.
Losses are not this "career ending" number that alot of people make it seem to be.....

most ppl are just cock riders ...if hatton beat floyd they jump from floyds 2 hattons dick ..if cotto beats pac its on 2 cottos dick ..its a shame
Sad to say that I have to agree. ALOT of "fans" are just riding the wave of their favorite fighter.
depends how they lose. not everybody recovers from a KO loss (jermain and jones)
Very true...that's what seperates the men from the boys...and the men from the CHAMPS.
I think it depends on how a fighter loses and how he reacts to it. In the past, fighters would lose and get better. Nowadays fighters lose and either quit, or don't really learn from it and with that, they don't attempt to fix their fight game.
But yeah, one of the purest signs of a good fighter is one who loses and then comes back that much better. The fighters I'm prone to watching, lol this has been a rare thing. But there's been a few guys I watch that took that first L, and have come back with better defense and/or offense.
That is one of the best statements to summarize this thread....:boxing:
i think, and always have... that the 0 is 0verrated!
when you lose, you learn more and champions bounce back even stronger... so if you havent lost, you havent learned much... at least enough to reach your MAX potential...
agreed agreed agreed

i mean look at bernard hopkins, lost his first fight but look at him now
losses are there for a reason. if a boxer losses they can choose to either learn from the loss and improve themselves or just not. :boxing:

I agree with TS.
Bernard Hopkins lost his first ever pro fight, and if he looked on these boards he might as well give up because he would never go on to achieve anything lmao
People on here don't seem to know the difference between losing an early fight and losing a fight when you know deep inside, you were the best you could have been and it just wasn't good enough.
For some people, that takes ALOT of you.

Mayweather doesn't have to come back from a loss to prove he's the best. He has to beat better opposition. If a loss makes him take on tougher fights because he's not worried about being undefeated, then yeah, the loss can help. But all other things being the same, opposition and all, rebounding from a loss in itself, is not as impressive as never losing in the first place.
What's funnier is Ortiz already had a loss. It was BS I hear, but still.
My opinion is that it all depends on the fight.
For Manny Pacquiao this means 7 weight divisions, if he losses, I don't know that he'll ever get that.
Honestly....it would be quite the accomplishment...BUT...there are those who would "Barry Bonds" Pacquiao's record. aka....* by his name in the record books......too bad that in the "belts" that he won....he did so legitimately and not against "weight-drained" or "past their prime" fighters....if he can get past Cotto...with the WBO belt on the line...history will be made...and we can say that the record is attached to a great "champion".
And in my opinion...if he did lose to Cotto...he would no doubt get another Welter title shot....
people forget how drastically a fighter can change with a few years more of experience.
hell, fighters can change drastically within months, for good or bad.
theres millions of things that matter in boxing, and one(or multiple) losses doesnt actually do anything to you if you have the talent.
ask Pipino Cuevas, Saoul Mamby and Freddie Pendleton(among others) if losses mean the end of a career.

co-sign homie! couldnt have said it better myself! gave you props!
I''m glad to see that there are still some level headed fans of the sport on here. Again...this thread is not a knock on ANY FIGHTER. It is my OPINION on the status of the "L" on a fighter's resume. As someone put earlier...."A true champion has always gone thru some form of adversity..."
And for those who say "another devatating loss for Cotto and that will be the end of him"...why...becuase he loss to a supposed loaded gloved fighter? Far as I can remember, Margarito couldn't KO Cotto. He proved all he needed in my eyes against Clottey...bad cut early in the fight, fought a "larger welterweight, with a granite chin" and had enough ringsmarts to stay away and outbox the Ghanian monster. Kudos and props to Cotto...a true champion.
Please keep this great discussion going people.......
yea..I see your point TS...when Ortiz lost we saw this as the case. People are NOT realistic on here, that the only explanation that I can give.

you referring to floyd? :lol1:
I was referring to Cotto and Pac fans going at it...Floyd fans going at it with Cotto/Pac fans...
Yea Floyd talks trash after his fights he is humble...
