HBO still has most of the big names in boxing, but for the first time in my cable-purchasing lifetime (@ 12 years) this is a tough call. Showtime has planned the Super Six tournament, and today announced the signing of Fedor to a multi-fight contract through Strikeforce. The Super Six will give them twelve excellent fights. HBO on the other hand have continued to pass on the best matches in favor of milking their own hand-picked prospects. In the past two years that list was very poorly chosen: Berto, Gamboa, Angulo, Arreola, etc.
Another factor working against HBO is the decline in their weekly entertainment. The days of Sopranos and CYE are long gone, and none of the recent shows match that level.
Good point here. I did a Gatti-Ward marathon the other night, but we shouldn't have to wait for guys to die before HBO decide to re-air some fights. Their catalogue goes back 25 years and includes early Tyson, Jones, DLH, etc. They could do a better series than ESPN Classic does, because they have a better list of fights in their arsenal.
and the thing about it is they can air them late at night when there really isnt crap going on. When you subscribe to Either HBO or Show, both have 4-5 channels or more apiece.
I'll be honest. I dont have enough money to subscribe in both so I voted "neither stick to streams". by the past years, HBO had great fights but I give it to Showtime this year.
One thing I wish HBO would do is replay more of the fights in their vaults. I mean with showtime if you got their premium package they show 2-3 older fights a month on showtime 2. I wish HBO did the same especially since they have HBO east and west and HBO 2. Maybe do 2-3 modern day older fights a month. I mean whats the point of having all these classic fights and just doing a live and replay a week later then locking them up. Lets us fight fans rewatch em from time to time even though they are a few years old.

Showtime definitely. Having said that, both have liabilities. Jim Gray is shit... and so is Max Kellerman.
It's a good thing you don't do the hiring for either network. Both have personalities that arer now staples for their respective networks.

i agree with 90% of your post.
Hbo is the way to go if names is what you care about and sho is the way to go if you want the most bang for your buck.
its a tough call as i have seen what both have to offer. on a regular basis i have just HBO but from time to time i've had SHO for a period of time.
Sho brings you MORE fights and have more boxing related content than HBO easily...and HBO puts much more fights on ppv than SHO ever has.
HBO has PPV's every month damn near. sometimes twice a month.
Personally i'd pick HBO (if i could only have one of the two channels.) because they do offer the biggest stars and usually the best fighters in the sport and i like seeing that unfold.
Sho is more bang for the buck but i couldnt imagine not beng able to see the top fighters in the sport on a regular basis.
and with sho you have the option to pay for fights you want to see for usually $25 if you're not a subscribed member of their programming.
so for me it works out better to buy HBO on a regular basis and pay for fights put on by sho when they come around for the $25. just my opinion.
I just ordered Showtime for the first time because HBO hasn't done much boxing at all. TS is right about the shows too, Showtime is pumping them out while HBO is remaining the same. I will mention that HBO has a new show called Hung that is pretty good.
I'd say it's about a tie overall, but I give Showtime the edge because of the boxing planned. Remember your subscription to HBO has nothing to do with the PPVs, outside of PPV boxing, what does HBO have in the next six months? Not much.
Yeah, I agree with you. I give the edge to Showtime right now

Showtime had Marquez Vasquez 1-3
Showtme has Dexter
Showtime has Penn & Teller
Showtime is by far the better network.

HBO has better production but the Showtime boxing is surpassing HBO fights in quality and excitement and the Showtime series are getting better each year: Nurse Jackie, The Tudors, United Sates of Tera, Weeds. I'd get Showtime if you want quality at a cheaper price than HBO. You can prolly get the 2 in a bundle for less than 25 per month
Assault in the Ring was worth the HBO buy, as well as the Boxing After Dark and World Championship Boxing.
HBO also has Real Sports with Bryant Gumble, True Blood, and Entourage.
I vote for HBO.

considering the the wide financial gap between the two (hbo dwarfs showtimes budget) showtime spends their money much more wisely than hbo. showtime buys great fights instead of buying fighters & hoping for great fights like hbo does.
but overall, movies, shows, & sports hbo is better. i answered dont be cheap & get both. if u have comcast & have hbo its only like 5 bucks extra for showtime.
I didn't realize it would be so cheap. My priorities are:
1. Sports package including GolTV, Fox Soccer, and NBA TV
2. High speed internet
3. HBO/Showtime
4. PPV
That runs close to a hundo every month without PPV, and $150 if you buy one per month. I can afford that, but the point of making a poll was to see what kind of distance Showtime has covered in public perception. Some people I'm sure have to make choices
JMM-Diaz is the best fight this year and that was on HBO. Either way is probably decent but you will miss some big fights for sure if you don't have HBO.
I still find HBO a superior network even with the current decline they are better and they have potential to get better. I mean Showtime has Dexter and what else.
If you just want fights you order HBO or Showtime on a day-by-day basis the price would be pro-rated meaning if HBO is $18 a month the cost per day would be $18/30 = $.60 a day. You just cancel the next day. Some cable companies might charge some type connection fee for around $4 or so but it still might be worth it if this is the case. Of course there's the possibly that not all cable companies offer this option but my last 2 have.
