Did anyone see "assault in the ring"? The HBO documentary on the Collins and Resto fight? Resto finally confesses that he knew that Panama Lewis messed with his gloves and wraps, he also says that Panama Lewis would mix some kind of pills in his water to give him energy.
They show a video clip of the Pryor vs Arguello fight(Panama Lewis was Pryors trainer)where Lewis asks for the bottled water, when the guy goes to hand it to him he clearly says "no not that one, the one that I mixed"(Arguello was stoped in the very next round).
It shows Resto at first saying he didnt know anything, then when a conversation with an undercover cop get dug up Resto confesses on camera. They show him confesing to Collins wife. Then he confesses to his own wife and kids. And finally he confronts Panama Lewis. Resto makes Lewis take off his shades and look him in the eyes to say he didn't tamper with the gloves, when Lewis does so Resto responds with "****You". Resto looked torn apart and truely sorry. He visits Collins grave and sat by it crying, saying "I shouldn't have worn the gloves man". It was a good watch, Panama Lewis seems like a grimey ass dude.
He's still training by the way. He trained Zab Judah for the Cotto fight, so much for a lifetime ban.
Truly I haven't seen the documentry but anyone who proceeds to fight with his hands wrapped in plaster and pads missing fromhis gloves should be banned for life and get what he deserves. I am glad he has no money and is brke he deserves it for what he did to Collins and his family. Even if Collins didn't die I would still fell the same way. The guy was a young promising kid fighting his way up 14-0 with 11 KO's and this bum because he was a BUM 2-8 feather fisted D BAG let his trainer load his wraps and remove padding from his gloves? Too boot it was the third time he allowed this? I have no sympathy for him what so ever.
As for Lewis well can you stop anyone from using him as a trainer? The answer is no. You can stop him from being in their corner while the fight is on but you can't stop someone from walking in his gym or paying him for his services. Just goes to show you what type of fighters out there are about. Anyone who woul duse him for anything involving boxing and allowing him to eat after what he did is just as bad as the man they are hiring. I mean look at it this way this guy is a part of an assault using plaster and removing padding in his fighters golves how can you trust him to teach you anything?....Lefty
where are the people that said pryor's wins against arguello were legit?? where the **** you at ****ing clowns. he beat my boy's ass by cheating of course. AA hit him with everything but a bat in one round and pryor would come out like a man possesed the next after drinking some of the "magic juice" that lewis was giving him. if pryor had another trainer prior to lewis then those fights might be legit but every fight with him should be questioned. i ****ing knew they ****ing cheated!!:damnit:
Panama and Resto both knew what was going on. For that, the game has never forgiven them and they were right to get a life time ban.
I know a lot of people are throwing what Marg was accused of in the same boat as this but I think there are worlds of differences.
For example, I have been involved in boxing for a long time, I have put on many gloves and put many gloves on other fighters. I can say there is no way you can put on a pair of gloves and not know there is something wrong with them. The weight difference alone will tell you something is wrong.
Even if at first you can't tell, as you punch someone repeatedly, you will know. Watching the footage of that fight, you could see the glove was "deflated" after just a few rounds.
In the case of Marg, it was something in the wraps that was the accusation. There is no way to tell if someone is wraping your hands if there is a substance there that is hardening them. I have seen hundreds of hands wraped and I can say people wrap hands so differently it amazing.
Some wraps are "soft" while other wraps feel like they have something inside of them and they are just wraped incredibly tight. I'm not saying Marg didn't know (for the record I think he did and have stated that many times here) I just think that if he really didn't know Capetillo was doing something to the wraps there is the reality of him not knowing until it was discovered like it was.
Watching that though, made me want to punch Resto, his family and Panama Lewis in the face. What fukin scumbags they are....

i thought it kinda sucked...it was just an hour and a half of beating a dead horse, panama and resto already were convicted and did time, and both know what was going on...we all knew this before we watched the movie...much of it looked staged and even scripted...the director made a big deal about how panama requested payment each time...you think resto wasn't paid? of course he was, and the acting job on his part was terrible, his true feelings on the matter were shown right after the incident when he told the media he did nothing wrong...he's thought about it every day? bullsh*t, he's just a broke ex (?) junkie who needed some cash and here's this guy who's willing to pay him money to "get to the bottom of this"...c'mon man, it was almost hard to watch how fake the whole thing seemed
I disagree with most what you said but each to his own.

Yeah Resto knew, but he finally came clean, I believed that he thinks about it everyday. Wheather its because he feels bad for what he did to Collins, or because of what he ended up doing to his life is another question. I think it might be both.

I just watched the documentary, all I can say is wow. I agree with fellow posters that I do not condone what resto did but he trully seemed sorry and actually I believe him because there is one big thing that I dunno if you guys noticed. Watch Resto at the beggining of the film, and then watch the Resto at the end he looked a lot more healthy not because he got rid of the pony tail .. but he look stronger, got some weight up, getting that burden of his chest did him good.
Panama Lewis is just plain scum, and I also thought resto was going to land a masive right hook on his head, and that would have been great.
As much I trully love boxing it is cases like this, that happens in a lot sports , makes me sick.... they make the athelites tools for others making profit with out the accountability, and the day they can not make money out of them ... well out on the streets.
But great film.
I saw the documentary as well, I felt bad for Resto, in my opinion he also could've been scared to say anything for his life, because he said there was betting involved and shady people couldve been involved also, he really did look like he just loved the sport, and i was atleast happy to see that Collins' widow and mother in law forgived him....
Yeah, I'd heard about that.
What was even more disappointing was the news that Margarito was in the locker room with him, still hanging around Capetillo.
I imagine he's under a similar spell as Resto was with Lewis.
Yeah, thats some trippy shit. Makes Evangelista and Miguel Cottos relationship seem healthy.
Yeah I agree. Boxers need to start taking a more active role in what goes on with the hand wraps and gloves. Because the trainers still go on training and making money. Do you guys know Capetillo is still training. He was in the corner as trainer for Segura in the second Canchilla world title fight in Mexico

I do wish Resto nothing but good in the future though.
I hope he can get his life sorted out, walk with his head held a little higher taking comfort in the fact that he at least had the balls to come clean, and maybe find a good fighter to train outside the ring like Lewis and make some money from it.
If Lewis is allowed to make a comfortable living doing it ; I see no reason why Resto shouldn't also be given the same opportunity.

Seemed to me that Collins wife was kind of blaming Collins father also. She said fights were offered to Collins Jr. but Collins Sr. wouldn't let him fight for fear of losing the lawsuits.
That was another interesting point to hear.
I know nothing of Collins' and his ability as a fighter other than the Resto fight ; it is the only Billy Collins fight I've ever seen.
But a 14-0 prospect with 11 knockouts is a hot commodity in this sport, and I'm sure Arum and the people at "Top Rank" had planned on milking for all he was worth.
Not to mention the fact that he was white.
Put those 2 things together and you're looking at a very profitable situation.
That's part of the reason why I sympathize with him a bit more over it.
But that's one enormous mistake to make.
As a fan of this sport, I know how high the risks are already to any man's health when he steps between the ropes.
Resto did it professionally so he was even more aware of it than I.
And to knowingly go ahead with it, like he did?
That's one tragic mistake.
I pass judgment on no man, and like I said ; I sympathize with Resto more now than I ever have before.
But as a fan who looks up to and respects these guys ; compounding the risk of injury is something I simply cannot forgive.
Well said.
That was total horseshit.
Talking about how he was going to help Resto once he got everything sorted out, got a good fighter, and could make money again.
Meanwhile the prick is decked out head to toe in gold and platinum necklaces, watches, rings, and other shit.
Yeah,it's ridicolous.
Resto prolly knows himself he ain't gonna get the call from Lewis. He just wanted out.
IMO he should go back to Puerto Rico or something and train.
yea collins sr seemed like a pretty shitty dude too.
But wasn't Collins told not to fight, because he could go blind?
I dunno, Lewis is a complete peice of shit. That's all there is too it, I don't understand why anyone would want to learn from that guy. Although I guess it's like he's not in their corner.
How are you gunna say some shit like give me the one I mixed and not remember theres cameras shooting everything.
It was a pretty good watch though. Can't believe Collins wouldn't go down though, crazy shit.
I do wish Resto nothing but good in the future though.
