Think about it...? He lost to Tito, Mosley (twice), May, Hopkins and Pac. All top competitors at the time! The only wins I give him is Quartey, Whitaker, and maybe Rivera and Chavez.
Sorry everyone else he fought where B class or less fighters.
I think the reason he got so far was cause of his somewhat so called good looks, and because he beat past there prime fighters. Hate if you want, but this guy is very overrated!!!! :boxing:
De La Hoya is somewhat difficult to rank due to the controversial nature of a number of his big fights as Whitaker, Quartey, Trinidad, and to a lesser extent, Mosley 2 (controversial decision, Mosley hadn't won a fight in 2 years, was on steroids, etc..)
However, he has a good number of solid victories in which he was dominant, over the likes of Genaro Hernandez, Rafael Ruelas, Miguel Angel Gonzalez, Jesse James Leija, Julio Cesar Chavez, Wilfredo Rivera, Javier Castillejo, and won a terrific battle with Fernando Vargas. You can argue about a lot of those guys being smaller or past their peak, but most of them were still formidable, and objectively speaking he has a terrific resume.
Personally I think he drew with Whitaker, lost to Quartey, beat Trinidad, and won the rematch with Balco Mosley. ATG is very subjective (what is it? Top 30? Top 50? Top 100?) so I don't hold really care if you say he is or isn't, but he's one of the top boxers of his era.
This is reasonable.

Co-sign!!!!!!
In the end, he will be in the top 100, at least. He's got some good wins over solid opponents and have been involved in some controversial fights.
However, ODLH was sort of responsible for the revival of boxing and introducing boxing to the non-hardcore fans with his boyish good looks and great personality, in a time when boxing was pulled off major broadcast networks. He is also an American hero for bringing them Olympic gold. A Mexican-American crossover boxing phenom who is now changing the way the sport is promoted.
His impact in the sport has been great and in the end, this will sway anyone more than anything he has ever done in the ring. The media loves ODLH and will regard him as an ATG.
Personally, I think he cracks the top 100.

''YOU GOT THE FIGHT WON,keep boxing''.As in we should win unless they robb us big time even if we give the last rounds.
Care to show us Alcazars judging credentials?
oh i agree with just about everything you said bro, but i just watched the fight, vargas was a machine and almost took dlh out. this being with the steroids, was the same fighter that fought ike.
I don't think I agree, bro. Vargas once had a rock solid chin. I mean, he could take a shot. He lost his punch resistance after the Tito fight and steroids can't bring that. Right after Oscar stopped him I specifically remember Larry Merchant saying, "Vargas had a six pack on his stomach but not on his chin" or something like that.
I bet money on Oscar against Tito and it ended up biting me on the ass. That's really not the most upsetting thing to me though. I had no idea that boxers were allowed to change outfits during the fight. You see, I had to go the bathroom after the 9th round was over and when I came back, to my surprise, Oscar was wearing this to start the 10th rd...

In his previous fight he had been rocked by his sparring partner. In the fight before that he was dropped hard and badly hurt by a faded Wilfredo Rivera. Vargas was at his best before he met Tito, when he was dominating Campas and warring with Quartey. He was simply never the same after that, steroids or not.

Yes I did, lots of people I knew were big Vargas fans. I think today's version of Cotto is more done from the Margarito fight than Vargas with Tito.
I respectfully disagree. Vargas never beat a top fighter in his division again. Cotto did that just a couple months ago. Yes, the beating Cotto took from Margarito was horrible but what happened to Vargas against Tito...ugh. Horrible reffing from Nady. That was too much to put on such a young fighter.
Vernon lost to Mayorga .
So? When he beat Mosley he was the obvious candidate to fight Oscar. Didn't happen.
Winky had a bad style for him, so in a way I do think he probably ducked Winky. Besides, Winky doesn't seem to exciting with the way he fights.
Really, I don't care. I never expected Oscar to fight Winky if he refused to fight Vargas when Vargas was on top.
chavez was way way past his prime, but you're wrong about vargas, he never looked or fought better in his career, remember vargas was on steroids and still got ktfo.

So that leaves out just about every ATG in the book that have beaten out of their prime great fighters. No one is an ATG by that logic.
Explain. What we're saying is that Chavez was well, well past his prime when he fought Oscar the first time. The second time he was finished.
The fight was important in any way you look at it, whether you like it or not.
We're talking legacy not how big the fight was.
Yes he was, he still came back and Knocked out 2 guys and win a belt. Mosley was the one that got the real damaged goods. Oscar had to fight Vargas cause he moved up to 154.
Did you even watch those two fights? Vargas was damaged goods. I repeat, he was dropped and out on his feet from Wilfredo Rivera. And then his sparring partner? Come on, bro. At that time Vargas wasn't the top fighter at 154 he just was gift-wrapped a title for beating his sparring partner.
That's too bad, in the end its the same. THEY NEVER FOUGHT.
You're right, they didn't. Like Oscar and Vernon - remember when he said he didn't want to fight him? How about Oscar and Winky? Not sure what your point is.
It shows the massive impact he had on the sport while fighting. No one else got asses in the seats and people in front of the TV like Oscar. Add to that all the accomplishments he has and that=ATG.
He beat Fernando Vargas, Arturo Gatti, Ike Quartey, was easily beating Trinidad until he ran like an idiot, Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker, Jesse James Leija, and fought everybody. Guys are considered all time greats for less.
Good post man! I agree he did fight almost everyone. :beerchug:
you win a fight round by round. just because you beat a person so bad for the first 6 rounds of the fight
doesnt mean that you won the fight. you still have to fight and win round in the other half
i agree to a point, it was about the ninth round he started to run, but still tito did'nt do shit. that was the best schooling i've seen in boxing without a ko. there's no way for tito to justify that, but he does. but you should fight evry damn round, thats what us mexicans do, and thats why alot of us dislike de la hoya. deep down i think he's a puzzy
This is what I am talking about! What the fvck does PPV sales/draws have to do with being an ATG!!???

I disagree completely.
He calcualted the rounds and listened to his stupid corner that told him to run the last few rounds.
That was still a major robbery. He won the fight clearly.

Yeah it was a big fight but we're talking legacy so it being a big fight isn't as important as the fact that Chavez was faded.
Second, Vargas wasn't a beast when Oscar fought him. Maybe he was when he fought Tito but that was the version Oscar refused to fight. I think you remember what happened to Vargas in the Tito. Then in his next fight remember he was almost KTFO by a washed up Wilfredo Rivera? Then remember in his next fight he was hurt by his sparring partner? So after all that, Oscar finally decides to fight him? A beast? Come on, man.
And Tito wanted to fight Quartey at welter. They had a deal in place for November 14th but Oscar swooped in with a better deal.
Now...am I lying?

Don't even bother! He is unable to comprehend! He will just keep saying...
5-6 belts = ATG
5-6 belts = ATG
5-6 belts = ATG
