yes there was a thread title before with the "141-147 is Welterweight"
explaining, if you didn't already know, that any weight in the above range = Welterweight
can't argue against that, it's a fact. as given the hypothetical example if WBC Junior Welterweight Champion Tim Bradley came in weighing 145 for a Jun. Welt. title defense
he would be 5lbs overweight, and since he's too heavy for Junior Welter, his weight (145) would be the next division up, which is Welterweight.
we get it, no problem there.
and as for the other smart ass that said "there's no 147 Division"
your absolutely right, you can weigh in at 146 for a welterweight title fight, and still fight for a Welterweight title ... the definition said up to 147 ..as long as a fighter isn't over 147, he should be good.
however I looked up 3 definitions of Welterweight (2 dictionary's and dictionary.com)
and every single one of those definitions the weight of 147 pounds is part of the Welterweight definition.
so while there might not be a specific "147 division" welterweight is defined as a division with a max weight of 147.
with that in mind, putting a catchweight of 145 in essence changes the definition of Welterweight, because instead of a max weight of 147, it's changed to the catchweight.
contracts aside, fighting at 145 still is Welterweight, since it's under 147
but making a catchweight bout where 145 is the max you can weigh, changes the original Welterweight definition which has a 147 pound limit.
i think most would rather see this fight at 147.
i think most though would agree it's a fair fight at 145.
no point arguing about it anymore. what we think don't matter.
it's what manny , miguel , roach , arum thinks that does.
i think it'll be for a belt btw. hbo and top rank will want to be able to bill this fight as a "championship fight" and "pacquiao challenges for another belt".
it'll be good promotion and could help draw some more casual fans.
miguel is not scared to put up the title. he just doesn't want to pay the wbo fees.
they'll work something out in the end and the belt will be on the line.
agreed with the bolded as most definitely will this fight be easier to promote as a title fight.
and i think it's been said already, but a title at Welter, and Manny picks up a record 7th title in a weight class (to go with his Flyweight, Super Bantamweight, Featherweight, Super Feather, Lightweight, and Jun Welter)
so there is that added incentive for Arum and company to try and make it for Cotto's WBO belt
we'll see if it plays out that way.
and as far as it being "fair" at 145 .. I just hope Cotto isn't weight drained
Or why don't you just call this a jr. WW with a catchweight they can go over 5 lbs over the limit? It's the same. they are just meeting halfway. EIther way, draining too much or putting on too much weight has an ill effect on boxers.

I don't think they're going to put the belt on the line simply because in the case that Cotto loses, there's a very good possibility that Pacquiao would relinquish the belt almost immediately. That leaves Bob Arum with just one star champion to promote instead of two. It's Arum's bargaining chip to use with Cotto (now that's he's signed him for another 2 years).
There are more people excited about this fight than not, and Im one who is dying to see this fight.
But you have to consider that the weight issue is without question in favor for Pacquiao. That's not to say he's some type of bitch or anything, but it's also ironic that he fought Oscar at 147 and not Cotto (who's one of the actual champs in the division).
Now, Im not one of those dude who goes around shitting on Pacquiao because he's also one of my favorite fighters. But I find it odd how many of the Pac crazies can't answer this question: Why was the fight made at a limit of 145lbs and not a genuine WW match up (with the limit being 147)? It shouldn't be a hard question to answer.
good point.
that's also what I want to know. im not gonna attach my opinion to it
that question, in green what's the answer?
not pigeon holing anyone into a response
but why is the fight at 145 and not 147?
your right pink it's not some crime against humanity or anything (the Cotto-Pac fight at 145)
and yes Cotto does have a paper belt
in the grand scheme of things the fight won't be made or broken on it being for the WBO title or not
the fight will still happen .. it'll just be for the title or not, and that's all there is too it, right?
**I just think it would suck if Manny's chance at history was ruined because of a catchweight
but the fight'll still happen, so onward we go.
im just posting this topic as a response to all the condescending comments I see about
"141-147 is welterweight" ... okay all that really does is state the obvious
or a "147 isn't a division" ... again I don't think anyone referred to 147 being equivalent to Welterweight ... after all Cotto weighed in @ 146 in his last fight uh oh, lol.
I mean even if you didn't read or agree with what I wrote
point blank it's factual .. and has a lot more validity then say some of the rude opinions that just mock other people, and insult on a persons intelligence.
**and Mike what's with the over sized picture?
is their anything in the definition of Welterweight that I left out?
im not giving my opinion on what the Welterweight division is
i just felt obligated to look it up myself in response to all the smart alec remarks.

me and u were havin this discussion yesterday in a thread...its a matter of time before its plagued with posts backed by no logic
oh yeah man what's up? I recall the thread+discussion and this topic kind of over laps
just waiting to be plagued with non logical posts, lol.
but what I find more annoying, and it's something recent I've come across in these forums (and it's happened on 2 occasions)
posters will comment you back and use something you didn't say, as an argument against you.
I mean I've heard the saying "having your own words used against you"
but getting bitched out for something you didn't say is just lame, lol.
Holyshit these cotto stans are a bunch of fukkin babies....STFU with the bitching and moaning and crying... Its gonna be a good fight...Cotto will come up on the shit end of the stick but still it will be a good fight. Not because Cotto is a bad fighter...Because Manny is way better...Not weight nor belt can deny that:grumble:
Who cares? I get what TS is sayin 4 sho, but this shit is old. The fight is on and no belt is at stake, so it's gravy I guess. We gonna be seein 15 threads on this per day til November I bet.

Someone else posted something about Cotto being scared to put his title on the line and what not.
But my thing is if you're defending a title, shouldn't the challenger be the one who has to abide by the demands of the weight class? In this case, why should Cotto defend his title where the limit if 147 and give the challenger a bone and make the weight lower to benefit the other fighter?
The TS couldn't seem to answer the question though (not the one on this post). I personally don't care about the catchweight because i think it's fair, but if I were Cotto I wouldn't let either the WBO or Pac's team try to punk me into defending the title on their terms. That's just insane.
Either way though, nobody really cares about any titles in this fight. This is just eye candy for all of us come Nov 14th.
