While I think the tourney in concept is wonderful for the sport of boxing and is exactly what the doctor ordered as the multiple sanctioning bodies and weight classes are killing the sport.
BUT
the round robin format that will potentially take 2 years is a bad format and could possibly lose peoples excitement and interest. It won't lose our interest because we are the diehard fans but the goal should be to captivate the fringe fans, and i think 2 years could lose them.
I would like to see them add 2 fighters and go single elimination. A quadruple header on the first night. Then, 2 months later, the semis followed by the finals in 2 months. The whole tourney would be done in 6 months and they would never lose the excitement.
I also have a huge problem with Jermain Taylor being in this tourney. He just lost to Froch.
Other fighters that could be considered for the 168 tournament, but I didn't feel they necessarily made the cut off of 16.
Karoly Balzsay 168
Edison Miranda 168

A 16 man tournament for 168 supremacy. Double elimination with a loser's bracket. Seeds will be drawn lottery style. I know this would take forever, but it would be great for boxing. Winner retires as the man because he has nothing more to prove. Winner also gets a 20 million dollar payday.
What do you guys think? Yeah it would never happen, but I had a little extra time.
You can't get it perfect like my post above. Now after saying that I think the people at Showtime who put this together did a terrific job. You will not here me complain about the most exciting thing to happen to boxing in a long time.
I agree that there's still Bika, Bute, Andrade and Balszay out there, maybe an 8 fighter single elimination, but i wouldn't go as quickly as 2 months, at least 4 or 5 would have them well rested and ready for the next fight, if i could i would take out Dirrel and Taylor, and add these four.
Maybe you'll get lucky and the showtime people will see your incredible original idea which none of them could have ever tought of and change the whole tournament to your exact specifications. As a matter of fact we should make you the CEO of the whole sport of boxing so you can show these people how boxing needs to be run. Because as we all know in the internet even a retard like yourself can show how brilliant he really is and that he is just pretending to be a loser to hide his true genius.
This is a step in the right direction if you don't see it as such then you are just retarded. This tournament is perfect and I thank the people at showtime for taking the extra steps to make this a tournament to be remembered.
Nice...resort to calling someone you will never meet in your life "retarded". Real classy!
You have a huge problem with reading comprehension don't you? I have said in this thread that I applaud Showtime for putting this together and I think it is great for the sport. Can you read? Are you lazy? There is a disconnect here.
This would be excellent in a perfect world.. but nowhere else, and certainly not on this Earth.
I hear what you are saying not in our lifetimes. I was just bored and needed something to do.
Yeah it woulda been nice if they coulda added Andrade and Green (assuming Bute don't want none) and then just gone straight into an elimation style tourney, with seeding and such
but this is too good an event to pick apart really. let's just be grateful and hope all goes according to plan

i dislike it, but for different reasons. I look at the lower end fighters in the tournament, not froch, abraham or kessler, but the rest, and im thinking 'you could end up with 4 losses on your record by the end of this.' It could destroy the careers of several of these fighters. imagine if Dirrell has a war with Froch in the first fight (not inconceivable, most of froch's fights seem to end up this way) gets beaten and then has to bounce straight into a fight with Taylor or Kessler, loses again. he's gone from undefeated to shot in 2 fights.
Plus the obvious problems of sanctioning bodies, the fact that fighters will be ignoring mandatorys and possibly dropping titles all over the place. Im not saying its not a good idea, i think it is, and im very much looking forward to watching it. Im just wondering if everyones thought through all the potential problems
This is a very good point. If someone got sparked bad, they are generally entitled to a bounceback/tune-up type bout..
What? No free german broardcast?
Thought Sauerland = free tv.
Yeah. I was also expecting ARD to broadcast from Germany. I don't know how they'll block the signal but according to this site it'll be PPV for Kessler's fights. The other preliminaries will be on 3puls.
