Joshua Clottey outclassed Cotto in every aspect in that fight. He was quicker, stronger and had more endurance. Cut or no cut, Cotto is not the same 12 round fighter he used to be. After the Mosley fight, he suddenly became human again. He doesnt have the stamina, legs or pop in his punches that he had say 2 or 3 years ago. He has the Hatton syndrome. To many rounds and wear and tear on his body. If Clottey was to fight Cotto again, and if Clottey actually showed a little heart, he could win 8 or 9 rounds, and maybe even TKO Cotto in the championship rounds. No way Cotto won that fight. It reminded me of the Chris John-Rocky Juaraz fight. John wins that fight by 3, 4 or even 5 rounds everytime I watch it.
gatti got outclassed by may, pavlik got outclassed by bhop, alfonso gomez got outclassed by cotto! those fights where fighters that were in too deep!! stop throwing the word around so loosely just makes u look that much less knowledgeable about boxing!!! All clottey did was make it close, thats it!!! in the end HE LOST!! and i've scored that fight maybe six different times again 114-113 everytime, too bad for clottey that he dropped on a jab but that was the difference.... another thing people like to bring up the fact that clottey landed more in the fight... while this is true u gotta understand that he threw those punches in maybe five rounds which is great he won those rounds but he was very inconsistent.
Cotto didn't look in good in the Clottey fight because Clottey makes you look bad.
he is a very tough opponent for anyone.
Cotto is still in his prime.
outclassing an opponent doesn't mean taking rounds off and not being active. You have to convincingly beat the champion to get a decision, and clottey himself knows he didn't do enough.
You don't take rounds off and let the champion corner you and hit you with unanswered shots. Plus, even with cotto's eye, he was still able to throw off clottey's pressure and land uppercuts.
Not every fighter is going to have spectacular showings on a consistent basis, but the true test is overcoming the odds and getting the win which cotto did. The only people complaining are just finding an excuse to downplay cotto's win, but "real" boxing fans know clottey's performance wasn't that of a championship nod.
excellent post from start to finish
:Blah: Yeah the fight with Clottey was tough but what most people don't mention are the close fights with Manny and Marquez where most people who know boxing would say MArquez dominated pacquiao in both fights.
Either way both Freddy and Manny want Cotto weight drained just like ODLH was they should just call it a Jr welterweight fight
I dont think pacman should be called Henry Armstrong because he hasnt fought anybody above 147 or at least an elite fighter for me hes still a lightweight most lightweights like juan diaz go up to 145-147 so if cotto comes in at 160 the night of the fight he will definitely beat pacquiaos ass if not he will be in trouble manny wont be no more than 148 maybe even 149, but if neither guy is weight drained expect to see alot of right hands from cotto and alot left hooks from the southpaw stance
usually i just read the shit on here and crack up.... never say too much cuz i noticed peoples feelings get hurt here quick.. now b4 all the "nuthhugger" comment start lets get one thing absolutely CLEAR! I'm a fan af the game not a certain boxer, I LOVE A GOOD FIGHT PERIOD! but all these cotto on the way out pieces and cotto is overrated and pacman gonna destroy cotto are really distorted... I think i speak for alot of folks when i say...... U MOFOS R TRULY IN FOR A RUDE AWAKENING!!!! as roy once said " ya'll musta forgot!"
I do believe manny will get hit which is why I specifically stated that I'm hoping that manny could take cotto's punches.
I agree Diaz got the right game plan (I believe this is also the reason why he lasted more than dlh and hat) but the speed of pacquiao ruffled him that he got careless as the rounds go by. Cotto could use it but I'm thinking that his stamina is still a huge ? for me. In the clottey fight, I don't know why he suddenly backpedaled ( I've thought of a possibility of stamina issues, clottey's power or just a PLAN C for Cotto's choice ).
As for pac, in the hatton fight, you can see that the disparity in speed allows pac to sneak in a punch before hatton lands thus minimizing the power of hatton's punch. I saw this also in the DLH and DIAZ fight. If he can use this on cotto, he will minimize the advantage of cotto in power. In cotto's defense however, he had always figured out how to win against a speedy fighter. His jab is indeed the way to neutralize pac's speed. Plus, he is often leading with his stronger hand so I clottey-like KD of pac is not far fetched.
Other than stamina ( cotto can fix that ), I see a huge advantage for pac in the corner. Roach against ???. Will Cotto get a trainer to have a good game plan on pac? Hopefully, he could. 2 heads are better than one although I've never questioned the ring intelligence of cotto as I think he is basically self-trained.
My assessment on who will win may change but will support pac nonetheless as a fellow Filipino. Good luck to you also if the fight ever gets made.
This was a fvcking great post! I agree 100% with everything said.

Or are you sooooo against cotto that you cannot analyze the fight in a intelligent way? Cotto was headbutted in 2nd round and fought a very good, diffucult fighter and took his best shots and with that bad cut CLOTTEY still could not knock him down.
Clottey beats ANY pacman opponent. IF....IF...IF IF i was 7 inches taller i'd probably be playing basketball....IF i was rich i'd have a house in beverly hills....IF Clottey did his job he would've won. He does not have the pop in his punches of 2-3 yrs ago because he is fighting BETTER fighters and avoids NOONE. While other fighters are cherry picking their fights and looking good, cotto is fighting the top in the welterweight division. Please be a boxing fan and not a hater...please
In no way, shape or form did Clottey outclass Cotto in that fight. Cotto showed that he can beat a difficult, quality opponent even with one eye. Watch the fight again and Cotto really impresses compared to watching it first time round. Having said that, as much as I hate to say it, Pacquiao will beat him.
here we go again....
i'm gonna say this just this time: cotto didn't won the fight...clottey lose the fight because he was unable to beat a guy with only one eye and stamina problems in the late rds.
so everybody move on. cotto showed more heart and will than clottey in that fight and he was boxing.
he was getting hit? YES
he was running? NO
walking to a guy w/o throwing punches will not win a fight
can someone post a pic of the cut?? it was a nasty cut and cotto was bleeding since rd 2.
what do u think will happen to you bleeding, OVER YOUR EYE, and taking punches for 10 rds??
it was a hard fight for cotto but he did what it takes to win a fight. clottey didn't
no one else laughing but you!! :pat:
WHO CARES ABOUT ANYONE ELSE, LIVE YOUR LIFE AND NOT OTHERS!
I was laughing at you because you come in cursing a people and I find that funny. I mean it seems that you had PMS! You should follow your man's example and be humble about things. Walang hiya ikaw?

Very good post and assesment of the fight! It is a plus for pac to have a good corner and that will definitely help if he gets into some trouble. Also on pacs favor and why it would not suprise me if he were to defeat cotto is that his power is understimated. When manny gets into a rythim due to his speed and power fighters have a very hard time getting back into balance, so if mannys power can indeed keep cotto of balance he could get a tko.
The match has cheeslike qualites about it. I agree on cotto's minues which is mostly his stamina. I think he does give up rounds in order to save stamina for later if he is leading the fight but if he falls behind in this one can he afford to do that?
It will be fun and good for the sport to watch these guys. Right on, or your assesment might be cemented, just like when I bet that pac would beat DLH, i was a little bit worried due to DLH history but I like you was supporting him nonetheless. But once the fight started I knew DLH was not going anywhere.
I think we should apply for merchants and stewards job at ringside!!
On the clotty fight, I was wondering that myself but after the fight I thought about it and I think he was respecting clottys power. Cotto had limited vision on his right eye he could not stay in trading with clotty, so he had to step back. And also might have been struggling with stamina issues at times.

I agree completely.......but Cotto was never good at goin 12 strong......he always has had those stamina issues.
I have cotto, because although some people think that manny is not going to get hit he is going to get hit. I am banking on cotto's ability to control the fight with the jab and his power to put mann down. KO or TKO. I say if cotto can't get it done in 10 and goes to the cards manny might win by points.
If you watch the diaz pac fight, diaz had the right game plan but he did not have enough power and is too much of a stand up fighter. Since diaz did not have enough power manny was able to play his own game and beat diaz. I don't think he will with cotto. cotto is way more experienced more battle tested, skilled and rugged than any jrw or ww manny has faced.
RE watch that fight of diaz and pac..!!! trust me..

I agree with you... Cotto is doing what he needs to do......... and anyone knows he fought with a great opponent .. Clottey is not easy..
Props to Cotto and maybe next time if they have a rematch and there are no accidents we'll see who is who....
Cotto haters out there can not accept he won this fight just wait until he beats Gayweather

hey DUMB ASS, ever thought it could be because he's now fighting bigger stronger more powerful men? do you expect him to look the same vs joshua clottey who's coming in the ring at 164 on fight night as he looked when he fought Mohhammed abdullev?
you boxingsceners know SHIT about boxing
I'm a fan of both too. Who you got? I got pac UD or late TKO. I'm banking on pac's stamina and hopefully he could take cotto's punches.
