After World War 2 Schmeling fought five times and though he never made the top 10, he made enough money to purchase the Coca-Cola dealership. He was known as one of the most generous philanthropists in Germany. Schmeling treasured camaraderie and friendship and somehow, each of his ring opponents became his friend. He regularly and quietly gave the down-and-out Joe Louis gifts of money, and the friendship continued after death: Schmeling paid for the funeral.
Spread the world and tell your friends because I'm getting annoyed with all this racial bullshit of late. Vitali names his son Max and some idiot with a racial agenda ties the name to this guy without even knowing what the **** he's talking about.
Seriously...I love this sport but when I see people discrediting boxers in today's modern world to fit their own personal racial agendas I struggle to find the love for the sport sometimes and feel tempted to walk away. These people just ruin it for me.
I never suggested Schmeling was racist, the original QUESTION was 'is Vitali a racist?' for admittidely naming his son after someone who was around and a part of the Nazi era.
I admit i made a mistake saying he was part of the Hitler Youth as he wasn't, but in reply to your thread sir, i never said Max was racist.
AND it was only a question. Maybe i got my facts wrong, i was going by what i read on Wikipedia.
There is your mistake.

Schmeling has to be one of the nicest individual from the early 40s in boxing, But because of a meeting with Hitler prior to the Louis rematch some people seem to want to tarnish his name, Like someone said above if hitler wanted to see you in those days then am sure you wouldnt say NO because he would probably kill all your relative.
Schmeling had a Jewish manager and saved the lives of a lot of Jews one night as well.
I've also heard that he admitted later in life that he was happy he didnt beat Louis twice, because it would have added so much more fuel to the fires of racial division in Germany.
He would have been a national legend for beating the dark-skinned Joe Louis twice.
I did a similar post on Boxing History recently.. I picked him as 1 of the finest role models in boxing.. What the poster said is true, & I think God agreed with him, cos dear old Max made a few bob & lived to the ripe old age of 99!
He definitely hated the Nazis but at the same time he also felt flattered by all the adolation he got. Personally, he also was from a rather modest background and primarily was focused on the progress of his career. I guess it is somewhat understandable in retrospect.....

he was just used as propaganda by the nazi's after he beat louis, than disowned when beat by louis.and he and louis became good friends i believe.
I heard he had a personal meeting with hitler before his first bout with louis. That doesn't make him a racist, if hitler wanted to see you and you were in his country, if you didn't go, im sure you're entire family would get shot.
But it wasn't his conversation with hitler that propelled him to fight so hard against louis.
It was O'Rourke, his trainer, dying in the dressing room before their first fight.

co-sign..its only a few idiots that spread this hatred. Racial hatred and ignorancy is built on misconceptions and stereotypes. Whenever you meet and interact with different people and become more worldly, you realize how ignorant racism really is. Schmelling as well as other athletes such as vitali are well traveled a have interacted with different ethnicities to the point its foolish to imply they are racist.
They internet BTW is full of b!tch @ss people who sit in their rooms all day and live life behind a computer screen. I would suggest you take everything you read on the internent from posters with a grain of salt.
i gotta say the racial thing is getting out of hand. Because the actions of some ignorant people, this site could become something else that is not or it shouldn't be.:nono:
