They're both overrated and underrated today. The reason the are underrated? Because most fans today don't understand the circumstances of the era's they fought in and don't know shit about most of their respective opponents. The reason they get overrated? Blind hero worship and an uncanny ability to be unobjective.
very true on you comment.
floyd patterson and sonny liston
patterson hit hard, hut had a very bad chin,
and sonny only great win is a ko of patterson.
I disagree with both of these. Liston thoroughly cleaned out the heavyweight division while waiting for his shot in the late 50's early 60's.
Patterson was a GREAT fighter, he was just to small to be a great heavyweight. If he'd stayed at 175 he may have gone down in history as the weights greatest fighter.
Rocky Marciano and Wack Dempsey.
reasons????

co-sign with that patterson and liston were nothing special...
jack dempsey/johnson era cant really be considered over rated because the sport has evolved so much since then. No one can say those guys would make it in these days
Sugar Ray Lenarod.
He picked his oppenets on the right time. He is one of the smartest fighters due to that.
Like the rematch against Duran, he admited he wanted rematch against Duran because he knew his habit and the culture "Beyond Glory: Roberto Duran." quote from him.
fighting Hearns
Hagler fight
I disagree completely.
Patterson has wins over Archie Moore, Tommy Jackson, 2 over Johanesson, Eddie Machen, Chuvalo, Bonavena and drew with Quarry.
If anything, hes underrated.
Liston's wins over Cleveland Williams, Folley, Machen, and Patterson are damn good too.
you have to remember, theres only 1 title at this time. its harder to find 'former champions' to beat.
shit i 4got about patterson's carrer, after he lost the title, your right bro

I don't think he's overrated but Larry Holmes rates himself too highly.
He said Ali was overrated...he's lost his mind...
lol at holmes overrating himself
Rocky Marciano and Wack Dempsey.
co sign, Johnson needs to be there to..if anyone thinks he can beat Ali, Holyfield, Lewis, Tyson..they got some issues going on there
Two Ton Tony Galento
Dominic Anthony Galento (March 12, 1910—July 22, 1979) was an Italian American heavyweight boxer. Nicknamed "Two Ton" for his reasoning to his manager for being nearly late to one of his fights: "I had two tons of ice to deliver on my way here". Galento was one of the most colorful fighters in the history of the sport. He wrestled an octopus, and boxed a kangaroo as publicity stunts for his fights. He also attempted to make some money by boxing a 550 lb. (250 kg) bear, as a stage attraction.
Galento was a "no holds barred" brawler, with a wicked left hook, who never let such niceties as the ring rules, or sportsmanship, interfere with his goal to knock out the other fighter. During his prime years as a boxer, Galento owned and operated a bar named "The Nut Club" in Orange, New
Jersey. He was reputed to do his roadwork (training) after he closed the bar at 2:00 a.m.. When asked why he trained at night, Galento replied, "Cuz I fight at night."
Galento, who claimed to be 5'9 (177 cm) tall, liked to weigh in at about 235 lb (107 kg) for his matches. He achieved this level of fitness by eating whatever, whenever he wanted. A typical meal for Galento consisted of six chickens, a side of spaghetti, all washed down with a half gallon of red wine, or beer, or both at one sitting. When he did go to training camp, he foiled his trainers attempts to modify his diet and terrorized his sparring partners by eating their meals in addition to his.
He was reputed to train on beer, and allegedly ate 52 hotdogs on a bet before facing heavyweight Arthur DeKuh. Galento was supposedly so bloated before the fight that the waist line of his trunks had to be slit for him to fit into them. Galento claimed that he was sluggish from the effects of eating all those hot dogs, and that he could not move for three rounds. Nevertheless, Galento knocked out the 6'3" (192 cm) DeKuh with one punch, a left hook, in the fourth round.
reasons???????
most well known win=Willard, where he used plaster.
what other wins does he have? Firpo, who got beat by an old Harry Wills
Sharkey, where he was behind on the scorecards and only won through a lowblow/hit on the break combo.
only defended the HW title successfully 4 times over about 7 years, then lost it to Tunney one sidedly
any other wins you throw out there are mediocre.
