Why do boxing fans put down a fighter when he loses? Victor Ortiz is part of a long line of fighters who get put down and called such things as overrated, a bum, a hypejob because he lost. Why?
The man had just fought tooth and nail against one of the top junior welterweights in the world, had him hurt and down before succumbing. The guy is just 22 years old, he has his future in front of him, 1 loss doesn't mean he's a bad fighter, especially since that defeat came at the hands of a guy who'd beat the majority of fighters at 140.
Could he have fought a better fight? Sure. Could he have finished the fight in a manner more befitting a warrior? Sure. But we aren't in his shoes, we weren't the ones taking big shots for 5 rounds from a big puncher, we weren't the ones getting cut above one eye and had one eye closing up. We really can't say what we'd do in his position because most of us haven't been there.
Instead of just enjoying the fight (which was an excellent one) and giving both fighters their props, we have to put down at least one of the fighters. It's a shame that some so called boxing fans do this after almost each and every fight to almost each and every fighter.
Anyways, rant over.

Great thread, this should be a sticky :beerchug:
140 is loaded with fighters MUCH better than Maidana.
He will not be a champion...if he does..it will be a WBO of NABF title.
Ortiz is just another Bojado.
Who hits harder than Maidana at 140?

Stylewise, Maidana may not have the most attractive game, and yes there are better boxers then him at 140, but he would be a nightmare for any top JWW, and i bet he does win a world title in his career.
You hate on a certain fighter around here ALL THE TIME.
Why all the compassion now?
I do? Really?
Trust me, this isn't about Ortiz, Ortiz was just the most recent example, it's been happening for a long time.
What is up with this going out like a warrior stuff? Let me get this straight. We want him to fight until he can no longer defend himself or isn't responsive? Thus taking additional damage because he's too buzzed to see what's coming at him. Yeah that sounds like a good plan.
But as long as he went out like a warrior I guess.
Either way there would have been complaints about Ortiz. If he went out getting brutally knocked out you'd all still be saying he's a bum and got exposed. That wasn't going to change.
Either way he would have still taken a lot of shit from a lot of you guys.
I agree with you. I totally understand his decision to call the fight when he did and I found it really refreshing to hear him say as much in the post fight interview.

I agree coming on here is buzz kill at times after a great fight. We just saw two guys go at it in an action packed fight. Yet I see nothing but complaints on how Ortiz is a quitter etc. It's like we can't even enjoy the moment of a spectacular fight. It's not like he fought like a coward he was mixing it up in the line of fire the whole fight.
It's just when his eye closed, it was enough for him to end it. Why kill him for it?
Those who are bashing Ortiz are actually people who believed in the hype that Golden Boy did for the kid. That is why they could not help but criticize the boy...Even Ortiz himself must have believed what Golden Boy hyped him to be...
Golden Boy is just so desperate to promote someone who could be the next Oscar de la Hoya to the point that Ortiz must have gotten this "hype thing" into his head, distracting him in his preparations!
Ortiz is a brawler-puncher, he needs to develop more his defense...But he is good. He is still young. He can still be a world champion...but he needs to learn some lessons at this point in his career. I hope Golden Boy drop him and Top Rank takes him. Golden Boy is just desperate now for fighters who could earn for them more money that's why they hopelessly hype upcoming boxers like Ortiz.:)
Maybe, you make a good point but that's not everyone, I've seen people who weren't on his bandwagon calling him overhyped and exposed as a bum.
You're right though, HBO and GBP hyped him up too much.
Top Rank seem to be much better at developing fighters than GBP, they have a magnificent track record.
how many guys can test him though?
even if he is mentally weak......it won't show up except in tough pressure fights.
he still can go far.
just keep him away from argentinians , colombians and nicaraguans. lol
Well fighters will know how to test him now, pressure works against him, that's when he starts thinking about his situation and that's probably how most of his opponents will fight him from here on in, no matter where they're from.
He definitely has the skills to go far.
Well, no-one likes getting hit to be honest...Not getting hit is the first thing up and coming boxers need to work on then offense..
Well of course no one likes getting hit, but in boxing you have to deal with getting hurt every now and then...especially with Ortiz's style. His attitude after the fight was the total opposite you would expect from a young, talented, hungry fighter. He should have said, I'm going to go back to the drawing board, improve from the loss, and come back stronger. Instead he showed all the signs of a boxer who's heart isn't in it anymore and made out he was going to quit.
Ortiz quiting was really bad for boxing.
I don't like the fact that he quit, but pisssing on dumb mexican nuthugers is still fun.
Still he shouldn't have quit.
Ortiz gave it his all, and came off second best. No shame in that. However unless there is drastic change in his attitude he isn't going to make it at the top. There are better fighters out there than the crude but big hitting Maidana. I don't think he likes getting hit, and that's a big problem.

it was a great fight.
ortiz fought the wrong fight.
if he gets his head on straight , he can still be the top 10 p4p fighter i always thought he could be.
plus he was headlining a hbo fight at staples center in his 1st championship fight. that could've effected him.
people harp on the he quit thing too much. a lot of greats have.
Definitely, he fought a pretty stupid fight after 2 rounds and got way too knockout crazy and I agree, he has the skills to go on and do big things.
As you said, he seems to not be all there mentally though and I wonder how he'll react to getting tested again because he will get tested again sooner or later.
90% of the posters on here are boxing retards, You need to understand how they see things with their own little boxing brain..Even though i havent seen the fight i dont need to start dissing a fighter who knows in his heart that he has had enough for the night.
I really should have expected this reaction, it just got to me this time I guess. Anyways, you should really watch the fight, it was a great one.

It's NSB.....
On the other hand a fighter also gets to much praise when defeating mediocre opponents by way of brutal KO.
It works both ways.
True, true. But giving a fighter too much credit is better than completely dissing a fighter after a loss to me. It's like kicking a guy when he's down. Too much credit is not a great thing either.
