Considering margarito got busted against mosley and most people think his hands where plastured against cotto as well, if cotto wins convincingly against clotty does he redeem his status he had before he the margs fight. Does it mean the loss will be ingnored by most boxing experts and fans and a match up against pacman or mayweather generate as much excitement if he was undefeated.
I have to go with the majority vote and say no that this win does not redeem him of the defeat he took against Margarito. However it does cement his spot atop the WW divison and a potential Clash with Mosely should then be in order. This is the fight I hope happens assuming he gets by Clottey.
As far as redemption goes: Miguel Cotto needs to face Margarito a second time in order to prove to himself that he is the better fighter. Fighting someone else or beating a guy like Clottey just isn't going to cut it.
I think we put too much emphasis on the "0" in our boxers records. I'd rather have a boxer who has taken on the challenges and have losses then have someone with and "0" that has not faced the top opposition available. I hate to say this but this is why UFC fans love their guys and if you look at their fighters not many are undefeated...even Spider Silva is not undefeated, yet he is their p4p man. Not too many fighters in history are undefeated...hell the #1 ATG or GOAT is Ali and he has several losses, after Ali comes Robinson and he too has several losses yet them 2 are the baddest men on the planet what does that say for great boxers? To me it states that you don't have to be undefeated to be considered the best.
So does this fight redeem Cotto...not really but then again Cotto is not defined by the Margarito loss but by his wins over top competition and by facing the fiercest fighters available in his division. Only one he hasn't faced is Williams out of the guys willing to fight him...can't say much for Floyd nor Pacquiao cause it seems that they don't want to tango with Cotto. Though I cannot say that they won't face him either...they are all still active and not retired and as fans we should all be crossing our fingers that these fights come about because it would be a priveledge to see all these fights. Hopefully these fighters won't worry about their records and just get it on.
the question is do u still view him the same after his loss to margs compared to being undefeated. and if not, then will your perception change back if he beats clotty convincingly.
It will somewhat. But that doesn't mean he's gonna get a pass from me if he goes back to fighting guys like Michael Jennings and Alfonzo Gomez. Cotto should have more control over who he fights after his contract will be up with Arum. And he needs to use that freedom to give fans the right fights like he is doing against Clottey. Even if Cotto wins this fight, I still want to see him rematch Shane Mosley in Vegas. I know Cotto is a bigger draw at the gate than Shane is, but he needs to return the favor of fighting outside of his comfort zone. That first fight was not conclusive at all to me. And I think this rematch will happen because Shane will wise up and realize that Pacquiao isn't gonna fight him at all. And Cotto knows that Arum hasn't really looked out for his best interests when it comes to getting him recognition of being in the driver's seat. Sure, Arum has probably paid Cotto well. After all, Cotto got 3 mill to fight Jennings, but Arum has kept him away from the big fights like the one with Mayweather and even DLH somewhat. I have my reservations about whether DLH would have fought him if he beat Margarito. I hope Cotto wants to be the recognized champ of the division and not leave any loose ends. And I hope Shane does too.
Redeem himself from what? All these fools who thinks the loss makes him any less of a fighter are fanboys plain and simple and their opinions mean nothing to anyone who knows anything about boxing. Real fighters lose because they push themselves and test themselves against the best.
Do you think people will view him the same way they did before his loss to margarito or that 1 next to lossed has effected his status as a boxer.
Having a 0 next to lossed seems to make boxers look invincible and more popular look at mayweather.
Look at Cotto's resume,he fought everyone and there momma, great fighters duck no one fight everyone and if they lose, get up and continue to throw down with the best,Cotto doesnt need redemption, where would boxing be without fighters like him?!
Cotto don't need to redeem himself. Dude got KTFO, but now he's back and he's the #2 WW in the world. Beatin Clottey ain't redemption, just a statement that he's ready to face SSM in a rematch.

if cotto wants to avenge his loss he has to fight margo.
cotto can get his status as the #1 WW back if he beats mosley. actually the winner of cotto/mosley II is the WW champ.
i don't think cotto needs redemption, he fought like a warrior against marg, and this is comming from a mexican/american. i was rooting for marg, and was happy he blew cotto out. but afterwards i lost all respect for marg. cotto deserves his "0" back. much respect to cotto, blast clotty
