.. hinder his popularity in the US? He was obviously a very good boxer, he had the skills and a decent chin. Some great wins (Lacy, Kessler, Eubank) Some okay wins and some plain terrible opposition.
Was it has lack of KO power that hindered his popularity? I mean I rewatched the Lacy and Kessler fights yesterday and he had Lacy at least 3 times but just couldn't finish him. Manfredo even though he was stopped wasn't really in too much trouble when it comes to a KO he just couldn't block Joe's pucnhes and wasn't returning. I don't think he would ever be able to finish Kessler damaged hands or not. Hopkins never really looked in that much trouble he just outpointed him and RJJ was there for the taking and he didn't finish him.
What do you think guys?
Mayweather is more popular in the UK than DLH?
I'd say so. He has built a solid fanbase since he KTFO Hatton - I suppose it's the if you can't beat him, join him mentality. He is known to the casual fan whereas DLH isn't.
I like Calzaghe, and I became a fan of his after he beat the brakes of Lacy ( chose Calzaghe to win) but when you disect it, his resume is in all honesty dismal. Lacy and Kessler....like who the hell have they beaten, and why haven't they accomplished anything since. The Hopkins fight was controversial and could have gone either way, and Hopkins was fighting with a thyroid condition and Joe looked horrendous, and what made it worse was him flat out rejecting giving a rematch to the man who gave him his shining opportunity. I wont even talk about Roy Jones who was knocked out by Glenn Johnson four years ago.
who else could he have fought?
What you have to realize is early in most A grade fighters careers they all have power because they fight scrubs, tomato cans and washed up veterans who either have no chin, or have eroded to an extent that they have no chin left. This is why fighters like Winky Wright have so many KO's early on in thier career, and cant seem to seriously hurt any A class opponents.
This is SPOT SHIT on. And so was your previous post.

Exactly. Calzaghe's power has always been decent to solid - he never had one-punch KO power, injuries or not. Most top fighters knock out the majority of the first 20 or so opponents they face. Once they step up, the KO percentage goes down. Nice post.
early in his career he had solid power but his hands have broken so many times he is very careful and had 2 adapt his style to that,he still has decent pop.i dont see why people call him just a slapper,he must be a bit more than that,or surely the future hall of famers and undefeated young champions would have beat him wouldnt they?

if he would have fought good competition, in america, against american opponents, i wouldnt have had a problem with him. it really got on my nerves when he beats up on old rjj, he says hes the legend killer. that really bugged me cuz true fans know roy kills him in their primes. he was a good skilled boxer.
joe calzaghe DID have one punch K.O power early in his career before his hand problems and credit to him for adapting and not just quiting the sport full stop because of his brittle hands which alot of boxers would. and the fact that he ramained undefeated is a testimant to what a great boxer joe was
How many people did he flatten with one punch early in his career and quality of fighter were they?
I can't speak for others but for me, yes, his lack of one punch power was one part of why I was never really a fan of his. He is talented, but it's not a style of fighting I enjoy.

pbf is way more well known in england then dlh. Theres no comparison. Also floyd isnt hated imo, it seems that most americans hate him but the brits quite like him.I know i do.
BS...dlh is more popular than floyd anywhere in the world.......
no one cares about De La Hoya over here. Mayweather/Pacquiao are the two biggest boxing stars over here discounting our own boxers
from my experience Mayweather seems more known than Pacman too
Calzaghe's power is deceptive, as Samarai has already said his opponents and sparring partners said he hits hard (and he goes very easy in sparring because of his brittle hands) so I'll take their word over someone who has probably never laced up a pair of gloves before.
Calzaghe's power never changed to me. It was always solid, not great. But it did seem like later in his career that, at times, he took some steam off of them when throwing occasionally.
According to sparring partners Calzaghe hit hard, even late in his career. When he started he had excellent power. Anyone says otherwise, they are talking complete horse shit.
