MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion Michael Katsidis is the latest in a growing list of fighters who want to challenge pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.
Unlike the rest of them, the Australian brawler is willing to come over and fight the Filipino boxing icon in front of his adoring countrymen.
“I will not fight you anywhere else but here in the Philippines and this is why I have come here before your people," said Katsidis, who arrived in the country Thursday accompanied by manager Brendon Smith.
A major Australian online betting company Sportsbet.com, which recently sold half of its shares to an Irish group for a staggering $200 million, will be backing Katsidis in his bid to fight the 30-year old Pacquiao.
“I will give your people this fight here. If you accept this challenge I will come to you," he said.
His backers, according to Katsidis, are willing to support and even bankroll his challenge of Pacquiao. The Australian is hoping that his presence here in the country would jumpstart negotiations with Pacquiao’s camp.
“It will be great for Manny to fight in front of his countrymen and it is only me who is willing to accept the task of being his challenger. The Mayweathers, Marquez and Mosleys, they won’t come here. They’re all focused in the United States," added Katsidis.
The Australian, who has set up his training camp in Thailand, is coming off an eight round technical knockout win over former world champion Jesus Chavez.
Katsidis is best known for his brutal 12-round slugfest against Filipino Augusto Caesar Amonsot two years ago in Las Vegas where both fighters ended up in the hospital. The Aussie won the fight via a close unanimous decision while Amonsot ended up being medically suspended indefinitely by the Nevada State Athletic Commission as specks of blood were traced outside of his brain.
The 28-year-old Katsidis (25-2, 21 KO’s) lost his interim crown to Joel Casamayor via a 10th round stoppage in March last year.
For his comeback fight after the Casamayor debacle Katsidis fought and lost to Juan Diaz in a close 12-round verdict September of 2008.
He has since recovered from those twin losses with back-to-back wins over Chavez and Angel Ramirez this year.
well not in the tune up sense we are used too
something to earn a pay day and try something new, maybe practice countering backing up
If it weren't Pac we were talking about, I'd agree.
But this is a guy who's got at least 5 top class guys waiting in line for his next move - with each one hoping it'll be them. If he doesn't fight one or more of them before his seemingly imminent retirement, everyone (including me) will call him a pussy. Kats isn't even in the same breathing space as those guys right now.
Why would Pac need a tune-up?
Kidding, right...?

Him vs either Valero and/or Prescott would be my absolute dream fights at 135 right now. I'll bet with anyone for those. :box2:
katsidis vs barrios for me... you want a blood & guts fight that could rival limon-chacon?
i guess this has to be it...
his fight before this which was held in the philippines was a stinker against a tomato can... him like duddy seem to be like shying away from brawling lately...
Yeah, the one against Ramirez. That was pretty boring. Thing is, that idiot kept running around like a pussy and Kats was still probably smarting from the 2 losses.
I really expected him to let himself go for the Chavez fight, but he just seemed nervous about getting caught again - even though he, unlike a certain Mr. Hatton, actually makes a real effort to keep those earmuffs on and chin tucked in.

He looked way too gun-shy against Chavez for my liking. It seems as though he's been very wary of letting his hands go ever since he got caught lucky by Casa... which is a shame, since before all that it was his best-known quality - coming to fight and stuff.
I want to see the old Kats who went forehead-to-forehead against Earl, and battered Amonsot.

He looked good against Chavez last time

He should fight Ricky Hatton. no way he gets Pac.
He also needs to realise people want to fight in the states for a reason, money ...
Hatton vs Katsidis would be huge in Manchester and the fight makes sense, I love them both but I think Hatton would stop Katsidis late on.
Kats shouldn't even be thinking about the Pacs of this world right now. By far he's not on that level yet. Who he should be looking at is Valero, Prescott, Khan, Guzman, or a Casa/Diaz rematch.
try manchester with the same PR stunt ............maybe ricky would consider fighting you
Damn. Another one I've wanted to see!
Unfortunately, I'd have to give Kats a really good chance against Hatton now. I like both men, but Hatton's punch resistance seems so shot to bits it's saddening. Kats may have been dropped a few times, but on each occasion he came back to give a beating (win or lose).
A fight I've been wanting to see for a while, but sadly he'll never be on Pac's radar. The latter will be long retired by the time Kats becomes champ at 135.
Id love to see a fight between these two happen but i dont think manny has him in his sights!!! The only way i can see them fighting is if the guy manny is meant to be fighting pulls out!!!
