I have studied fight after fight after fight on DVD and you tube......his amatuer and pro career. I have done the same with other fighters and all weight classes.
In a nutshell........even if his face was blurred and black trunks were white, .......there is no mistaken his style.....other fighters in any weight class with the same comparison .....well a lot look the same. I am a novice but I am curious what is it about his style that is such unique?
Is it hand speed, power, peek a boo style.....he seems like such a non technical fighter........or is it just a combination........he seemed one of a kind........did his style just suit his physique?
Thanks.
in a nut shell it was his size and speed, for someone as muscular as him he moved damn quick..his peek-a-boo style created by the late cuz is also unique, im pretty sure he approached his opponents full body on, instead of half body, which he compensated by great body movement in the torso..
tyson also trained to attack and move 3-4 times after each attack, oh and he trained his thighs extensively so he could close the distance quicker and pounce on his usually much taller opponent..
I'd have to check this but im pretty sure cus died quite early on in his career, i think rooney kept tyson in check, after he was sack then i believe was the fall of tyson (douglas)
yeah he died before he won his first world title. watch the 2008 documentary "Tyson" even mike admitted that his downfall was before he even won the title. He even said that his discipline died with cus because cus was the only man he feared. he was really like a father to him and cus kept mike in check until his unfortunate end. best documentary made on tyson.

When he did what cus taught him he became champion. when cus died so did tysons dedication and discipline. cus was the bull whip behind tyson and when he left so did his structure.

mike tyson fought with a combination of styles and disciplines. Cus wasnt his only trainer, he had manny others at the same time when he was learning how to box
Tyson's size seemed to fit his style well. Everybody he faced was taller wit a longer reach, so his style of offense and defense both was designed to negate that. Rare breed of puncher that had gr8 head movement and torso rhythm. And of course his inside attack to both the body and head was brutal. Handspeed just topped it off. Mike's style seemed to be his alone, although Cus had other fighters wit the same fightin stance.
Mike Tyson was the most destructive fighter of all time IMO. His technique and ability, speed and power and overall menacing, sinister sensibility allowed for him to instill a profound fear into his opponent's souls. Unfortunately that destructive power worked against him in the end.
Mike Tyson and Joe Frazier were a bit similar in Style. but while Joe is a Left Hooker. Mike Tyson has a deadly Uppercut and a devastating right cross. his Left hook have KO power as well.
I almost thought that Mike Tyson is the upgraded version of Joe Frazier
yeh but mike wasnt an inside fighter. he was a mid ranged fighter. when he would throw out is combos he would clinch or his opponent would and they would reset. the only time he really would fight on the inside is if the opponent would just sit on the ropes or would turtle or they would constantly hold him during combination. i thought he was an inside fighter at first but watching all his tapes he shows up to be more of a mid ranged fighter by choice and inside fighter when he needs to.
it was his aggressive technical style that allowed him to be so dominant in the ring. When he did what cus taught him he became champion. when cus died so did tysons dedication and discipline. cus was the bull whip behind tyson and when he left so did his structure. tysons natural talent, hard work and training pre championship days was an unstoppable freak of nature. a heavyweight that could punch like a weight class beyond the heavyweight division and could move like a lightweight fighter was unheard of and still is nowadays. show me another heavyweight that could throw a 5 punch combination in 1 second where every punch could knock you out cold for a week. Tyson was the perfect package. no one can match his speed, power, explosiveness and technique. he was elusive and sharp. speed is power and tyson had that. he also had power so good luck doing the math. what made tyson technical was his reflexes and head movement. no one can mimic that and have all the tools that he did. his counter punches setup his devastating knockouts especially when he would slip the jab and counter with the highlight reel knockout combo. we can only hope that another fighter even half was what mike tyson was will box and dominate like he did.
