why do people say welter weights should fight welters?

Let Floyd jump 2 weightclasses and fight Pavlik then. Then you know what it's like to be JMM. you dudes are missing the point.... 1) marquez called out mayweather, a bigger man, so he KNEW he'd have to move up for the fight. 2) it's marquez's biggest fight, and will be his biggest payday to date. 3) most importantly, marquez WANTS the fight.... listen to some of you, and you make it seem like marquez was FORCED into this shit. let it go....if pavlik could offer mayweather his biggest fight and biggest payday to date, he'd take the fight.....then you'd know what it feels like to be marquez.

fighters have been moving up and moving down in weight throughout history..people should chill,shut the fukk up and enjoy the fights....who was crying for billy conn when he fougt joe louis..and was outweighted by 30=pounds... i cosign this shit.....ppl who say that, obviously are not boxing fans. if a guy wants to move up in weight, what do you tell them? naw stay there and fight others guys in your weight class.....gtfoh. especially now, when there are so many great fights that can be made betw. fighters a division or 2 apart. ppl who say that have tunnel vision, and don't really mean what they're saying, they're basically only referring to one fighter, and it shows they aren't true fans of the sport. give dudes a chance.... nobody gave pacquiao a chance to beat oscar, and many thought the fight was a horrible matchup b/c of the size difference, but pacman went in there, proved everybody wrong, and shut everybody the **** up. it's only b/c he moved up to take on a bigger fighter, that we can even sit here and imagine a "fight if the century" scenario btw. him and floyd. that "ww should fight ww," shit is ignorant and gettin' old.

i don't think its wrong to ask a boxer to fight other boxers in their own weight divisions. catchweights are fine as long as both sides agree to the weight. if they can't agree then don't make the fight. IMHO catchweight fights aren't even necessary anyways.

Fukk catchweights. If it's realistic for a fighter to move all the way into a new division cuz he outgrew the last one, of course move up. It's not only fair, but necessary in those instances. Pac wantin a WW like Cotto to drop down cuz he can't fight effectively at 147 is dumb. If you can't be a full fledged WW, don't fukkin bother. Fight at your own weight. If Mr boat buyer can't make JWW no more, fight at WW, and do so against a real fukkin WW. Not like he once held the fukkin 147 lb world title or anything. I agree to an extent. My belief is if you want the fighter who's in a higher class than you, then move up to their weight and vice versa...simply because you're already taking an advantage away from one fighter. Now in the case of Pacquiao, if he wants to fight Cotto, they should make it at the WW limit of 141-147 and not limit Cotto to make 143 and same for Floyd.

I like to see it, and it's been happening since the dawn of time. Sometimes it's better than fighting the guys in your division. However, i think in this case it's different. Marquez barely settled into Lightweight and is already moving up another 2 divisions. Add in the factor that there's Mosley, Cotto and Williams to fight at Welterweight still and i think that's why. Marquez is small and there are various fighters to face who have more of a chance.

I have no problem with the shifting of weight as it opens up more potential fights with anyone within one or two weight classes. But if you are a Welterweight and there are other Welterweights who are marquee names in the sport, I believe you're doing an injustice by not fighting them and going for say a fighter who's 1 or 2 weight classes below you.
