Ex-pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. has his reasons why it took him longer to beat Ricky Hatton compared to Manny Pacquiao’s two-round demolition of the British toughie.
"When I fought Ricky Hatton, I had 10-ounce gloves on higher weight class,” said Mayweather Jr. in a report by Reuters.
He added that he was even on the defensive when he knocked down Hatton, who was still unbeaten before they fought at 145 pounds in 2007.
“When I knocked out Ricky Hatton, I was stepping backwards with 10-ounce gloves,” said Mayweather Jr., who retired undefeated with 39 wins (25 knock outs).
He added that Hatton’s attack mode against Pacquiao can also be blamed for the stinging loss.
“Ricky Hatton didn't stick to the game plan," said Mayweather Jr.
He, however, conceded that Pacquiao did well against Hatton.
"Pacquiao went out there and did what he had to do," he said.
Unlike Mayweather Jr., who has won six world boxing titles in five different weight classes, Pacquiao knocked Hatton out cold in just two rounds.
The Filipino boxing hero defeated the British superstar when they fought at the 140-pound division, which was Hatton’s divisional turf before losing to Pacquiao.
Marquez 'the best'
The 32-year-old Mayweather Jr., meanwhile, praised Juan Manuel Marquez during a joint news conference in downtown Los Angeles on Monday (May 18).
"Marquez is a hell of a guy. A tough opponent who's been around the sport a long long time. They say to be the best, you have to beat the best. So we two are the best fighters in the sport right now, so when I come back, I don't want to fight a has-been. I want to fight one of the best in the sport. Marquez is one of the best in the sport," he said.
Mayweather Jr. will be facing Marquez for his comeback fight in July.
He said he never expected to miss boxing as much as he did after announcing his retirement last June.
"I was really missing just being around the sport," he said.
Hatton didn't carelessly rush in on Floyd like he did on Pac until after the point deduction in the 7th. Floyd is also more defensive to avoid getting caught like Pac does at times by being wild. The "check hook" didn't KO Ricky it knocked him down because he jumped into and he also got up where Floyd finished him like he was supposed to. Why do so many posters think the check hook KO'd Ricky? It was the the combo's Floyd threw while sitting down on his punches after he had Ricky stunned that stopped him, Ricky got hit with about 10-20 more shots while Floyd was sitting down on his punches after the check hook knock down... Hatton never really recovered from that body shot in the 8th versus Floyd though.
For whatever reason Hatton's team didn't believe that Pac could hurt him and when Pac stunned and knocked Ricky down with the right he should have fought much more cautious and clinched until Pac slowed down some.
Styles make fights, what the hell is Floyd rambling on about? He isn't known for his power, he is no mike tyson or manny pacquiao. He is known as a defensive slick boxer, not a power puncher. He could knock out Marquez in the first round and it wouldn't mean squat diddly other then he picked a fight with someone who called a great small man...
"Marquez is a hell of a guy. A tough opponent who's been around the sport a long long time. They say to be the best, you have to beat the best. So we two are the best fighters in the sport right now, so when I come back, I don't want to fight a has-been. I want to fight one of the best in the sport. Marquez is one of the best in the sport," he said.
is it me or is PBF tryin to dismiss pacman? he havin subliminal digs at him? or is he tryin to boost up jmm so if he beats him it looks like he's beatin the best fighter out there? Pac's p4p #1 for a reason, no?
That's because at 147 he had to face a Bigger Fighter/legit WW like Collazo. Collazo is a skilled fighter that is a Southpaw and was a title holder. That's who Ricky fought in his first fight at 147. Same guy that gave Berto a tough test. This wasn't some past prime 140 pounder Ricky could bully around. It was a legit WW that was skilled and proved strong. And then he made the mistake of bulking up to 158 by fight-time which made him sluggish and tired as the fight went on. He didn't make that mistake against Floyd.
Floyd is who he fought next at 147. A fighter that is under 150 pounds come fight-night, just like many JrWW. Not a big WW like the others who blow up 10-20 pounds by fight-night.
Paulie was actually unhealthy himself. His hands have always plagued him. Going into that fight he couldn't get himself to throw punches in fear of breaking his hands. Not good for a figther and something that weighs heavily on fighters with brittle hands.
Hatton didn't look so good against a live fighter in Lazcano. Same fight people talked about Hatton being past his prime.
Here was the point at making the fight at 147: There is less risked in showing up flat for fight-night if you only have to dehydrate down fewer pounds to make weight at 147 as opposed to 140. Say you are 150 come fight-night for your JrWW fights. That's 10 pounds you have to lose for the scales and then 10 pounds you have to put back on. At 147, you only have to lose 3 pounds for the scales and can put that right back on in no time.
140 is the division he fights at but he doesn't weigh 140 come fight-night. Even Pac was 147 on fight-night when he fought Diaz at 135.
It wasn't the gloves and it wasn't the division as much as it was the styles of the fighters. Pac goes for the "KO" while Floyd's objective is the "W"
to me my man?
its really either MP hits harder or PBF protects those brittle hands... just like u stated with malignaggi...
its one of those two or some degree of combination...
same pie no matter how u slice it...
Was Floyd really stepping backward when he landed his check hook?
I think Floyd has toned down his silly smack talk now. He seemed very respectful towards JMM.
I noticed this too, hes definetly giving Marquez his props.
140 is not Hatton's fighting-weight: 147+ is. 140 is just the division he fought in. Fighters are allowed to dehydrate their bodies to make weight and then rehydrate by fight-time. You know this.
obviously that's what I meant. 140 is hatton's best fighting weight.
Colloza > than the 140 pound fighters because of his size and skill. That's why Hatton had trouble...he fought a legit WW in his prime named Collazo and not some past prime 140 pound fighter. That's why Hatton struggled along with his mistake of bulking up to 158 by fight-time.
tszyu > collazo.
also collazo is a decent sized WW, while hatton would be a small WW.
Floyd shouldn't go back down to 140. These fighters should just fight at their fight-time weight and stop bullshitting the public.
too hard to change the system. sorry
Floyd when he was fighting at 140 was better. He was faster and threw more often. He looked like he wanted to fight. Towards the end of his 147 pound days, he looked like he had enough and couldn't wait to go into retirement.
true, floyd looked way better at 140
Was Floyd really stepping backward when he landed his check hook?
yes, you have to step back w/ the check hook cause the opponent is rushing in
I think Floyd has toned down his silly smack talk now. He seemed very respectful towards JMM.
my thoughts on floyd being respectful:
- its a mismatch and floyd has to hype up jmm to make it seem like a competitive fight
- floyd was surrounded by a million+ mexicans
- floyd is tired of being the villian and getting negative press, he wants to be a hero like pac.
Against a pure boxer like Floyd who isnt trying to kill you...the extra weight at 147 pounds helped Hatton.....
Against Pac.....coming in his natural weight class..didnt help him when Pac was trying to kill him.
it doesn't matter pac and floyd beat hatton regardless.
140 is hatton's best fighting weight. that's not even questionable.
that's not really an advantage or disadvantage
its possible that if floyd goes back down to 140 he won't perform as usual, but once acclimated he should be ok. that's what a tune up is for.
hatton cannot beat floyd in any division. But I doubt floyd gives hatton a gatti-esque beating.

Floyd fought a healthier version of Hatton though. Hatton didn't have to drain his body to make weight and was undefeated at the time. Hatton weighs in at 140 on the scales and then rehydrates up in weight.
140 is hatton's best fighting weight. that's not even questionable.
The one advantage Hatton had fighting at 147 against Floyd was that he didn't have to drain his body down to 140 for the scales and risk showing up flat if he didn't rehydrate properly. Hatton also didn't make the same mistake he made against Collozao (who was a legit WW unlike Floyd) by showing up at 158 for fight-time. He didn't bulk up again this time around for Floyd because he learned from his mistake; Team Hatton talked about this. He basically came in at his normal JrWW Fight-Time weight when fighting Floyd, who himself doesn't weigh over 150 by fight-time.
that's not really an advantage or disadvantage
The only argument you can make is that at that exact point in time, when Floyd was fighting at WW and hadn't fought in a bit at 140, Floyd is healthy at 147 and could possibly risk showing up flat if he had to make weight at 140 because he wasn't used to dehydrating his body for the scales.
its possible that if floyd goes back down to 140 he won't perform as usual, but once acclimated he should be ok. that's what a tune up is for.
However, if we made the fight back when Floyd was fighting at 140, forget it; Floyd whoops that ass like he did Gatti since it was a better version of Floyd back then. It's also why Hatton didn't want a piece of him back then. Too good.
hatton cannot beat floyd in any division. But I doubt floyd gives hatton a gatti-esque beating.
healthier... ok if thats ur thing... but still...
ricky performs best @ 140... way better than he is/was @ 147...
he should have looked flat against malignaggi if he was getting unhealthier @ 140 man...
MP was at his first fight at 140 and was very unproven at that weight class...
PBF was @ his 3rd or fifth @ WW...
if PBF had only said MP hits harder, or he was trying to protect his brittle hands thats why it took longer for him to KO hatton id buy it right away...

Floyd is more defensive, Pacquiao is more offensive. Roach's tactics also played a big part as he knew that exact punch would KO Ricky.
Agree: different ways of fighting. Pac was always going to KO Ricky faster because he was shooting for the KO from the start. Floyd was going to break down Hatton and then if the KO came, he would knock him out.
Maybe there is however something to fighting a fighter that is undefeated and has never been knocked out vs. a fighter on the slide who has a loss by KO.
Either way: Pac goes for the KO and Floyd goes for the Win.
"When I fought Ricky Hatton, I had 10-ounce gloves on higher weight class,” said Mayweather Jr. in a report by Reuters.
“When I knocked out Ricky Hatton, I was stepping backwards with 10-ounce gloves,” said Mayweather Jr., who retired undefeated with 39 wins (25 knock outs).

lmao, 2 ounces is not a big deal
If it wasn't they wouldn't have made fighters increase the glove size by 2 oz.
Floyd was actually the first person I heard come out against the 10oz gloves that Vegas wanted fighters to wear. He basically said it was messing with tradition.
I'm in favor of 8oz gloves for everybody. Maybe even 6oz gloves in some divisions.
heres the truth.
who knows if pbf would have ko'd hatton sooner but one thing is for sure, there is a significant difference in 8 and 10 oz gloves.
let em know........ most ppl on these forums are blinded by hate
If u have ever fought or sparred 8 and 10 oz gloves are a huge diffrence but with that being said that wasnt the only reason floyd.so what?floyd shouldnt have to say anything about it. Chico would of ko'd pac but fighters just fight diffrent vs certain fighters
cosign.... these fans dont know shit
