I'm just wondering. A while back I remember someone saying they would have preferred Floyd fight a secondary welterweight boxer (gatekeeper if you like) rather than Marquez. I disagree myself because I think Mayweather/Marquez makes for a great style match-up and will be cool to watch two massive names clashing, however I do think it's a bit disrespectful (for lack of a better word) to treat such a great boxer as a tune-up and force him to take such extreme measures to accomodate him. Also, which do you think would have provided Mayweather with the greatest challenge?
Give me some reasoning please, and try not to come in here all gung ho, with "fraud"s and "coward"s flying everywhere
This is the problem with so many of these debates.
"Mayweather said" comes into it wayyyyyyy too much.
Next time anyone quotes from one of those sincere, candid chats Mayweather participates in soooo verrry often, let me know.
Yeah exactly... The "pinch of salt" rule goes out the window when it suits agendas
the jmm fight is a good tune up / set up for pac, but if he's gonna price himself out of a pac fight, he might as well get his old wbc strap back from berto.
I think Mayweather chose him because his fanboys can say "he beat JMM!" and completely overlook the size difference, which is considerable.
Any day now, Burner or Larry will post a thread claiming that JMM is the bigger man or some stupid shit like that.
I think it was a clever bit of opportunism. They reckon Marquez will be effectively a "tune-up" opponent at 147lbs and it's a super-fight at the same time based on name value
Also it probably helps in the negotiations with Pacman should he crush JMM and get higher viewing figures for it
maybe only against pac.
he has pac's number.
marquez didn't look good at 135. i doubt he can beat any of the 140 guys like bradley , witter , etc.
I thought he looked pretty damn good at 135lbs
We can't underestimate the fact that he was fighting a very high standard of opposition, and he does seem to have altered his style so that he is more effective offensively but gets hit more
I'd tentatively pick Marquez to beat Bradley and Witter actually
It appears that the main quarrel with this fight is the principal of forcing such a highly respected boxer to move up two weight-classes
At simple face value, ignoring the intangibles, i doubt it would attract such criticism. Not that it doesn't deserve criticism
hell i wouldn't mind if floyd fought a 140 guy at 147 for his comeback fight.
at least it'll only be 1 division move up instead of 2.
do you think Marquez could become a legit titleholder at 140lbs?
I think it's completely fair to fight a tune-up after a two year lay-off. Whether Ali did it or not.
However it's forcing a great fighter to make such sacrifices that lower his value to merely a tune-up that is the trouble.
Personally I think once they're in the ring Marquez will be anything but a "tune-up" but it seems clear that this is what Mayweather chose him for so that's besides the point.
I'm not arguing that a tune up fight isn't acceptable, my argument just lies in the fact that Mayweather says Mayweather is an ATG. ATGs don't fight tune up fights, and if they do, they don't fight someone 3 weight classes below them. Marquez isn't a tune up fight, it's a stunt.
P.S. I completely agree that Marquez won't feel as much like a tune up as some might think.
I would have preferred one of the WW's.
What pisses me off is that when Floyd KO's Marquez he's gonna be all like "oh look how good I am, I came back after a two year layoff and KO'd the #2 P4P fighter", and that's bullshit.
If Mayweather treated it like a tuneup, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Quintana, Collazo, and Berto are more dangerous than JMM at 147.
And I love JMM.
This is all for Pacquiao, he came back for Pacquiao. We shouldn't worry so much about JMM, why are people having a hard time understanding that?
any of the options there would have benn better than make a boxer move up 2 div to fight him. Collazo would have been a great option he has good boxing skills and not too much power hell even quintana but hey we are talking about Floyd here i hope marquez land a good one in the chin :fingersx:

not to detract from your point but i think you shouldn't put so much stock into what comes out of Mayweather's mouth
I like how none of you mentioned that it MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL...to put a GREEN up and comer like Berto in there with Mayweeather..especially after a SLICK boxer like Collazo gave him hell..are you guys dumb you honestly think Haymon who is ALSO Floyds manager would Let Floyd undress his future star.
DUMBASSES!!!
Hes also signed to fight Juan Urango...a 140 pounder..moving up to 147.
it's a hypothetical question dude. Mayweather has signed to fight Marquez too you know
Berto is at least equal to Collazo
I would have preferred one of the WW's.

Why does he have to come back and tune up to one of those second stringers? He's an ATG right? Ali came out of retirement to fight Frazier.
It should have been Mayweather v Cotto/Mosley. No questions. Winner could fight Pac.

I say quintana because floyd hasn't fought for 2 years but he clearly has stayed in great shape and may have been doing some sparring on the side. I still don't think a 2 yr absence is an excuse for this weight fiasco.

By the way, no disrespect intended to Berto. I realise he's a champion, not a gatekeeper.
But, well... He did arguably lose to Collazo in his last fight and I don't see him as superior to the other two.
