I been watching alot of his fights in the past and he violates every rule that my trainer says not to do..yet why is he so good? He keeps his hands down 90% of the time yet he wins the fight without cuts and bruises. He does strange uppercuts its like a swing uppercut and yet he can knock an opponent out with it...its strange and yet hes my idol i would love to have his style in boxing yet its wierd how much things he does in the ring that you SHOULDN'T do and
is it just me or does he have long reach?i cant really tell..whats your thoughts on his fighting style
sorry for the bad grammar
Roy was brought up to be a fighter. I remember hearing (I think it was Calzaghe - Jones 24/7) that Roy sr would force him to bob and weave by swinging a board with nails at him when training and this was just one of the cruel training regimines he'd have to follow.
You have to imagine that when you truly eat, drink, think and sleep boxing for most of your childhood one could develop extraordinary skills. If you watch Roy right now I think you'll still notice he knows every trick in the book, its just too bad his body's caught up to him though
His Fightin Style is Unique i've tried to copy it a few times in sparring with my hands held real low, but im never quick enough to dodge the punches against a good jabber, RJJ was just something special.
Ali broke the rules too but when was the last time we saw a HW like him?
Of course, it came back to haunt the both of them as they declined...although Roy's muscle-weight-loss just destroyed him so maybe he at least has the upper body reflexes a while longer and strength like Ali did.
Fighters like Hopkins who don't have that natural athletic phenom ability will be students to the game and put their time in learning the "Craft/Art" of Boxing...so they will last longer into their 30's. Roy was always going to decline in his 30's and be more vulnerable....he just pushed it off the mountain with his move up to HW and then back down to LH. He should have just retired after the Ruiz fight. I thought he was about to until Tarver showed up and ran his mouth and Roy's ego got in the way with what he should have done......but that is boxing and the boxer's ego.
Roy was blessed with tremendous athletic ability and excellent reflexes, which is what ultimately came back to haunt him later on in his career.
Those natural abilities eventually began to diminish and he had no solid fundamental foundation to fall back on.
So, keep those hands up, son.

Agreed, you guys should watch the first Liston - Clay fight and hear what the commentator is saying.
yea...that windmill punch he caught some dude 3 times with it??wtf?? lol or those uppercuts that he actually swings with i never seen that.. if i tried that while sparring ill probably end up breaking my arm or something
Jones vs richard hall is where he really put the windmill in effect..I suggest watching Jones-Telesco also..It was a entertaining fight of back and forth shit talking.

I've been sitting back watching some of his classic fights too.. Man, it's just unbelievable how quick he was and them powerful, chopping punches he would break them down with...Not to mention the show he would put on in the ring like the windmill punch..lol
thats what happens when a world class athlete does boxing. Imagine if most NFL cornerbacks or linebackers were in boxing. I'm not saying they would be as good but thats the kind of athleticism that Roy had.
Youre not going to see another rjj in your lifetime. He was athletically so far ahead of his time it wasn't funny. So far ahead that he got away with ignoring boxing fundamentals.
