Is there anyone else that sees the similarities between the two? Similar body types, although Victor is at 140 and I don't quite see him having as many weight problems in the future as Fernando. They both have a fan friendly, carefree personality. That star quality that makes people like them. They also have similar fan friendly, fighting styles and come from the same area. Time will tell how Victor Ortiz' career will play out but I see a lot of similarities between these two.
For me it's impossible to see Ortiz and don't remember Vargas. Their careers won't end up the same way, by the time Vargas was climbing up there were titans there, while Ortiz has a way more comfortable division with the exception of Manny Pacquiao there.
I don't see why people see the comparison between Ortiz and Vargas. Vargas was loud and onery, Ortiz is more patient and is carefull while talking to the media. Ortiz is from the midwest, Vargas was a socal guy, Vargas was a big jr middleweight, Ortiz is a JR welter. I see more of a comparision between Olympian Estrada and Vargas both SOCAL Mex-Americans, both around the 160lb limit, both fight with a passion and reckless abandon. Ortiz doesn't fight like that he's more patient and not as fiery in the ring. I like Ortiz but there isn't much comparision between him an Vargas.
Ortiz is from the Midwest but he's been in Oxnard for several years. He had a drug dealing youth and stopped because of boxing and I believe Danny Garcia adopted him or became his guardian and has mentored him the way he did Vargas. They have similar in ring styles but Vargas was ruined after Tito.
the difference is that Ortiz is now in the company of guys like oscar and hopkins etc that can mentor him alot better than vargas handlers. ortiz troubled past is coupled with the fact that unlike vargas, hes not a fukkin moron.
think about the life vargas could have tracked if he aimed to be something different than some fake azz badass. Vargas tried to appeal to that crowd to great success but in the end his skills never matched his mouth.
true, but I think its best not to rush ortiz. I wanna see the kid succeed and not get ruined by rushing him into fights he's not ready for.
He could equal Vargas if he keeps doing what he's doing, keep improving and notching impressive wins, and I can see him surpassing Vargas just because of his discipline outside of the ring, he should have a good, lengthy career if he stays disciplined.
if they want to give him a step up in class of opponent but yet keep him away from the best of the division they should match him up with one of the following fighters , or a few before he takes the next step :
malinaggi
lazcano
torres
hopkins
alvarado
When's Victor's next fight? He'd be the perfect guy to throw on the JMM-Mayweather undercard. I know Nate Campell might be too big of a step-up for him at this time but I think the perfect fight for Ortiz right now would be Chop-Chop Corley. I know people wrote him off after he went on that bad slump but he got robbed on ESPN Friday Night Fights and I heard he won a fight here recently.
a friend was the 1 that told me that he's trainer/managment is the same people that managed vargas too....
lol he said hopfully they dont rush ortiz like they did to vargas

but Ortiz comes from a troubled past too. best to err on the side of caution and not rush Ortiz too fast

Ortiz will be greater that Vargas..
Ortiz is a future star and has a great personality..
The personality that you want your kids to look up to and want to be like.. Hes a great kid, and i think golden boy is moving him slowly but surely so he doesnt make the same mistakes that vargas did..
there was a reason why they did that. Vargas had a very troubled past, and he seemed to always be into some trouble. During the amatuers that was the biggest talk during the olympics, how would he manage if he could just stay out of trouble. Vargas was rushed by main events because of this, it was either wait for him to fukk up and go to jail or throw him to trinidad and get rich quickly.
but Ortiz comes from a troubled past too. best to err on the side of caution and not rush Ortiz too fast
I completely disagree. Ortiz' team should keep him the **** away from Bradley and Campbell.
He's be ready to beat them now, but it would be in a very tough fight. If they take one, maybe two more fights after Maidana, both of them would get dispatched of.

How about Holt? I know he can bang, but would he be as high-risk as Campbell?
And I think he'd fare pretty well against Bradley. Would probably lose a UD, but still. Has his chin even been tested yet?
