A)
- Cotto beats Clottey
- Pacquiao fights Cotto in winter
- Mayweather fights Mosley
- Mayweather fights Cotto
- Pacquiao fights Marquez
- Mayweather *maybe* fights Pac. Maybe doesn't. (if Arum swerves Mayweather in winter who's to say he won't do it again)
- Cotto is off the agenda for Mayweather Jr.
B)
- Clottey upsets Cotto
- Pacquiao/Mayweather mega-fight occurs ASAP
- Mosley is left with Clottey
- Cotto is frozen out of the mega-fights and has to rebuild his rep
- Mayweather/Pacquiao winner faces him
- Mayweather retires (assuming he beat Pac)
I have left out things that I can't predict (such as what Pacquiao will do beyond Mayweather/Cotto/Mosley) as it's too distant or I don't have enough information yet... Feel free to point out something you think is unrealistic or a possibility I missed
I've def. considered it. But welterweight needs a BEST fighter. If Cotto wins, and I still think he should, I think we can safely say he's the man at 147, above Shane.
I suppose on the flipside you could say, if Clottey wins, welterweight will have 3 boxers worthy of "king" status (4 if you still include Margarito, 5 if you count Pwill)... The 'half full' way of looking at things heh
I hear you. I fully expect a month of Pac-Cotto hype if Cotto beats Clottey, but I don't expect anything to be a done deal until the outcome of Mayweather-Marquez. Just my gut. Mine could be wrong, yours could be right.
yeah, it could still turn out to just be mind-games or Pac's camp manouvering themselves into a more favourable position for negotiations.
but at this point it don't look too promising
Scenario A is my pick.
I ideally wanted to see Mayweather fight Pac and Cotto in that order. But if Pac and Cotto face off, Floyd fighting the winner is almost as good as fighting them both, even if a historical Pac-Mayweather mega-fight goes out the window because of it. Silver lining is it would make a Mayweather-Cotto fight a lot bigger.
I def. prefer it to scenario B, because I think Cotto should beat Clottey and I'd be disappointed for the division if he didn't (he has all the tools to UD him, so there's something wrong if he doesn't). And I'd rather see Mayweather-Mosley as a precursor to a Mayweather-Pac/Cotto fight than as a follow-up.
But if Mayweather beats Marquez, I see Pac-Mayweather happening regardless of what Cotto does against Clottey. If so, then I hope there's a way that a Mayweather-Cotto fight can happen should Floyd beat Pac. That's my ideal scenario from a Mayweather POV.
I'm starting to really get the impression Arum doesn't want this. At least not before Pac/Cotto
But if Clottey were to beat Cotto it would surely back Arum into a corner. I agree with you that Cotto should win but Clottey's a pretty big hurdle to pass and it's hard to not at least consider the possibility of an upset
The fact that Pac, Cotto, Floyd and to a lesser degree Mosley's futures all look intertwined has it's downsides; I don't think it's realistic that they will all get to face each other.
I personally think if cotto gets past clottey he will get the pac fight and beat him! he will face mayweather.
wouldn't be suprised to see marquez fighting hatton and Pac fighting valero, but hey who knows!
I am also confident that with warren seeing hatton on the slide he will angle for khan to fight hatton at wembley in 2010, whether hatton would work with warren is another story!
Easily scenario A.
I'm not as interesting in Mayweather/Pac as everyone else. I just don't think it'd be as competitive. I'm more interested in Pac/Marquez 3, and Cotto/Mayweather. Those are the fights that should happen.
Absolutely on that one! Mayweather-Pac would be a megafight, but I like the Mayweather-Cotto matchup better. And I would love to see Pac-Marquez 3.

b i guess but i wont mind seeing a
I'm the opposite. Well, kind of.
I'm fiending for Mayweather/Pacquiao. I think it's the closest to a pick 'em fight of all the potential bouts and I think it would be absolutely monumental in boxing. A Duran/Leonard or a Robinson/Armstrong
I'd love Mayweather/Cotto too but I think Floyd would deal with Cotto quite comfortably and Cotto has no where near the all time status of Pacquiao
I agree that the stature of Pac/Mayweather is huge. It'd be great for the sport, and I wouldn't mind seeing it for that reason. Even if Cotto beats Pac, it wouldn't be as big as Pac/Mayweather if they fought after Floyd beats JMM.
But, we just disagree on the fighters, which is all good. I think Pac has very little chance at beating Floyd. And I think Cotto is a live dog against Floyd.
But we're lucky that all these fights are even options. 2009 is already been a great year and the future looks bright.

which ever one gets me..mayeather-pacman..and mayweather -cotto..i want both and id be perfectly happy
yeah. the thought that triggered this thread was that the best chance we have at Mayweather/Pacquiao definitely happening is if Clottey beats Cotto
BUT that would probably leave Cotto out in the cold
I'm torn. The two fights I want to see Mayweather fight most of all are against Cotto or Pacquiao. So :dunno:
i am as well
do you think the predictions are realistic?
I want to see Mayweather vs Pac at all cost. I think that is the super fight and one that boxing needs.
As far as JMM vs Mayweather, I would love to see JMM upset Mayweather but if that happens that could cancel out the possibility of Pac vs Mayweather happening so I'm torn.
I would love to see a great fight from Cotto and Clottey, even though I think if Cotto boxes, he wins.
