Taylor was only a round from winning a lopsided UD against Froch last night. A round from being the SMW champion of the world. He embarrassed Froch, and made him look amateur at times. He showed all the attributes of an elite boxer. A great jab, a great defence, and great power. The only thing he lacked was the finish.
People calling for him to quit are wrong. Taylor still has a lot to offer boxing. The first thing he needs is a trainer who will teach him how to box intelligently in the later rounds. How to frustrate an opponent and tie them up. And instill in him a mentality that will get him through tough times.
For me personally, it was hard to see a fighter ready to start his career afresh, and lose his opportunity in the final moments. It was a fight he should have won, but somehow lost, even though in my eyes, he deserved to win. That's not to take anything away from Froch. He is a world class operator, and proved it by overcoming the odds, and snatching a victory from defeat. But he was second best for 90% of the fight, and that doesn't sit right with me.
So to anybody that says Taylors career is over, I will argue the opposite. He only needs a win over a big name like Roy Jones, and he is back in the title mix again. With the right training and mentality, he can get back to the top, and beat the Kessler's, the Froch's, and the Bute's of this world.
To answer the question, I believe Taylor should quit.
In a short space of time he gone from being one of HBO's marquee fighters. A man, they were paying multi-million dollars, and generally invested alot of money in as the belived he would be the next Superstar. Fast forward to today, he has been dropped from HBO, and probably earned about half the money he is accustomed too for the Froch fight, and has been KO'd twice by two non-elite fighters. Apart from this, Taylor by his own admission does not love boxing - he is a gifted athlete (minus his stamina) but he is not a fighter. He does not have the desire to really push himself to get back to the top, so why continue? he will likely be stopped again - even by Andrade who will walk him down the same way as Froch and Pavlik before him.
i gotta agree.... taylor's career has already peaked, its all down hill from here. might as well get out while people still have a positive opinion of you.

NO sir he would have won a SD not a UD.. You do know the difference right?

real champions win in clutch situations. taylor is a good boxer tho.
A round from being the SMW champion of the world.
almost doesn't count
He embarrassed Froch, and made him look amateur at times.
froch is an amatuer and taylor lost to an amatuer.
He showed all the attributes of an elite boxer. A great jab, a great defence, and great power.
no, those are attributes of a regular boxer not an elite boxer.
The only thing he lacked was the finish.
taylor is lacking in stamina, heart, killer instinct, good technique, etc... taylor might grab a title in the future, but he'll never be a great boxer
People calling for him to quit are wrong.
imho, taylor got nothing left to prove (because he's a B- boxer right now). he just can't get over the hump and if he is financially set, he should quit boxing while he's still got some brain cells.
Taylor still has a lot to offer boxing.
yeah, being a gatekeeper.
The first thing he needs is a trainer who will teach him how to box intelligently in the later rounds.
the problem isn't that he doesn't know how to survive and get on his bike... the problem is his stamina.
How to frustrate an opponent and tie them up.
manny steward probably already taught him this...
And instill in him a mentality that will get him through tough times.
you can teach somebody discipline, but you can't teach them the warrior mentality.
For me personally, it was hard to see a fighter ready to start his career afresh, and lose his opportunity in the final moments. It was a fight he should have won, but somehow lost, even though in my eyes, he deserved to win.
taylor deserved to lose. his stamina is poor and the pool he's working from is shallow.
That's not to take anything away from Froch. He is a world class operator, and proved it by overcoming the odds, and snatching a victory from defeat. But he was second best for 90% of the fight, and that doesn't sit right with me.
yeah, but that's boxing... maybe you should pick another sport?
So to anybody that says Taylors career is over, I will argue the opposite. He only needs a win over a big name like Roy Jones, and he is back in the title mix again.
true, you're only as good as your last fight, but rjj is shot. taylor should fight a couple bums to get his confidence back and test his stamina. taylor should forget about mega-fights for now.
With the right training and mentality, he can get back to the top, and beat the Kessler's, the Froch's, and the Bute's of this world.
all the tools are there, but no heart and no stamina. I dunno if you can train for that.
Taylor looked great. He just has no business fighting at 168, he's too small and got beat by a comparatively inferior boxer who was just a much stronger man.
If Taylor and his coaches can't solve his stamina issues, then there is really no reason for me to believe he can capture another title and hold it. At best, I see Taylor as another Zab Judah... He can beat some of the elite fighters, but can easliy lose to a few of the mediocre fighters in the division.
Lopsided win or not Taylor lost having no stamina is not an excuse. Taylor is not a great fighter a gate keeper at best. You don't fight a championship fight with no cardio thats just plain disrespect. It was a great fight its like watching a Rocky movie. When froch stepped on the gas on the 12th eye of the tiger was playing in my mind. lol
Boxing needs these kinds of fighters just pure heart it is good for the business.
I agree with a lot of this statement, though there's some exaggeration in there. (90%?)
The one thing that stuck out though is the Roy Jones reference... Roy is shot to Hell.
A Roy Jones win would mean nothing in boxing terms, but it would give Jermain more $$$$$ leverage to get a big fight should he win. Taylor vs Jones would be a big fight even if Jones is shot to bits. HBO would certainly pick it up.
Taylor did well but you'll always know he'll tire down the stretch.
It's been his biggest weakness his whole career. And with him getting older it won't change.
Any guy with enough heart and chin has a chance to finish Taylor late.
It's was evident against Hopkins and Wright. It's just that those guys don't go for the kill.
You're either 12 or a damn fool.
So..all Taylor has to do is beat a half-dead Roy Jones and everything will be ok??
As if that will increase his stanima and reverse all the damage he has and certainly will take if he keeps fighting.
Jermain is in the wrong game...he should quit while he is ahead.
He doesn't know what to do when his opponent is hurt..and even worse...he doesn't know what to do when HE is hurt.
Taylor can't beat the top guys at 168..he has to get out NOW.
I didn't say everything would be ok. An easy win over Roy Jones would get his name back in the lights and make him a legitimate opponent again for the top guys. With improvement he could get to the top again. At this present time he will be fighting bums, and he deserves more than that.
And if anything, your post made you sound 12. That time of the month?

That and managing to go 12 rounds without being KO'd that is. A small matter, I know. And saying Froch was second best for 90% of the fight is, frankly, delusional, Froch owned the second half of that fight, one judge had him ahead and even the TV guys had it even going into the 12th.
I wouldn't call for Taylor to quit, but he should maybe give it careful thought. He isn't going to walk into a rematch, and will have to earn another shot at Froch, or whoever beats Froch. RJJ is past it, and everybody knows it, a win might earn Taylor some cash but wouldn't throw him back in the SMW mix. Full credit to Jermaine if he does earn that shot, but as you said yourself;
With the right training and mentality, he can get back to the top, and beat the Kessler's, the Froch's, and the Bute's of this world.
Does he still have that mentality, and that desire? Taylor must ask himself that. It was pure will that won Froch that fight; Taylor wanted it, but Froch wanted it more.
He can get on top again. He was 12 seconds from doing just that. He needs a coach who will force that drive, and determination into him.
They say that your body doesn't respond the same from taking punishment over and over again. This is the second time taylor has been ko'd and both times it was viscous... Not only is it bad for his health, but I'm sure his family members want him to hang em up now. It's not as if Taylor is struggling for cash, atleast I don't think he is... I hope he isn't
Taylor has taken alot of punishment in his career, he probably should think about retiring. War with winky, hopkins, pavlik, and now froch. Time to hang it up unless he really believes he can get back on top again.

It wasn't exactly lopsided. I personally would've had Froch winning 114-112 had Taylor survived the final round.
Taylor fought a good fight for most of it though and showed a good defence so I see no reason for him to retire unless he really has no desire left.
Froch made far too many mistakes though and could have fought a whole lot better.
Not lopsided, but in most peoples opinion a close but clear victory.
And I think the manner in which Froch won was the only way he could have won. Taylor was the superior boxer, but Froch was the superior fighter.
