While there is a general assumption that Manny Pacquiao will get by Ricky Hatton next month and then move on to face Floyd Mayweather later in 2009, Bob Arum wasn’t so sure. “I haven’t talked to Manny about it because we’re concentrating on Hatton because Hatton is a tough fight,” Arum said this week. “The question with a Mayweather fight is at what weight? That’s the big question. At 140 I don’t think there’s any problem making that fight. If Floyd wants to come in at a higher weight, I don’t know.”
“A catch-weight is a possibility also. But none of that has been discussed and I won’t let anyone discuss it. Until after this fight.”
What about the little fact that Mayweather has said many times to the media that he would never do business with Bob Arum again. “But he could go f*** himself, tell him that,” said Arum, as the reporters Franklin McNeil, George Willis and Tim Smith all burst into laughter.
I approached Arum a few minutes later for clarification, explaining the reason Mayweather said he won’t do business with Top Rank again was because he used it as a handy excuse to duck Cotto and Margarito when Arum tried to produce Cotto-Mayweather and Margarito-Mayweather clashes over the last two years.
Arum’s reply: “F*** Mayweather. Pacquiao’s the big attraction. He has to come to us if he wants it. If he doesn’t come to us, there’s dozens of other guys we can fight.”
Mayweather may have to come to terms with the fact he may have to accept the short end of the purse with Pacquiao, along with moving back down to 140. Because Mayweather really doesn’t have any other viable options, as Juan Manuel Marquez reportedly won’t fight him at 147, Sugar Shane Mosley is too much of a risk, and Paul Williams is even more of a dangerous risk for Floyd than Mosley.
This is all assuming Pacquaio takes care of business with Hatton, which is far from a certainty.
u guys! shyt on the baldomir w all u want! the revisionist history is easily applied to any fighters career! pbf iz and will always be the best in this era period! he could of fought plenty of fighters. I guarantee that if it was margie or cotto in baldomirs place then you would be screaming that same bs!
no I wouldn't have man because he beat Diego I had no complaints, when beat Castillo the 2nd time I forgave him for the first time, when beat Gatti I understood why he did it but Mitchell? Judah? Baldomir? De La Hoya? Hatton at 147 after what Collazo did to him there, not even attempting to become a multiple division champ by facing Ricky where he belongs the way Manny Pacquiao is about to do. things is all you can say is 6 time champ in 5 different classes but all you can proudly speak of is Genaro, Diego and Jose Luis which is only 3 of 6, for the rest of them there were better opponents to face whom were champions, no excuses just facts. he didn't stick around to face the best fighters in the world just a careful selection of the batch..
as I said before Joshua Clottey vacated the IBF strap to face Miguel Cotto, he could have held the belt ransom facing nobodies or known guys that he can clearly beat but he's a warrior, he doesn't go for that shit he wants to share the ring amongst ONLY the elite of the sport, his position as a pound for pound Welterweight demands he fights nothing but the best and him as the warrior he is he is fulfilling that even if it means he has to vacate the strap, at the end of the day there are too many straps to even give a shit what champion you are, it's about the opposition too, the opposition is actually more important at times, Roy Jones Jr and Tommy Hearns is a good example of that, they both share amazing accomplishments as far as titles and ranks go but what separates the 2 regardless of championships is the quality of opponents, the monsters they've tamed in their times. THAT'S the determining factor in mostly any case..
What about the little fact that Mayweather has said many times to the media that he would never do business with Bob Arum again. “But he could go f*** himself, tell him that,” said Arum
:rofl::rofl: one of floyd's many reasons not to fight marg and cotto was that he would never do business with bob again now with the irs on his back floyd needs bob LOL. bob just made a new fan, tell em bobfather lol!!!
I'm not sure how Pac's fans feel about this but is there a good chance that Roach persuades Manny to not fight Floyd
I think roach would put pac in with floyd, but floyd gotta let it be a 50/50 purse split.
Manny would be game but Roach has already stated that Floyd is stylistically bad for Manny and has also said that if your going to beat Floyd, you'll look bad doing it ( Kind of like Hopkins, Whitaker )
yes, but that's why floyd gotta make the reward worth the risk
Like Tua said JMM would be a legacy fight but a lot easier than a Floyd fight
true, but pac already beat JMM 2x. plus arum wants jmm to fight valero before he can get a shot at pac.
you guys? dogz ain't no fan boy avatars here nor fan boy signatures my point was the willingness to fight and the excuses that were made to cover up the times in between. see when you say someone doesn't generate money enough for you then THAT'S the reason you feel me, you don't then flip from 1 excuse to another son that's not the way the game is played. if it was all Belts and straps in this sport then Joshua Clottey would never have dropped his title to face Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito wouldn't have dropped his strap neither to face Miguel Cotto, straps don't mean shit when the guy you beat is a Carlos Baldomir, all you walked away with is the accomplishment, the feat as opposed to the whole glory of beating the worlds best and not just the right titleholders at the right time and weight. THAT'S my overall point about Floyd

u do know that pbf was with arum and tr at the time? Maybe you do but like ther rest of you pbf detractors you over look facts to form your own facts. im goin to start calling u guys Fox News!

I always hated this shit about Floyd and Arum pointed it out, after certain wins he started fighting the lesser guys and then CALLING HIMSELF the best, he slowly started having most of the world agree after countless times ranting off about that and instead of continuing his place as the self proclaimed best he takes on lesser caliber opponents, he takes on the Judah's, Mitchell's and Baldomir's as opposed to the Cotto's, Margarito's and Mosley's and uses shitty ass excuses to back his shit up. you don't fight Cotto or Margarito because you don't want to do business with Arum again? bull f*ckin shit Floyd, that is 100% BULLSHIT and it pisses me off he thinks the fans of the sport are gullible enoughto believe that horse shit, it boils down to fighting man and this is a profession where the best fight the best regardless of that crap..
many people don't know this but he was willing to fight Cotto at 140 when Cotto was BARELY a draw compared to what he can generate now and he was literally struggling to make weight, had that dried up bone looking face in some fights there and overall was visibly not on that kind of level to be facing someone like that. you see the game here? it didn't matter that Cotto was with Top Rank when he was clearly not a threat to Floyd, where he could barely even make regulation to fight let alone perform correctly, it didn't matter that Cotto was with Bob Arum then right? then when Cotto moves up to Welterweight, blows out Quintana and Judah and shows he's 100% a better fighter Floyd suddenly doesn't want to do business with Arum. what was the other excuse again? oh yeah it was that Cotto doesn't generate enough revenue huh, well Floyd back when you willing to face him he was not even a fraction of the name he was when you were supposed to fight him so if he don't make enough sales for you now he made even less for you prior when you wanted a piece of him..
I like how Arum put that man, I really f*ckin do man it's about times someone blatantly calls out this mans bullshit

if pac beats hatton, pac-floyd would be the biggest fight of this decade; but I can see this fight falling apart because of floyd's crazy purse demands.
now bob arum and oscar de la hoya have floyd by the balls... they co-promote manny pacquaio... to be honest, the fight would be interesting but floyd would make it boring with his style of fighting... there are much better stylistic matchups =... cotto-pacquiao would be a war, but i see cotto knocking pacquiao out... mosley-pacquiao would be an easy win for pacuqiao. and there are the upcoming fighters like gamboa, ortiz, amir khan etc. so manny really doesn't need floyd.
i really don't think manny worries about proving himself against floyd.
put it this way. if floyd comes back , at minimum , floyd would want 50-50 right? even if floyd is the bigger money fight......would manny make more money fighting for 50% against floyd or 70% in big money fights elsewhere?
and even if it's not all about the money , which is bull because as a pro it is ALL about the money , could we say anything really bad about manny fighting say cotto or marquez or shane?
would manny even look bad if he were to not fight floyd and fight cotto , mosley or marquez instead?
floyd might be the former #1 p4p fighter and the greater fighter of those 3 , but a third against his arch rival marquez or a belt in a 6th weight division against mosley or cotto ain't exactly gonna hurt manny's legacy.
Oh I agree... I think beating those 3 would only continue to build Mannys legacy... they would be great fights and he would make a lot of $$$ doing so..
But I still stand by, people want to be the first to beat Floyd... I think people still believe Floyd is the fighter to beat... And I think Manny would actually want to fight him, money definitely has something to do with it, but the idea of being the first to beat Floyd, is definitely enticing...
But I would still be greatly satisfied if Manny decided to fight Cotto, Mosley, Marquez... Great fights... all 3 of them...
Good post and I agree with all of it... but I think most fighters including Manny, still think Floyd is the man to beat, even if hes semi retired... I think most fighters think he is still the man to beat, and if they can beat Floyd then they will truly be the best in the game.
I think Manny wants to prove that against Floyd.
But I agree with you, as far as the promotors are concerned... it's the last thing they would want...
They could make way more money fighting Mosley, Marquez, or Cotto... with a good chance of winning.. rather then face floyd for one big payday, and a good possibility of losing...
Not that Mosley marquez or Cotto couldnt beat Pacman, they sure as hell could, I see Floyd as a bigger threat though as far as being able to really beat Pacman.
Although, it would be the first fight I wouldnt bet on Floyd to win...

I've always said we should cut the charade of the weigh-in and skip to where the fighters actually come in at fight night. Both won't be 140 by fight-night, so why bother unless you are hoping for unhealthy fighter(s). Both fought at 147/WW before so I don't see the problem as far as weight.
Making the fight with Arum as promoter....might be a different story.
This way, if the fight is held at 147/WW, Floyd can fight Pac and then fight Cotto and/or Mosley.
floyd won't have a belt at 147.
pac's people will ask for it to be at 140 watch.
pac and then cotto for floyd? uncle bob will NEVER let that happen.
golden boy wouldn't want that either.
floyd is in a bad position. jmm , shane , cotto , pac are all either top rank or gbp fighters.
Mr boat buyer should fight Pac at 140 or not fight him at all. Or if Arum truly ain't the obstacle he's supposed to be, how about Cotto at 147 if he beats Clottey and a SSM fight don't happen for either one of em.

His relationship with Bob HASNT improved since he turned down fights with Margarito and Cotto due to him "not being able to do business with Arum"
I wonder what his excuse will be if he signs to fight Pac. Arum just clearly told Floyd to "go fuk himself" Surely that wont patch things up between the 2.
i wouldn't be surprised if mayweather-pacquiao never happens.
1. pacquiao has big money fight options elsewhere.
2. pacquiao is co-promoted by golden boy and top rank. wouldn't it be in top rank's and golden boy's interest for pacquiao-marquez 3 , pacquiao-cotto , pacquiao-mosley?
3. if pacquiao beats hatton he'd have won titles at 112 , 122 , 126 , 130 , 135 and 140. that's 5. a title at 147 would be historic to tie with oscar's titles in 6 divisions. floyd has no title at 147. cotto and shane does have a 147 title , and again , shane and cotto are promoted by pac's promoters.
4. roach is no fool. floyd matchup would be tougher for manny than say cotto or aging mosley or a slowing down marquez. for roach as manny's advisor , manny has a better chance winning those fights than against floyd who could be a stylistic nightmare for manny.
unless floyd makes MAJOR concessions as far as money , weight class , etc. , i can see a mayweather-pacquiao fight not happening.

Fight should happen next year if they both win.
I wouldnt be surprised if it happens this year... Im not one to listen to rumors and reports from other people.. but the way things have been sounding, Floyd wants to fight this year...
