I keep hearing that Chavez Jr. is a bum and will never even be a good fighter over and over in this place. There's a few things that I don't understand about that argument.
First off, he's young, very young. Some even say younger than the 21 years old he claims to be. Some close to him have admitted he can't be that old and is more like 19 yrs old but needed to start making money so the birth certificate was falsified.
Second, he never had an amateur career. He has about 40 fights so far and is undefeated. Granted it's with lesser opposition but this is sort of his "amateur career" he's going through right now.
There's a few things I see in him that are very good. He has very good fundamentals, you can tell he was taught very well by his father and fights a lot like him. He seems to have a good chin like his father and throws a great left hook to the body. He's tall and long for his weight, something his father never had.
There's a few bad things. He looks inexperienced at times and his defense needs major work. Even though he's tall and long he doesn't use them to his advantage and likes to brawl with his opponents and takes that advantage away from himself at times.
I would never say he is going to be as great as his father but I think people are jumping the gun when it comes to him being a "bum". I think with more fights under his belt and his body growing, he could be a GOOD fighter, maybe even contend for a belt.
What do you guys think?
They are going to throw him into tougher fights very soon. They have to because people are growing tired of watching him in the same old fights.
I feel bad for the kids because he's under so much pressure and carrying that name around isn't fair.
It's like being the son of Michael Jordan and expected to be a great basketball player.
You feel bad for a fighter who would have 3 losses right now and wouldnt even be allowed on ESPN2 if his name wasnt Chavez? Really? Chavez is the only reason he is on PPV, or even known by anyone. He is the Robbie Kneviel of boxing.
Well, he doesn't seem to have that big of a power. With all his youth he has hit opponents yet he cant take them out. He isn't that quick so no big advantage there. I've heard he is 23 so while he's young, but not that young. Perhaps his brother will be better.
I'll finish this thread title:
Don't count out Chavez Jr. just yet...
....his not gonna step up the competition any time soon
Ugh
why wouldn't he? Do you normally just blurt things out without having anything to base your opinion on.
I'm glad you ask , see he is already 39-0-1 and six year of PRO carrer have past and yet he has NEVER fought with a top 10 Contender at his weightclass NOR has he EVER fought ANYBODY that we know.
So if it look like sh!t, smell like sh!t the Sh!t it is!!!!!:tapedshut
if he's not ready after 50 fights...i guess he will never be.

I wouldn't call him a bum but I don't think that he's a good fighter. And I also don't blame those who call him a bum because of all the hype surrounding this kid. He is slow, he was no power and his defense is horrible. I just can't see him improving that much.
He wouldn't be doing it for FREE he would be getting paid, just not quite as much. Look at his PPV numbers, they are all very small, 10k, 20k tops. The investment to put in work now on free TV, or at least HBO/Showtime is that he could build his name and fan base and do PPV's 250,000, 500,000, etc. in the future. At this rate he's always going to be doing very low PPV numbers. That's bad business. Look at all the top money makers, all time - oscar de la hoya, mike tyson, evander holyfield. You know what they have in common? They all started out on free TV.
Well, we're actually talking management style.
"He could/should be making lots more PPV's....IF......"
You're probably right about the potential of Jr making more, but going back to my last point, if they haven't stopped doing these PPV events, it's because they're already making a profit if not big $$$.
Yea, DLH, Tyson, Holyfield all started out on free tv to establish their fan base to become PPV draws.
Chavez is already a PPV draw. EVEN THOUGH, he could have more, his team wouldn't be doing this if his 'minor' 10 or 20k wasn't a profit.
Also: We're viewing Jr from a boxing-fan-perspective - "why entertainment does he offer me"
I don't think that defines how good a fighter is.
He owes us nothing.
It's easy to say this kid is a bum and for the record, I don't think that he will be a great fighter but to call him a bum........?
As far as the PPV, it's easy to dissagree with them when you have a job and that's his job, the kid has ZERO amatuer experience and this is how he makes money. The money he is making in boxing is very good and I don't blaim the Chavez family for trying to make a living, you don't like it, don't buy it.
What do you want the Chavez family to do? Go into nuclear physics? They fight, thats what they do.
If he cant take the criticism he shouldn't be headlining PPV cards asking people to pay to see him being taken to the limits by journeymen. He belongs on Azteca, ESPN FNF, maybe even SHObox or BAD.
It's all a business with this kid, from his dad to his promoter. You only call out DLH to make money not to prove yourself. He should be calling out Martinez, Forrest, Angulo, Kirkland if he wants to make a statement.
Arum is like Billy Mays selling snake oil! He wants people to buy a bullshit product and not complain. He should just give it away for free and build a customer base for it!
He is a bucket of suck. He just isn't skilled. He performs poorly vs very questionable fighters. I mean... he doesn't even jab or use his height. He leans into punches that are thrown. He backs up instead of pressuring the smaller man. He will never be world class. Even his dad gets pissed off at how he fights.
hes ok, I dont expect too much from him but I DID see some improvements in his last fight, so hes progressing a little.
Hes fun to watch and has a big following. Id rather him headline a card fighting unknowns with pretty records than have Roy Jones headline a card fighting a washed up fighter who didnt even bother to train.
besides, most fighters really put it together around 25, unless youre exceptional. look at almost any fighters career and youll see they had hiccups along the way.
just dont expect to much out of Chavez Jr, and you wont be dissapointed with him. hes just a fun to watch fighter who has a strong fanbase, and should end up beating some top ten guys later on.
and whats more, its not like hes the only attraction in his ppvs. the Latin Fury ones are actually pretty stacked cards with good names in them.
What do you mean by later on? I don't see him beating any top ten guys anytime soon, unless he improves something drastic. And as far as the Latin Fury card, Jr should not be headlining when you have exceptional fighters like Montiel and Soto in Championship fights on the same card. Just my take.

Ok, if he is still up and coming then fair play to him and take all the practice and easy fights he wants.
But dont put him on ****ing TV all the time when he isnt that good and he is fighting some bum just because his name is chavez. If he sucks and his opponent sucks, wait until he steps it up to televise it.

By judging him on how he does against bums!! If he struggles against no names and bums, he's not going to do better against A & B level fighters.
I was joking about manfredo (he is a joke).
Kirkland dominating Julio is a much, much better accomplishment than anything chavez has done. Julio KO's Chavez in fact.
But again, my whole thing with chavez is his PPV bullshit. If he's going to charge his fans PPV money, then he NEEDS to fight quality opposition. Nevermind what kirkland/angulo are doing, they have been working their ways up to the top the right way.
I wouldn't be so hard on the kid if he was earning his way like everyone else, which is fighting your way to the top and doing shows like espn, hbo, showtime, etc.
And who has he struggled against?? He had a draw early in his acareer and came back and easily won the second fight. He struggled against Vanda in the first fight and then boxed him silly in a one sided rematch. So who is he struggling against? Kirkland had a solid win against a very average Julio who he himself has made a good career of fighting the same caliber of fighters that Junior has been beating. Come on the guys biggest wins are against Isha Smith and K-9. Not exactly world beaters either.
And why do you people think that somehow junior decides what fights are put on PPV and which ones are not? He's not a fuking promoter he's a fuking Boxer. Bob Arum is the one who decides whats being put on PPV and whats not. Is it really that hard to comprahend?
I was using the thread starters age of "21". In which case that fight hadn't happened.
Should have looked up JC jr's age myself, to see he was 23.
and thanks I like to think of myself as a funny dude.
Chavez Sr was already a World Champion and ripping through top ten fighters in his early 20's. With Junior's rate of progress I don't see him winning a Championship anytime soon (if at all).
Yes because 1 or 2 actual challenges is 1 or 2 challenges more than Chavez has faced. Not only comparing resume, comparing what I see int he ring. Chavez doesn't have good defense and doesn't really have any great strengths. He's an ok fighter with a legendary name. That's it!!
I'm no fan of Sergio Mora by any means but he isn't that bad, he has decent skills. That's actually a pretty good fight though, Mora vs Chavez. Would definitely be the biggest test of Chavez' career.
Peter Manfredo KO's Chavez round 1.
If he has never had a challange then how can you determin how good or bad he is? That makes no sense!
And then Sergio Mora a guy who soundly beat Peter Manfredo is a lesser challange to Chavez than Manfredo?
Maybe my biggest thing is that Junior is performing just as good against this level of opposition as guys like Angulo, and Kirkland. Nevermind that Kirkland and Angulo are both much older and have long amature careers.
It's not like these two guys are beating anyone else of note either.
He's a bum until he fights and beats someone with a pulse. And he actually has to win the fight. Not just get the "nod." Nobody would bitch about him if he wasnt having his "learning" fights on PPV and getting so many of you wack jobs buying them just because you want to support a Chavez. If he needs to fight 60 cab drivers before he is ready for anyone in the top 1000 then let him do it quietly. Stop hyping someone who wont step up for another 20 fights, and stop building him up when he does nothing to warrent it. Once he steps up and doesnt get blown out of the water, then we can talk. Otherwise you know he is ONLY doing this to build a record that looks great, but is against nothing (I wonder who else has done that...hmmm.) Let me ask you Jr fans this, what is he learning from fighting the same type of shitty fighter over and over again?
Everything you just said can described almost every major contender in the junior middle weight division.
it's not like any of these contenders are fighting world beaters for christ sake and you seem more upset about his fights being on PPV.
