James Toney is the most overrated fighter of the past 20 years.
- He has two losses to Sam Peter, who has shown us his limitations in later fights. He lost to people like Drake Thadzi who is not a world-beater, and twice to Montel Griffin...
- Toney should have more losses on his record: he was recently given a gift against Fres Oquendo, and then there was the fight with Danny Batchelder, where he received more underserved rounds from the judges. Dave Tiberi was robbed in his fight with Toney, even James himself now admits he should have lost that one.
- James has twice been caught cheating with steroids, after the Ruiz fight and after his Batchelder bout.
James Toney was schooled by Roy Jones, and losing to Roy isn't so bad. But when we consider how easily a past prime version of Joe Calzaghe defeated a slightly more past prime version of Jones, it seems obvious to me that a prime Joe Calzaghe would have schooled a prime James Toney!
I don't think Toney was overrated, But I think it's dumb when people criticize Calzaghe resume and not Toney's. I would have to go with Calzaghe workrate in this one. Cal 12ud.
There have been about 3000 threads bashing Joe Calzaghe. A dozen posters here have spent endless hours to discrediting Joe.
This is only about the second or third saying Toney is overrated.
lmao calzaghe wasn't past prime, he looked LESS physically capable even against Lacy.
Jones wasn't past prime, he was SHOT. Don't kid yourself. We saw how easily Tarver knocked out Jones to. Calzaghe didn't come close to that.
Toney in his prime would have schooled Calzaghe. He's definitely old and past his prime, but the man would have been too slick for Calzaghe.
**** off the only person who would school calzaghe is roy jones period.

Yeah cuz every non eastern European fighter is overrated.
If Toney would of taken his career more seriously and been more disciplined he would of been an all time top ten fighter. Calz and his people know he wasnt that good thats why he never fought the best. Both fighters in their prime Toney wins hands down.
he was that good moron just his resume should been alot better.

haha wow...calzaghe would have been stopped in 5 rounds or LESS against toney at super middleweight..yea calzaghe is very good but he is NO james toney..and from what i see on here Toney is very underrated on this forum and in the boxing media..he never gets any respect for what hes done throughout his career..geuss you can partially blame that on his big mouth haha...but seriously.
Calzaghe has never lost.
The objective is to win like Calzaghe always did, rather than to lose, like Toney has so many times!
Even Sam Peter clearly outboxed Toney in the second fight. :lol1:
d objective is to win against fellow greats in their prime...
not against tomato cans & out of prime fighters...
I can't even believe you would post such a shit thread Tunney. I know you don't like Toney but you know he isn't comparable to Jeff Lacy.:jerk: You get caught up in this back and forth shit too much. If anyone says something you don't like about one of your favorite fighters, you go on a rampage making threads like this.

james toney overated ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
to me u cant even put james toney in the same sentance as calzaghe, calzaghe is good but his style isnt too entertaining his fight with hopkins was shady and i think hopkins had a bad night but even if he hadnt i still believe it would of been a close decision, in his fight with jones, he (jones) was well past it and you tell from watching that he has noway near the same handspeed, footwork, reactions ad unorthadoxy he did before he moved up 4 his fight with ruiz, calzaghe might be past it as well but through his career he didnt face the kind of opposition jones did and could you ever imagin him stepping up to fight a heavyweight ? prime jones vs prime calzaghe (lacy fight) jones has a harder more accurate, meaningfull punches and speed i could see calzaghe being cleary outpointed or possibly stopped. n aswell the cut jones got stopped him doing as well as he could of but he still would of lost when they fought for the reasons i said before.
u can mention james toney's losses but most of them were his own fault for being unprofesional e.g not training proply, eating too much, losing weight too fast before fights. i dont think toney needed or ment to take steroids (due to his arm injury befor the ruiz fight) to help him in heavyweight division as he doesnt rely on strength to win fights its mainly technique and timing and wearing down opponents, using there own power against them in the heavyweight division. as well toney has won world titles in everyweight up from middleweight and has stayed at heavyweight unlike jones. he's never ducked a fighter unlike jones and calzaghe. alot of the close decisons he had where because his body was so drained e.g. tiberi, toney won the fight against reggie johnson and it was a much better reggie johnson that fought roy jones a few years later. a well trained and prepared toney was against iran barkley where toney destoyed him. he fought mike mccallum 3 times winning 2 drawing 1, mccallum was 1 of the most underated and ducked fighters in boxing history ! although he was past him prime fighting toney and i dont think toney was at his best for those fights. the fight with jones was a far from fit toney. had he of been prepared i think it would of been very close, although jones would never trade with toney, try n fight on the inside, or go into the ropes, in the fight jones literally ran around him outpointing him and it made a boring fight. prime toney vs prime jones i think could of gone eithr way, they would both be very hard to hit clean, toney having the edge in power and jones having the edge in fitness as he would be hard to trap in a corner or against the ropes. the fight could go either way i doubt there would be any knockouts, toney having better skills but jones being the suprime athlete, toneys boxing skills are second to none and when hes fit he really is special, jus watch his fight with evander holifield, also he definatly won the 1st peter fight should of never had to of fought him again, where he came in not looking as good as he did in the 1st fight, probly due to a new diet of low carbs by that billy blanks guy, but no excuses he lost fair n square second time. i would love to see toney win the heavyweight title of a major contender and then retire on top but it remains to be seen.
prime toney vs calzage at supermiddle or middle would be really interesting as toney never faced any1 in the lighter weights he fought at with calzaghes workrate, calzaghe never faced ny1 with toney's master boxing skills, the only 1 comeing close was bernard hopkins who landed all the meaningfull punches in the fight however calzaghe outworked him which was why the fight was so close. calzaghe wouldnt be able to wobble james toney even if 1 of his shots lands clear, toney has far more power and better timing, would make calzaghe miss with most of his punches although the judges mite award calzaghe points on workrate, i could see toney winning split decision or late round knockout as calzaghe would become increasingly careless, frustrated and open.
this is prime toney btw, if he comes in unfit, drained than calzaghe would outpoint him on workrate but become very cautious as toney would be looking for the big shots and to get inside. no1's knocked out toney calzaghe would stand no chance. if he does get knocked out in one of his future fights then we'l all no that hes past it but he does need to retire soon. calzaghe hasnt achieved much in comparison to toney apart from his unbeated record, but he wouldn't give hopkins a rematch or fight pavlik so there u go.
James Toney = Jeff Lacy.
He's just another overrated American boxer.
Calzaghe > Toney
How are Toney and Lacy anything alike?
P4P ranked defensive counterpuncher who dominated two weight divisions and an upstart vacant title champion who got dropped off the face of the sport around his 20th fight.
Toney really has turned into a joke over the years. Yeah he's real good at defense but still, GREAT fighters create they own offense, instead of laying back on the ropes for 3 minutes of every round and waiting for your opponent to make one mistake so you land a clean uppercut... Which is why there's such an emphasis on punch output now instead of clean punches....because you got guys like Toney, and it kills the fight. If I'm a judge, I don't care how many different body parts Toney blocks punches with, I'm giving it to the guy who deserves it.
I know prime Toney was much better, but come on he lost to Montell Griffin and got destroyed by Roy...plus his level of opposition other than that isn't exactly legendary... Hopkins for one would've beat him easy.
Good post. :fing02:
