do you give the man respect or not? thats what im wondering. He fought for money, but who doesn't these days. At least he fought Elite fighters time after time, and really, he didn't duck nobody in my opinion. In his prime, he would cause a big problem to any ATG at 147-154.
But how do you see his Boxing career. not his personal life when he wore girl clothes, because that shit is hilarious, but has nothing to do with boxing.
He quit on the stool, but so did Chavez, and Duran quit in the middle of a round, and they are both top 25 ATG in many peoples list.
He did lose a lot of his big fights, but he always performed.
So how do you respect de la hoyas carrer or not? reasons why or why not
The Oscar the put Chavez away twice was a great fighter. No doubts about it. He had everything. Speed. Adaptability. Workrate. And heavy hands. People often forget just how hard a hitter Oscar was in his early days. Which makes his pathetic showing against Manny all the more unpleasant. In his prime, Oscar could have beaten TWO Pacs in the same ring at once.
ATG. But he needs to quit - yesterday.
Oscar had a fantastic career, he faced every legit opponet that was anywhere near his division.
People like to shit on him for dropping the ball in some of his biggest fights, and especially the Pac loss.
But facts are facts.
What weight would Oscar and Trinidad fight at? I mean, realistically, it is a guy who fought at welterweight in his last fight against a guy who fought at LHW in his last fight.
Makes little to no sense.
Mosley would dice Oscar's ass to shreds at this stage. He shows he still has it and Oscar just doesn't, at all.
Ahh of course, I forgot the Jones fight was at such a heavy weight. Still Oscar fought B Hop who's now a light heavy, I daresay Trinidad could and would be willing to make a catchweight around the middle to super middleweight.
It's more just an idea if either of them wanted one more fight and pay day it makes sense.
Respect him but didn't find him to be that good, you couldn't call him a journeyman but in reality he lost to most of the top flight opposition he faced.
I'd like to see him take on Trinidad or Mosley and finish. Probably Trinidad as they've both looked past it and have a score to settle.

Hahahahaha, so true and if I can use a Lamply Greatest Hits word...."Succinctly" put.(from oscars greatest hits) As biased as Lampley can be, boxing just wouldn't be the same without him for me.
The boxing moment I have seen more than any other is Lewis-Rahman II KO... it's a tight KO, but I mostly keep doing it so I can hear Lampley go, "BOOM!".
I thought it was pretty clear for Quartey too. He won so many early rounds so convincingly, I thought it was ballgame on the scorecards, but... whatever.
Yeah, that was a tight quote. It basically was that he was a huge name, with his Olympic win and could have made stacks of cheese by fighting anyone, but instead he took the biggest challenge everytime and that's why we have such a legendary career to look back on.
The ODLH Greatest Hits before that made me laugh though... it had Lampley saying his catch phrases from over the years.
Oscar with a barrage of punches!
Oscar catches him with a straight right hand!
A CLASSIC DE LA HOYA LEFT HOOK!
OSCAR DE LA HOYA!
The way Lampley gets so excited sometimes is just groundbreaking to my life.

I really didn't think Oscar/Quartey was close...I thought it was clear as day that Ike won. But to each his own.
In regards to Oscar's career, Lampley puts it great in Oscar's greatest hits. He says something like(I'm paraphrasing) "He could have cherry picked his opponents but chose to take on the most challenging opponents he could."
And it's so true. That's why you have to respect him. The thing with Oscar is that Oscar vs. Savorduhflavor would have made him millions. Yet he went out of his way take on massive challenges when he was the one person in the business that didn't need too. That's why I begrudge him the Pac fight, and why I think it sucks that that'll be one of the things he's most remembered for. It's seriously such a shame.

I respect that he fought mostly everyone he was supposed to.
I'm just not fond of some of the decisions that went his way.
As for his promotional career,
at this point I'm disappointed in the guy who said he was going to change things.
All that has changed is higher prices for his events.
To be fair, I've seen people score it for Trinidad and Mosley 2 as well (not just the official judges).
I thought there was no way Quartey could have lost their fight.
Whitaker didn't do enough to make a true robbery claim, but... it was definitely close.
I have never seen anyone score the Sturm fight for ODLH though... except the 3 official judges. Even Oscar's post-fight interview screamed that he knew he lost... even if he said he thought he won at the end after demonizing his performance for 5 straight minutes.
That is all well and good and I am not denying any of that. All I am saying is that there is no way in hell either the Oscar-Ike or Oscar-Pernell fights should be referred to as robberies. Just no way.
LOL. We call the Pernell and Ike fights gifts now? Wow. Close fights that could have gone either way, sure. But gifts? GTFOH.

Nothing but respect for the opposition he has faced and I could tell you straight up, that no fighter in this era could have possibly gone threw his resume undefeated. He may have gotten gifts (Strum, Ike, Whitaker) and robbed (Tito, SSM II) but he was very competative in those bouts

It's definitely in between.
There are idiots who say that he lost every big fight and doesn't have that much of a career. He beat Camacho, Chavez twice, Whitaker, Quartey, Vargas, Leija, etc.
There are also people that swear he has been robbed up and down but ignore decisions like Whitaker and Quartey, which are just as close as some of the ones he lost.
He's a good fighter, but he is a bit limited, and did lose as many big fights as he won.
The only thing that is flawless about him is that he always, ALWAYS fought the best fighters regardless of what was going on with his career.
