Seriously why should a fighter risk injury or death for a few beer swilling retards in the stands?
I don't see why a fighter has to risk injury to somehow prove his mascualinity when the sheer fact that he's getting in the ring makes him more of a man than 99% of the Earth's population.
Some of you guys need to realize the boxing isn't and shouldn't be a life a death struggle. It's a fuking sport and even if every boxing fan in the world fell over and died there would still be people in gym's learning the sweet science out of sheer love for the sport.
Grow up people.
Robinson was well ahead on the scorecards when he collasped from the heat. That's different froma fighter getting his ass kicked and quitting. I don't like to use the word "quit" when a fighter can't continue. It's a BS term and Robinson didn't do anything like what Duran did. You can't compare the two in any way.
Exactly.
Trying your hardest till you're hardly able to stand up to the point where you feint is quitting?
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but is that not the very OPPOSITE of quitting?
I had a feeling that is what he had in mind. That is not quitting. That is heat exhaustion. Big difference.
Exactly. Some people either don't know the difference or just pretend they don't know.

Watch the video....
I did (although with the sound turned off), plus I have documentaries on SRR which talk about it. I thought you were saying the ref stopped it at the request of Ray? Maybe I misunderstood your other post.

Perhaps I did not make myself clear enough.
What I was saying is that there are a lot of people who believe that boxers should "fight to death" and that quitting on your stool is "dishonourable".
As an example, Max Kellerman recently stated that he could never consider Israel Vasquez a great fighter because Vasquez quit in a fight.
This is a bit silly considering that many of the past greats have quit on their stool, including Roberto Duran, Willie Pep, even the toughest of the toughest the great Sam Langford.
Robinson too, had to give up a fight he was winning because he was near death from exhaustion.
I hesitate to use the word "quit" in situations such as this because a lot of people think as if it's cowardly. If you want to see a quitter then you should watch Hasim Rahman-Mario Cawley.
Cool, thanks, man for responding (and uploading the clip). I agree the word "quit" can be problematic. People list Vasquez, DLH and Guerrero all as quitters now, but each case is different. Some people just lump it all together without distinction.
Can you please clarify what your post means? Because it sounds like you're calling Robinson a quitter without actually calling him a quitter.
Did you watch the clip of the end of the fight? Robinson didn't quit, his body did. He had no choice in the matter, his body shut down. Saying that Robinson quit is like saying someone who dies of a heart attack is a quitter because they were too pussy to live without oxygen and blood.
And what's there to think about? Please explain.
I uploaded the clip anyway.
This topic isn't about Robinson quitting, it's about the fact that even the great ones have quit in the ring.

If your referring to the Maxim fight, which I am familiar with. He didn't quit, the ref stopped it....
The story is Ray didn't want to come out for the 14th round. Heat exhaustion was the cause. Where dd you hear he stopped it?

SRR did his all to try and continue but he was too weak and his punch was no hard then Paulie's. That is not quiting, he passed out...so your off, where as Cotto took a serious beating (By the way, I don't blame him for quiting...he gave it his all) and did not want to take more punishment. I'm not gonna jump on Cotto and I NEVER did jump on him for quiting, I respect the effort he put
Again man the word quit isn't negative unless you make it a negative thing.
Fighters can quit with honor too!
Really? If thats true then Manny must still have major power at 147. To me it looked like Oscar wasn't really hurt until the seventh round came along, and Oscar was being pushed into the corners and brutalized.
Yes, seriously. It must have been in in interview or something. I will try to find it.
I do believe Pac carries his power well in the higher weight classes.

I think you should focus less on the word and realize that most boxers quit honerably.
Honor and self preservation is all that matters in the sport of boxing.
In a sense he did "quit". Yes he may have died if he had continued but he still "quit" according to some because boxers are supposed to fight to the death or whatever.
Now obviously in the minds of any sensible fight fan Robinson did not quit nor was he a coward but it's something to think about.

Robinson was WINNING the fight he quit in..
Chavez and Duran QUIT when they were LOSING.
Try again mexican.
Chavez was actually cut in a close fight and Duran is from Panama so why bring him up if I'm mexican.
Seriously if you could read beyond a 4th grade level maybe you would have noticed that my post was never intended to discredit Mr. Robinson but to infact defend him and everyother fighter that retired on their stool.
Rican Fighters
Don't try to bring down Ray Robinson for Oscar De La Hoya, quitting.
Why would you have rocky martinez listed instead of victor ortiz? And do puerto rican box fans like any other boxers other than puerto ricans?
I read somewhere that Pac dazed him with some of the first meaningful punches he threw in that fight. basically he was hurt from the very first round.

Could he atleast swung at manny? He didn't he just took shots and quit. Culero Culero Culero

maybe Manny was beating him to the Punch which happened over and over again.
If you fought Manny I bet you wouldn't get off a punch either.
