I wouldnt say it is a pointless thread...if you love boxing I think it is interesting and believe me some of this stuff is not "googable" LOL...and why would u want to google for answers? Either you know or you do not.
As for headgears, they became mandatory in the early 80's...I know as late as 1983 Mark Breland fought an international meet without headgear, I have the photo
Robert Salters beat Riddick at the 88 Trials but Bowe reversed that in the box-off and made the team...his real claim to fame, though -I was there for it- was when he STOPPED Bowe at the 1988 US Championships
Who ever has that much time on their hands..my heart goes out to you...lol
read the question......then answer it!......maybe 5 minutes max......they aint that hard if you're REALLY a follower of the sport!

Bonus Question: Who is Clinton Mitchell of Brooklyn, N.Y. and what is his claim to fame?
Robert Salters Beat Riddick Bowe in the 88 Trails, I've got that fight on tape.
Naw, it would be like losing in sparring. Who cares when there is nothing at stake? That's the difference. I'm sure that allot of fighters have lost in sparring but won in the fight they were sparring for. See the relativeness?
I wouldn't compare an amateur fight to sparring, maybe an exhibition contest which were popular up until the Ali era.
Possibly, but it didn't go down as a pro loss because it was not a professional prizefight , which makes the loss irrelevant. Much like Roy Jones' and Joe Calzaghe's ametuer losses. Capiche'?
Obviously but the difference is that Marciano fought and lost in the amateurs after he had turned pro. Marciano's 49 straight victories in a row is a legendary record in boxing so when it comes up that he had actually lost a boxing match after turning pro, it's going to be talked about.
Of course it's ultimately meaningless because no records are ever going to be changed nor should they but it's a subject for debate.
I'd imagine that there would be some controversy if Calzaghe had lost amateur fights after turning pro, for example.
I asumed the still wore headgear in the ametuers in the 40's. Am I wrong?
Even if they didn't, I'm sure Marciano would have beat the piss out of the guy had he got a lil' experience under his belt.
Headgear is a new invention (in fights). I think it was in the late eighties or early nineties they became mandatory to help separate the am's from the pro's following fatalities in the pro game.

No headgear in those days.
He would've won in his prime but it's true that he lost to Wallace after making his pro debut.
Pointless, anyone can google this stuff. FAILED THREAD.
Not so sure about that. A lot of this information can't be found even on the internet.
Try to google all the answers and you'll see.
No, I dont believe that to be true...Marciano lost to Coley in a publicized tournament as an amateur...if he had turned pro beforehand everybody in the area would have known, including whoever it was that fought Rocky, surely they would have stepped up to say he was already a pro
Wasn't the tournament in March 1948 though? Marciano made his pro debut under the name "Rocky Mack" in 1947.

Marciano's amateur record:
1. April 15, 1946 Henry Lester DQ
AAU Championship Tournament
Portland, Oregon August, 1946
2. unknown KO 1
3. unknown KO 1
4. Joe DeAngelis L 3 August 23, 1946
Golden Gloves Tournament
Lowell, Massachusetts January 1948
5 unknown KO 1
6 unknown KO 1
7 Charlie Mortimer KO 1
Golden Gloves All-East Coast Championships
New York, New York March 1948
8. Coley Wallace L 3 March 1948
9. Bob Girard L 3
10. Joe Sidlaskis KO 1
AAU Olympic tryouts in Boston
11. Fred Fischera KO
12. George McGinnis W 3
I believe the story goes that Marciano had already turned professional when he lost to Coley Wallace in the amateurs. This is sometimes brought up when discussing how meaningful Marciano's undefeated record truly is.
Wallace later turned pro but had little success aside from playing as Joe Louis in a movie made about the Brown Bomber named "The Joe Louis Story".
