Floyd Mayweather's Back In The Gym.
By David A. Avila
A few of the best prizefighters in the world today have all mentioned one fighter who they’d like to challenge. That person has been retired for more than a year and his name is Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr.
“He’s the best pound for pound fighter and I’d like to fight him,” said Juan Manuel Marquez just after his knockout victory a week ago over Juan Diaz.
For months the rumors have filtered that Mayweather was broke, that he’s healing an injured shoulder, or that he’s busy with hip-hop. Boxing is not an option.
Basically they’re all rumors until now.
Mayweather was seen sparring in his own Las Vegas gym this past Friday March 6 by a source of mine. If a fighter has an injured shoulder he wouldn’t be sparring. If he’s retired, then why put on the gloves?
It could be Mayweather is prepping for a return to boxing and a few more mega fights.
The last time I called his front man Leonard Ellerbe, I was told that Mayweather is too busy promoting Lil Wayne and other hip-hop acts. Then a day later Ellerbee told another boxing writer that he could be interested in returning to boxing. Calls to Ellerbee were not returned on Monday.
Aside from Marquez, a number of top prizefighters like Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley and Paul Williams have openly challenged or expressed a wish to fight Mayweather?
Why?
Is it because they see the former pound for pound king as a weak link?
Before Mayweather hung up the gloves after stopping England’s Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton in December 2007, he had beaten Oscar De La Hoya and Zab Judah and was almost unanimously declared the best fighter on the planet.
But along came Pacquiao and Marquez who have moved up several weight divisions and proven good enough to handle fighters above 140 pounds. The stage is set.
“We could fight at 140 pounds,” said Marquez.
Pacquiao, who has a tough fight against Hatton on May 2, has not mentioned Mayweather’s name recently out of respect to his British opponent. But his convincing win over De La Hoya was something the Las Vegas fighter could not do.
Recently, Pomona, California’s resident speedster Mosley, surprisingly blitzed by former welterweight kingpin Antonio Margarito. Many had seen Sugar Shane as past his prime but his performance against the Mexican slugger dazzled boxing fans. And, he has always declared a willingness to fight Mayweather.
Back in January 2000, following a Mosley victory over Willy Wise in Las Vegas, an after-party for the Pomona fighter was attended by Mayweather in the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel. Mosley was signing autographs on a table when Mayweather walked up.
“When are you going to fight me Shane?” asked Mayweather in front of a dozen or more onlookers.
Mosley answered “whenever you want to fight.”
Now would be a perfect time for that fight.
They could fight sometime in June and the winner could then fight whoever wins between Hatton and Pacquiao in September or October.
j i hope this is right but i wont believe it till he comes out and says it himself, ive heard so many rumours at this stage so!!!
mayweather v cotto
mayweather v manny
mayweather v mosley
mayweather v jmm
all crazy good fights
mayweather is still p4p king!!!!!
This is good news, not that we already knew he would be coming back but if he is in the gym, then he is coming back sooner rather than later and he will be in good shape when they finally make a fight.
I just watched the Hatton-PBF fight recently and at the end of it he said he wouldnt fight in 2008 or 2009. There were some conflicting quotes but first he said he wasnt retiring just taking a break.
Add to that his father said in an interview that they are actively looking for fights for PBF at this time and that he will be back.
So I would expect him to be back in the Fall, especially if Pac wins the Hatton fight. If not against Mosley or Cotto.
Come back Floyd, and fight Cotto. Margarito has been disgraced, so forget him.
Means nothing prob just keeping in shape, Working out is something he has done his whole life bet its just habbit, think i remember lewis say the same thing when he was spotted in the gym.
But i saw that freddy roach working out on oscar manny 24 7 i say comeback. I would pay to see him fight mayweather senior . lol
Does everyone remember weeks ago when I told you guys Floyd is already training, and a comeback is on the horizon? Many people didnt believe me cause I couldnt divulge my source.
BOOOYAAAAA!!!!!!:cool2::cool2::cool2:
Seriously, whats your source, and if he is coming back, who he fighting?
I saw Floyd trainin' for a comeback=I saw Tupac in Jamaica......:cool2:
Nah man. Floyd really is coming back. He did a good job of convincing people he was done for good, much like Leonard and Ali, but it just like them its BS.
If he does come back,I hope its against the welterweights.I know that people get excited about Manny's victories and JMM.But truth be told, a fight with Mayweather would be a mismatch.I know that's tough for some people to except but its the truth. That's coming from a person that doesn't even care much for Mayweather. The man is in his prime. He is a defensive master with speed and pop in his punches. He has a good chin and when have you ever seen him get tired in a fight? He would tko both JMM and Pac Man. His biggest challenge would be Cotto.Now..that would be a classic. They're both pretty much the same size and there styles would make an action packed fight.Mosley vs Mayweather would also be a classic.Shane's hand speed, power, and experience would make Floyd dig deep for a victory. Its a toss up fight. And if I'm Floyd, I don't even speak the name Paul Williams.Too big of a mountain to climb.Let Pac Man and JMM deal with Bradley and Campble. They will have their hands full with them.
If he actually said "When are we going to fight" to Shane. Then that means he is gonna fight. You dont say those kind of things to a champion unless you mean it.
Negotiation time.
I think you misread. That was back around 2000 when he said that

There are many fighters who spar after retirement just to stay in shape and because they still want to go a couple rounds.. it could mean he is back, it could mean nothing at all.
Like others have said, wait till something is announced before getting your hopes up.
Who gives a shit? He gets nothin form me til he formally announces he's gonna fight. Not lookin for fights, not willin to fight for this much or that much, not considerin so and so, but gonna get in the ring and fight somebody. Til then I wish cats would just ignore his ass.
The Mayweather comeback is a myth, People will still be talking about Floyd coming back when he looks like this:

Seriously, this man has been around boxing his whole life, did anyone think he'd give it up cold turkey? I am not saying he won't return but I would assume he is just doing it for "fun", it is his favorite sport regardless of whether he may say so. He wouldn't have done it since he was 4 if that wasn't the case. Probably doesn't know a life outside of it.
I disagree because your either in or your out. Every great athelete that retired in his "prime" either stayed 100% away from the sport or they ended up coming back. Its ok to do things like that if you were forced to retire because of age, injury, or decreasing skill level but when you retire in your prime then your in or out. All the atheltes that I know of who have stayed retired say that they never picked up the gloves or ball again. However, everyone that came back said they just started messing around and thats what got them back into it. Look at MJ. He was totally out and done. He decided to just shoot around one day and just like that he fell in love again and was back at it. Floyd may go in the gym just to mess around or stay in shape but once he starts sparring then there is no way that he wont want to fight again. The only thing that will keep him out now is not getting the fights he wants but if all things are equal then he's definatly coming back
Just because he's back in the gym, it doesn't mean we'll see him back in the ring. Obviously, it's a possibility. But until it's confirmed bu him or his people, I'll just chalk it upto Floyd getting in a solid workout.
sparring in the gym does not have the aura or provide the same pleasure as being center stage in an arena proving yourself against the best. He can spar all he wants but that itch for the lime light wont be scratched by a sparring partner. He might catch hives from sparring too much... At least from the looks of it, his daddy may be right to say Floyd Jr. is gonna fight again.
i think you are outthinking yourself....
Pacquaio wants floyd...
but for neog. purposes he has to act disinterested so he can bring floyd to the table...and not have floyd just boss the neog... process..
Freddie roach is doing the right thing by saying he is not interested
I was thinking the samething too but lately these guys have been sounding really serious. I kind of think they feel that at 140 they can beat JMM and Floyd will be there anytime. Im also thinking that Roach may be starting to get a little scared of Floyd. At the same time I could see Arum wanting to give Cotto the Pac fight to keep him happy. On the other hand I could just see it being all negotiations as you say. Either way lets hope that Hatton doesnt ruin it by winning, although I do think he has a great chance with Sr.
