Gamboa said it himself in a recent interview. He said it's his style and he won't change it. Actually, he says he has no choice to fight this way, it's part of his strategy. He says most of his opponents (both real fights and sparring) are just kinda scared and just play survival "high defense" mode... So the only way for him to land clean punches is to make them believe he is open so they try to catch him (somtimes it works for them, as we all know) and since he is faster he takes that opportunity to kill them. This make sense, as we saw the only two fighters that went the whole distance with him were Jimenez and Gonzales, both of them pussied out since the beggining and the only thing they did the whole fight was cover their head and run away. Real champs won't do that, so I think it may actually be easier for Gamboa vs people who will try to fight back.
Now, Junma vs Gamboa? Tough pick, almost an impossible one IMO. This could go anywhere. Gamboa is just too quick and powerful so he could easily KO Juanma (this is not personal towards Juanma, Yuri is just too dangerous for anyone). But Juanma has simply a shotgun as strong hand, and even if Gamboa doesn't have a bad chin (which we really don't know yet), Juanma's power is just dangerous to anyone. Gamboa is my first favorite fighter and Juanma my third, I dream about this matchup!
Man if both fighters keep winning this could be built into a big fight say 18 months from now. Gamboa needs to work on his defense but this would be an explosive fight no doubt.
Gamboa to me is overrated,he has been dropped way to much,to ever put him near Juanma, someone might ko him quicker,if he keeps getting caught napping like that!!
JuanMa would break Gamboa in half. Gamboa is WAYYYY to sloppy for a sharp puncher like JuanMa. I mean come on, Gamboa was already on the floor 3 or 4 times against slobs, what do you think will happen if JuanMa catches him on the chin?
Well different weight classes right now. But in the future or if at a catch weight it would be interesting. A more technical and possibly harder puncher in JuanMa vs the faster and bigger Gamboa.
I have a feeling this would be a little big Barrera vs Hamed at this point. Gamboa is a bit reckless in the ring and it could cost him against heavy punchers like JuanMa, Izzy or even Ponce.
If you are sayng right now, Juanma east him alive KO3. Gamboa have bad defense and a china chin.
if you say down the road we have to see, how Juanma and Gamboa develops
I agree. Right now, Juanma in 3 rounds. Gamboa could beat him in 2 years if he gets his defense together.
