Now don't get me wrong, I like Cotto and his very entertaining to watch and currently my favorite fighter right now. But daym are his interview awful, all his answers are systematic and predictable. I just can't explain it, but this guy doesn't seem to have a personality, he never has an opinion or something interesting to say. And it's very annoying.
Plus, this will be very difficult for him if he wants to become a household name or become a very big draw.
Cotto is the most drab personality I can remember in boxing in a long time. To be around the top 10 p4p and have no personality is just bizarre. But I guess if you don't talk a lot, people won't be out to get you as bad
I think he makes up for this in the fight lol. Hes abit dull outside the ring, doesnt crack that many smiles but he seems a nice genuine guy. Just goes to show the quite ones are the dangerous ones lol
What good is a garfield smile and plastic personality like Oscar De La Hoya...
Yea, Oscar's interview after losing to Tito was awkward,
I can maybe understand this one though since it was his first loss,
But I immediately think of his fake smile & interview
after his 2nd loss to Mosley.
Oscar: "no, no I'm not upset...why should I be"
THAT made me feel UNCOMFORTABLE. I guess that's just him.
:lol1::lol1:
I think as fans we can demand seeing certain fights, but when we demand a certain personality from these 'ring heroes', then we've crossed the line, you know?
He seems pretty mellow and shy most of the time. Not everybody is comfortable in front of the camera. He still seems to have a quiet confidence the way he carries himself though. Just dont watch his interviews....
And the recycled answers have a lot to do with his inability to speak fluent english, I'm sure.

Cottos interviews in English or Spanish? He's not very charasmatic, but in english he's not able to express himself at the best of his abilities.
he's just brutally straight forward and serious, which i can respect a lot in a world where it's now all about acquiring fame and stardom. he gets in the ring and gets the job done. Job.. done, that's what it is to him, his job, and he's talking to the accountants or HR guys. that's all it is to him, that's what i get out of it at least.
His english is not very good so therefore he is not able to express himself like he does in the spanish interviews.
Thats the main reason, but besides that he's just a serious cat, who lets his fists do the talkin----
its better that way. of course ppl like to hear the fighters opinions beefs etc. he is very professional. very mature and respectful way to approach the sport of boxing.
Miguel's an introvert.
It's natural for him to keep to himself and think to himself.
I'd rather have someone who's true to their personality, instead of someone who fakes being a loud mouth when he's not being real to himself.
How many ALI wanna-bes have we seen?
We don't need any more of those!
It's ANOTHER reason I like Miguel. He's never caved into the pressure of selling out his real personality.

Good comments.

didnt cotto used to stutter??? that my explain why he is camera shy and doesnt say much
As far as postfight interviews go I'd rather him speak Spanish.
When it's an English-speaking interviewer, and an English-speaking TV audience at home, the constant translating gets a bit old. Why aren't these young guys making any effort to learn or speak even some English?

He's managed to become a star without resortin to bein mouthy and disrespectful to people when he talks and I like him better for that. Dude lets his fists do the talkin, which more fighters should do more often.
A good personality helps to connect with the people, no doubt. But sometimes you either got it (a great personality) or you don't.
Looking on the bright side, maybe his bland personality is a blessing in disguise for him. You know people still quote things that Mayweather said two years ago as if they were said yesterday. (I'm just using him as an example.) Fans love to catch boxers contradicting themselves and using their words against them. At least Cotto doesn't say much, so the chances of having something come back and haunt him seem less likely.
I understand promoters are there to promote fights. But it seems like a lot of boxers need managers or something to help them gain exposure. Has Cotto done commercials for Ecko? Basically, there are creative ways to present athletes in a better light even if they're not great speakers. You just need a creative type on your team to help you out, IMO.
