Marco Antonio Barrera is a certified legend in the sport of boxing. Champion in three divisions (one of the handful of Mexican-born fighters to accomplish the task), with an outstanding record of 65 (43) - 6 (1), only be stopped in his first loss. A sure-fire Hall of Famer, and a Mexican legend. Having had battles with Kenedy McKinney, Agapito Sanchez, Manny Pacquiao (twice), Junior Jones (twice), Rocky Juarez (twice), Juan Manuel Marquez, Paulie Ayala, Kevin Kelley, Robbie Peden, Naseem Hamed, Johnny Tapia and three epic battles with Erik Morales.
However, in his last 5 outings, he's gone an underwhelming 3-2, losing to Marquez and Manny Pacquiao along the way. He didn't look close to his best against a virtual unknown in his last fight and is currently scheduled to fight hot British prospect Amir Khan.
The question I have is simple. Assuming he gets passed Khan, and does so with enough vigor to convince himself that he should continue, how well can this comeback for the aging superstar really go?
Who could he beat? Who could he face for that matter?
Could he be the first Mexican to hold title sin four different weight classes?
Could he get seriously hurt?
What would be a plan for him, if you handled his career?
Who would you go after, who would you stay away from?
How would you end it?
Basically, how well could it all go, overall.
Vote. Discuss.
Brilliant poll, this is really interesting and sheds much light on the subject of MAB's return to the limelight, let's look at these results and analyze them carefully, maybe construct a graph and we can gauge how well MAB is going to perform in the fight against Khan. :gives:
Other than the 30+ voters, that includes yourself? I guess no one.
I dont think Barrera has enough of everything to make a great comeback. First, he's not getting any younger and there are so many young, hungry and talented fighters out there vying for the crown. Second, hes been through a lot of epic battles and his body might have taken its toll already. And lastly, he's inactive lately with the exceptions of a couple cheap fights.
Just a thought. :boxing:
Its really hard to tell what that means.
At best, Id say he can KO Amir Khan, and win a vacant ABC belt against a lesser known contender.
Cant see him doing too much after that, though, he doesnt have that much gas left in the tank.

Thanks for taking the time to vote. :)
After that cut last Saturday I fear that it may have the same ending as DLH-JCC I. Khan is a sharp puncher and you can expect him to make the cut a target.
That cut does worry me, but I don't know how big the cut will factor in. I just don't get the feeling that it will.
And yes, I'd agree it's TOTALLY over if he loses a fair fight.
Yeah, it's actually one of the better crossroad fights I've been excited about in a very long time. Last time I actually cared about this kind of fight in a major way was Chavez/De La Hoya I.

Absolutely. I think Barrera is clearly on the downslide and isn't a good fit in the 135 lb division. Obviously Khan is a question mark coming off a recent blowout loss, but if he has anything going for him at all he should get past MAB in 2009.

So, would you say that if he blasts Khan out of there, he's totally eclipsed your idea of what he could be at this stage in his career?

Beating Khan and being able to accomplish that would actually be pretty successful for a late-career run.
yea, but thats only if he beats those guys, and even thats only if he plays his cards right too.
so I said 6.
It wouldnt be too hard for Barrera to get a weak title tho. I mean, I think Monske Fana won a Lightweight title, and Barrera made him look like a joke a few years back.
depends on whos champ at the time and everything though.
eh, he could snag himself a 4th weight class belt by beating up some really weak title holder if he wanted to. probebly that vacated WBA one if he wanted to, you know the WBA is going to have a weak champion.
which would be bs, but technically he could be the first Mexican to be a 4 weight class world champ.
thats about all hes going to be able to do though.

If he somehow manages to beat Khan, he should retire on the win
And Khan should retire on the loss, or at least accept he will only ever be domestic level
I think it's highly improbable that he beats Amir, and if he does manage to, it says more about Khan than it does him
That's what I gave him, and I thought I was being generous. I'm expecting Khan to slice him up real bad.
